As someone who cries at the drop of a hat when overwhelmed or frustrated, I have absolutely never thought less of you for crying on “Is It Cake?”. Caring so much about what you’re doing, being under pressure, and being exhausted is an absolute perfect storm for a little breakdown, and it was totally justified. I’d have cried too!
This makes me happy thank you
Cosigning this
I'm also so annoyed at the Try Guys for bringing it up and giving you so much shit about it. Johnny you did great. I cry all the time too. You're just in touch with your feelings! What's wrong with that?
I was gonna comment something similar, I’m 32 big years old and it’s not easy to be exhausted, under pressure etc. and then to “fail” at what you’re attempting, I would cry too! And the thing is, he was in front of people who were literally being paid to judge his every move. A mini breakdown in a situation like that is 1,000% valid!
It does make his maniacle cackle at the kid all the more sweet.
You really said "That's bullshit. Source: I'm a professional" and I'm literally obsessed
I’m actually loling
The fact that today is the day I learnt that Cake Boss is pure acting....
I actually..
A tragedy…
I used to love cake boss as a kid
Cake boss taught me as a kid, if this guy can make a killing selling play doh looking modeling chocolate figures, anyone can
Lmao same. I watched it as a kid and didn’t watch it again till now and I don’t know how I didn’t know how fake it was lol
@jpachu16 I'm so devastated rn. 😂😭
@pemanilnoobSame I loved Cake Boss when I was little so much that my grandma would save the episodes for me when I came over
Honestly Jonny you did great on the show -the fact that you care so much and put so much of yourself into your work is why your audience continues to expand!
That means a lot truly
the fact that you were wearing the same shirt as in the show makes it 100% better😂
I threw out that shirt after this stg
I genuinely scrolled through the comments mid-video to look for this. 😂
@thejonnycakesvalid response tbh
Half of cake boss is them making really intricate rice crispy treats covered in a layer of insanely thick fondant. It’s like sugar coated in more sugar with an accent of even more sugar.
Those cakes were always too big!! Hahaa
Don’t forget about the chocolate ganache!!!
While I loved Cake Boss back in the day, I always thought too much was going on in his designs. Like, sometimes less is more. Take off one or two things and it’d be fine
@klrl93 Very Coco Chanel of you.
@thejonnycakes Seems like that should be Cocoa Chanel… (I’m sorry, I had to)
I remember Ace of Cakes with Duff Goldman in 2006, predating Cake Boss. The show was just so chill and fun.
The superior baking show for sure.
Duff and Geof are sooo crushworthy.
@ghostgurlgamer so superior. I remember I loved Ace of Cakes, and all of a sudden people were like 'whoa look at the cake boss' and I was like no no. We have the real cake boss, his name is Duff Goldman.
THANK YOU! Justice for the OGs Duff and Geoff ❤️❤️❤️
Yeah, when Jonny argued for Cake Boss being the one to put cakes on my map, I automatically responded "okay Ace of Cakes would like a word"
He 100% should have served it. In another season of Great British Bake Off, a contestant accidentally took the wrong custard out of the fridge, and the guy who made that custard was stuck with hers which wasn't made properly. The judges didn't hold it against him, and they judge him based on the custard that was in the other contestant's dessert
So much of GBBO is judged on taste too, so if he served a pile of slop and it tasted good, especially if there was suspicion of sabotage, they probably would have kept him for another week.
As James Acaster said "we watch it to switch off and feel optimistic about cake and friendship", and the way Ian responded to the situation (blaming others and dramatically quitting) was sort of the antithesis of the show.
Chetna in the same episode had a melted Alaska and she served it! Also Ian should have used his own freezer instead of trying to use someone else’s, no surprise they wanted their freezer space for themselves.
@rewil42 he used hers because production told him to. some of the units stopped working and production told them they had to share she knew that and still took his out instead of moving stuff around to make space for hers and whether she meant it as sabotage or not it is considered sabotage because she did it for no reason and chose not to announce that she took it out.
@Elizabeth-jo3cbAnd notice that none of the production team cast blame on Diana - Sue went on record after that it was only out for the briefest of intervals. The weakest possible sabotage ever to quality for the word.
@rewil42 I have made desserts when it’s extremely hot out and I have made baked Alaska what happened to his dessert absolutely could not have happened in the briefest of intervals
I stood in line 8 hours to meet the Cake Boss at their opening in Dallas. I remember my dad forcing me to show him my cakes that weee inspired by his show. He actually earnestly offered me a job-if it had been closer to home, I may have taken it.
0:11 she is literally me everyday
No relatable never watch me on baking competitions.
Before my 8 year old went to cake decorating class, we watched a few episodes of Nailed It! so that he could see that failing is totally fine and having a good time is more important. He's 14, still bakes for family events, friends' birthdays and just to relax. And he's still got a signed photo of Nicole and Jacques on his wall.
jealous of your son right now because I want that photo 😭
Aw i LOVED that show and thats so thoughtful. My friend and i have considered auditioning for it even ha
I'll tell you what I tell my kids: please don't apologize for feeling emotions and displaying them, Jonny. You poured your heart into something, it didn't work out and getting emotional about it is a completely valid response.
Okay I’m inspired thank you!! I will cry proudly! ♥️
Crying is a natural and healthy response to high stress. It’s your body releasing energy that will hurt you if left to fester inside. Never be ashamed!! You put your heart and soul into it and that kinda passion is priceless!
This makes me smile. Wish I knew their last June when we filmed hehe
Crying is like sweating; it's a natural bodily function that's an important part of our health. It's the body shedding bad stuff through liquid.
Comfort channel achieved - lol I did not clock all this cake boss acting back then ah young silly me, love food scenes - of course, agree with everyone else, this should be a series!
Unless I’m just being a hater
I was thinking the same thing! I loved Cake Boss so much as a kid. I begged my mom to let me take the cake decorating class at our local Micheal’s when I was 11. I never once noticed all the staged scenes😂 I was just vibing
Ace of Cakes walked so that Cake Boss could run.
And so I could sit and eat.
I love that you went back and forth saying don’t put kids on reality tv and then also it being your favorite clip 😂
No im such a hypocrite
this should be a series
Well okay then!
Has to be! Dosen’t even have to be baking-things!! Just ”Jonny Cakes reacts” would be amazing in general!! I need to know what Jonny things about anything and everything from now on
@thejonnycakesoh hello sir
@thejonnycakes👆 just so you know!
Baking things, internetdrama, real life drama, realityshows I NEED TO KNOW WHAT YOU THINK ABOUT IT ALL FROM NOW ON!
I agree
"Julia Child was a real late bloomer, living a real ho-hum life"
Johnny, the woman was so tall when she was thirty that she couldn't enlist in the women's division of the military during WWII and had to "settle" for working abroad for the secret service. Her first recorded recipe was a shark repellent still in use by the US military today to keep sharks from accidentally exploding underwater ordinance. The reason she started cooking is because she married a secret agent and moved to France after the war, happily ever after style.
The cooking and baking thing is the sequel no one asked for or expected, in a completely different genre, but somehow with the same level of success.
lol omg I came here to say this. Ho-hum?!? gtfoh (love you mr. cakes)
Came to say the same. Julia Child was pretty fabulous. From my memory of the film, the reason Julia didn't like the blog was because Julie (understandably in my opinion) focused so much of it on how difficult the recipes were. Julia felt that undermined her entire life's work to make the recipes achievable- also completely understandable.
Major high five to this comment! Strongly recommend reading ‘My Life in France’ by Julia Child and Alex Prud’homme. Her life was richly storied and multifaceted, even without her culinary journey, she was out there blazing trails and making waves. All 6 foot 2 of her…
I also love the Bridesmaids scene where she punches the giant wedding cookie at the bridal shower.😂
“You really thought THESE women were gonna finish THAT cookie!?”
I would say that Duff's show about Charm City Cakes was the first cake decorating show. I can't remember what the show was called
ACE OF CAKES!
@thejonnycakesI was literally gonna yell it if you didn’t
13:50 I can’t believe your worst day still produced such a good cake like hfs!!!!
watching bingate live as a brit was such an experience everyone was talking about it the next day lmaooo
I wanna move to England and watch live
I love the movie Chef! Jon Favreau wanted to learn how to cook and move like a chef so that the character he played was realistic, so he actually had Roy Choi teach him, and he enjoyed it so much that he actually got really into food and cooking.
I need to try watching it again
The thing about tomato-gate is that when I watched the show, I did feel like it was cheating. But then the show rewarded Johnny for doing it, which indicated to me that it hadn’t actually been against any rules. If you were annoyed that Johnny put fake tomatoes on the real tacos, you should really blame the show not Johnny
This. It felt like cheating to me, too, but there were so many opportunities for the production crew to stop him, and they didn't. So it must have been allowed from the start, and Johnny was just the only person smart enough to try it.
Right? And even let's say he blatantly cheated--pretty sure death threats are not a healthy human response.
Yeah, I hated it, didn't like that Jonny did it because it WAS cheating. But what wasn't his fault is that *they* allowed it, like you said. Jonny even said he was doing it to trick the judges, and they had every chance to stop it if it wasnt allowed and didn't do so. It still rubbed me the wrong way though. Still love him and his channel, I just choose not to remember that episode 😂
Honestly my favorite part is when you shared your story cause it’s so valid to breakdown under pressure and stress and you still love what you’re so much. You’re an inspiration as well
Oh that means a LOT. Thank you.
Lemme know what you think of this video. The comment that makes me laugh the hardest wins.
Regarding tomatogate, they're just jelly. You only bake there, it's not your show. Innovation can't be counted as cake crimes or we wouldn't have any illusion cakes. You're not cheating, you're not revealing your tricks.
be honest… were your tears cake
@Jacquelynoberdorfgelatin.
Ngl the whole time growing up I thought Cake Boss was real... and only now did I learn it was all fake 😅 thanks Jonny
1. You're definitely creative.
2. You (maybe) cheated.
3. Death threats over creatively, maybe, cheating, on a cake show hosted by Mikey Day...Goes CRAZY.
BTW. Love you Johnny Cakes 🎂
Ilysm
Dude I just adore your energy and reacting to your own cake on Is It Cake? Is so relatable, cringing at yourself of your past mistakes LOL and if one of your cakes manages to make it to one of my stores I'll buy it immediately WE LOVE YOU JONNY!!!!!!
Hopefully some day soon!
I like this open and vulnerable version of Johnny! More of this please!
He’s gone now back to stupid silly
@thejonnycakes aww, shit 🤣
Dude 19:22, nailed it sets everyone up to FAIL. The buttercream NEVER stands a chance with those hot as hades cakes. They forever give no time for these poor contestants. Yet here i am still binging every ep.
Haha me too, I’ve watched all the seasons multiple times. The humor in that show never fails to make me laugh
lol because the results are meant to be failures, that's what makes it entertaining
i WAS wondering if it was the same shirt. thought i was tripping til you pointed it out 🤣
No I just am unoriginal
My feeling about Bingate is that I fully believe that Diana didn’t intentionally sabotage Iain (she was shown to be a bit flighty) but I think her whole ‘it was just 30 seconds’ thing doesn’t excuse it. I’ve had commercially made ice cream that has gone melty in that span of time when the temp is high enough and they always seem to make them do ice cream when it’s super hot and you just know that tent makes it hotter too. That said Iain let his temper get the best of him and if he’d just taken up the goopy mess and explained what happened, he may have stuck around.
What I don’t agree with are the people who thought threatening Diana was ok.
It's supposed to be incredibly warm in the tent as well, conditions might have been met for even well made ice cream to melt easily!
my thought is even if she doesn't think it was and didn't mean it that way it still came off as sabotage because production told them why they had to share units and that stuff had to be moved around to make it work and she chose not to listen and removed his dessert which unless someone asks for help you aren't allowed to touch another contestants dessert and instead of moving stuff around and putting it back in she left it out and then chose not to ask who's it was. the threats weren't ok but her lying about how long it was left out and not being remorseful wasn't ok either. he should have kept it and explained what happened though. In cases like this one whether it was intentional sabotage or not if you present it to the judges and explain what happened they typically will grade you on a different scale or eliminate the person who sabotaged you . Same with if someone purposefully or accidentally swapped one of your components. They’d grade you on the component you made not the one in your dish
Jonny you absolutely need to give Chef a second chance! It's such a great movie!
Ok will rewatch. People LOVE it
10:38 awww Jonny we love you and it’s okay to cry and u still did an amazing job
Yooooo, I remember watching bin-gate when it first aired and screaming 😂 Ian was my favourite contestant so I was mad when he just gave up
1:41 I think it will be fine since most of their cakes are rice crispy treats and pipes 😭
Johnny never stop being you ❤️ I’ve never felt so at home listening to someone xx
That’s so sweet. I’m mommy.
@thejonnycakes This is the first I've ever seen you/your channel and these hilarious replies are what got me to sub lol. Btw you look great in the bad luck shirt, love the color!
Since you can see them pushing a dowel in the "new" cake at 3:12, a part of me wnats to believe they googled "how to not make tiered cakes fall" and found out about dowels after dropping the first one
Mama they knew about dowels the whole time!!
@thejonnycakes But it would be REALLY funny if they didn't
16:49 Love everything you do, just had to take the opportunity to say Julia Child served as a spy for the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) during World War II. The OSS was a precursor to the CIA. She worked in various roles, including as a research assistant and in the Emergency Sea Rescue Equipment Section, where she helped develop shark repellent. While not the "James Bond" type of spy, she played a role in intelligence gathering and operational support.
Was looking for this comment. Not really sitting around with a ho-hum life.
Yes! That comment killed me. So not the case that she had a ho hum life.
Always love watching Jonny! You bring so much joy into our lives, thank you for all you do. Don't beat yourself up too much for crying on TV, most of us would have done the exact same thing in your shoes
Oh on't worry. I've milked that moment for all it's worth.
Johnny, if I were in your shoes in that ice skate cake clip, I wouldn't have handled it as well. The fact you got something good after that even if it didn't fool the judges is great. Remember someone's worst piece can be an improvement for someone else
As the clock struck 2:03, a sudden realization dawned on me about the structural integrity of the cake. The absence of supporting rods meant the delicate layers could potentially collapse, compromising the entire dessert's stability and presentation. This critical oversight could lead to a potential baking disaster, potentially ruining the carefully crafted culinary creation.
I cry so easily! I can’t help it- I could be in public, with loved ones, or with total strangers. Stress is stress and emotions are real.
Love you so much Jonny!!! ❤
Please make this a series! I need to binge watch this
Oh damn okay I will!
Big Night is one of those movies I could rewatch a million times and never get tired of it.
Jonny Cakes and James Acaster should do a thing together where they make something and talk about how their baking reality show days both were god awful days for them.
That would be absolute chaos, I would love to see him react to the James Acaster meltdown if this becomes a series though, because it’s classic
Acaster’s meltdown is a thing of beauty. I know it was a terrible day for him, but I hope the comedian in him appreciates how great it was comedically.
And we know James loves desserts!
I'm never here this early and I'm so excited for the noises Jonny makes when he sees a disaster. I know it's from a good place of empathy, which makes it fun. Thank you for brightening my Wednesday!
Thanks for being here!
I cry when I'm frustrated, much more easily than from any other emotion. Is It Cake, All-stars is what made me love you. It was so, so relatable!
I would give Chef another view. You kind of have to be in the right mood for it. It's a good rainy day movie, as it's very much just like a slice of life kind of plot about finding one's self. I don't know how far in you walked out, but for most chefs and pro cooks I've known, it really resonates with that passion for making food and feeding people. Also, yes, Jon Favreau (sp?) had Roy Choy as an on set consultant for the film and personally trained on knife skills and other basics. Jon had such a good time working with Roy that they start a cooking show series on Netflix loosely inspired by the film, called The Chef Show. It was a great series
I’m so glad behind the scenes let Johnny know Favreau did the hard work to get those skills. I watched an interview with Choi when the movie came out and he said he treated Favreau like any other intern, made him redo errors until it was as perfect as possible.
I love the fact that you enjoy the cake after you make them
Hey Jonny, just wanted to thank you for encouraging us to pursue new dreams even as we get older... I'm 36 and have been at a low point, not working for the past couple of years after having a kid, being depressed, gaining weight and starting from scratch... Went from a bank executive with burnout to just now getting my first cake commission, writing erotica, and teaching art to preschoolers. Thanks for reminding me that I haven't even started crushing the things I care about yet. ❤
Ok, you are amazing!!!
@thejonnycakes OMG thank you 😭 means a lot coming from you, king!!
Jonny, I am obsessed with you ever since Is it Cake?. You've never done anything wrong in my mind. You're hilarious and make amazing cakes. I adore you. Please know that people forget to say nice things, they're always fast to throw shade. Screw them. You shine bright!!
Holy carp! I went to high school with Abby, great to see she’s doing so well!
TWO jonny videos in one week?!? Life is BLESSED 🙌🏼
And another on Monday! We are doing a fully loaded Pride Month.
@thejonnycakes 💃🏻🎉
One of the things I love about 'Chef' so much is that he learned how to make all of the components in every part of the movie, because as a director, he wanted to be able to have it be his own hands in every shot. He wanted the continuity and authenticity of him doing the work. And then all the work he did with Roy Choi to learn how to cook in preparation for the film actually sparked 'The Chef Show' series where they had guest chefs on that he was inspired by or learned from in prep for the movie so that he could showcase all their amazing skills.
This should be a series it’s so fun!
I used to watch Cake Boss as a teen. It wasn't until last year when I thought to rewatch, that I realized it was def not reality lol Thanks for confirming @JonnyCakes! it was more fun / entertaining as a teen. But now I watch Chopped and that shit gets me lol
Someone commented on this video that the cake they made in that episode was for her sister! And the drop was fake!
The tomato trick was very clever and tbh I think it's valid to do for the sake of good TV drama, lol.
Glad you came back up and found what you truly love to do!
Chef was such a good movie! Walking out is criminal.
That episode of Nailed It had the best challenge too with the lookalike cookies 😂
Ace of Cakes started 3 years before Cake Boss so I would say they started the crazy cake phenomenon.
I watched you do the tomato thing live. I thought; "this man is a genius!". If you weren't penalized on the show right then and there then obviously it was a fair move. Love what you do, the energy you bring and glad you made the career change that you did! ❤❤❤❤❤
Same! I thought "Oh that's so smart." People need to learn how to use critical thinking skills. The same episode Sam was saying "I should have put sesame seeds on all of them."
I love Rinse!! Used them for years before moving out of their zones. Can wholeheartedly endorse trying them to anyone watching.
I remember thinking that the jello tomatoes on the real tacos was genius, if it was “cheating” they should have told you 🙃
I grew up and went to school with Taylor so I was absolutely shocked seeing her kid nation days pop up here 😂
Love that you have a bad luck shirt and actively continue to wear it 😂 You’re adorable, I was crying right along with you
You know what? I've never seen "Is It Cake?". I have only known Jonny from the ol' Try Guys Without A Recipe whenever Ned was still around. lol
Love to hear your food commentary ❤
Johnny you mentioning Kid Nation gave me whip lash! I was literally just telling a friend about it. I'm also one of the only one who remembers it from my high school years except I was watching from rural Ontario, Canada.
Honestly it was better than Survivor some episodes between the gold stars, the slaughtering of the chicken, and the general Lord of the flies vibe going on, it was such a good show. The teenagers who stepped up to take care of everyone and the little kids who should have never been put in that situation. The things we allowed on tv in the early 2000s will never cease to amaze.
Feeling your feelings and having safe ways to respond to them are so important. As an easy crier, I am with you and your responses are so valid.
Johnny, I just wanted to hug you when you were crying! You are so talented and I hope you know that! I would have totally cried too. I cry very easily in situations when I’m overwhelmed, tired, frustrated. Let those tears out!
i was watching this at like 3am while i couldn't sleep and the julia part about just combining some simple ingredients you can have a beautiful cake hit with me and i was like "yknow what, you're so right lets do it", and baked my mom a birthday cake lol it turned out to be one of the best cakes ive made too! (i used alton browns "a far far better cake" recipe with the cocoa whipped cream for on top and it was delicious!)
I’m gonna cry again. Love this so much
@thejonnycakes as sophie would say its okay to cry
I need this to be a series and for you to react to food scenes in animation!!! Ratatouille, turning red, etc!!
Yes! And so many Miyazaki movies!
needed a video to de-stress so when i saw you uploaded, i was over the moon
I did not expect a Good Burger reference in this video 😂
Kid Nation was a fever dream and I watched every episode 😂
His reactions are SO relatable and real!!!!😂🎉😊
18:46 lol so funny because you’re video was right above a Kid Nation documentary on my video recommendations
The fact you’re wearing the same shirt in this video as in the is it cake clip 😭🤣
Johnny i just wanna give you a hug. Watching you watch yourself on is it cake reminds me of watching back old theatre rehearsals and i RELATE
You're so fun to watch Jonny Cakes!!!
Thank you Karen!
Jonny, watching your channel whenever I am not feeling great is one of the things I enjoy doing. It speaks a lot when despite all the struggles and everything you went through, that you found something (and someone!) that makes you feel very happy and fulfilled. Thank you for sharing this joy with us.
This is the sweetest comment. I so appreciate you being here.
The joy your videos bring me - outfit is incredible too as always 🎉😊
Seeing this video reminds me of that food network show cupcake wars 😅
13:26 your wearing the same shirt 😂 was that planned?
14:24 omg
Thank you so much for this upload bc i watched it on lunch at work and now i can watch it again for real at home 🙂↕️
Don't care that you cried on a food show.
You are not the first person to cry on a food show.
Rejoice in that. 😂😂
But I’m an ugly crier
@thejonnycakes Not really.
But isn't everyone... Technically?
I don't think you have anything to worry about. 😂
i remember watching kid nation as a kid and ive thought about that show for so long and couldnt remember the name so thank you.
Omg I was unbelievably exited when I saw Nailed It I was hoping this whole video that it would be here
You're a phenomenal baker, artist, entertainer!❤❤❤
a series of someone recreating cake boss cakes would go so hard ngl
Now I remember you! I remember watching that first episode of Is It Cake? and hating you for that tomato thing 🤣
Then 5 mins later realized it doesn't matter, all of those cakes were amazing! I feel like all cooking and baking shows are so stressful, so if y'all even just put out something out for the judges that's like 5 stars for me 👏🏽
The egg scene at the end of Big Night is perfection!
Honestly Jonny I found you through watching your first season on is it cake and I never thought you cheated, you were just being smart, work smarter not harder as they say. Also crying because you’re overwhelmed and tired or just simply because something didn’t turn out as you wanted is valid and people do that often, me included so don’t feel bad. You’re an awesome baker and I love your baking and non-baking content!!!! 🥰happy pride month too!
14:15 i love to hear that about mikey day!!!! i find him to be the light of snl and just such a fantastic comic, its awesome to hear he’s a good guy too!!!! thanks for sharing jonny!!!
I genuinely couldn't tell which one was your cake from afar. You did great ❤
Love how Johnny is wearing the same shirt as he did during his Is It Cake clip lol
I was obsessed with Kid Nation! Thank you for bringing awareness to this gem of a show.
Johnny wearing the same purple shirt as he did on the Is It Cake? clip 😂😂
