It's much much easier to remain consistent in distance/endurance running than almost any other Olympic track event. The reason sprinters and other explosive based event athletes can't stay on top for long is because they require more muscle mass which is extremely difficult to maintain especially as you get older and the more you have the more beat up and damaged they get and their ligaments and tendons have a much higher risk of injury too. Distance runners don't have that problem and can continue to operate at near peak proficiency for as long as they want as long as they keep training.

I’m interested to see how his body holds up when he retires. Some engines actually have less issues when run hard consistently, but fall apart when you stop pushing them. I wonder if his body will be the same way. I hope not, but something to follow up with.

Yeh his hips and knees will cause him some grief later in life but it’s probably worth it for riches and fame. Normal people overtraining for a hobby on the other hand makes no sense.

He’ll likely be fine for a very long time. I mean he loves running. He’s gonna retire from competing eventually no doubt, but he’s more than likely going to continue running after until the day he physically cannot like a lot of other normal people do

Yeah look, I'd bet gold against copper that Kipchoge won't stop running when he retires from competition. I suspect he'll still maintain a training schedule that would destroy most athletes, and that he'll remain heavily involved in training the next few generations of Kenyan distance runners.

I'm proud of my country man.

I know this channel is limited to track and field, but if we widen the conversation to include other sports Kelly Slater, the pro surfer, is doing pretty well. He won his first World Title in 1992 at the age of 20, and his last in 2011, at 39.

I think ek’s longevity lies in two healthy running rules: land on forefoot area, keep cadence around 180. He never broke these two as far as i know. Some say he lands on midfoot area but this is not true. I think Bekele does not follow the rules and he may switch between forefoot and midfoot race by race. When he made 2nd wb he was a definitely forefoot lander.

I would pick Daley Thompson as the GOAT . World's best and unbeaten in the decathlon for over a decade . He was so dominant that he rarely had to even put any effort into the final event -1500 metres. While at the same time -multiple World champion ,multiple Olympic champion ,World record holder ,Olympic record holder.
