    When I was a youngster, I used to ride along with my father in his 1952 Chevy 2ton truck hauling corn silage. I loved to watch as a 2 row chopper loaded the truck and we hauled it to the dairies around Glendale, Arizona. The bunks out here are dug below ground and we would just drive in one end and out the other. The box sides would swing out when opened and unload the silage as you drove through. Sometimes if the silage didn't come out evenly or you hit a soft spot, the truck might fall over. This added to the excitement of riding along. Watching Andy chop corn or alfalfa brings back all those smells and memories which I'll always have. I'm 71 years old now and I remember it like yesterday, Thanks Andy!

    I'll say the same thing that I always say there's not much that you could videotape that I would find boring. Even when you were putting the repaired plate in the chopper, you had a little bit of double clip when you brought it on the lawn and I watched it a second time and enjoyed it haha. Last video where you had the camera mounted in the chopper cab was a pretty cool angle from behind you.
    I bet you would love having a press brake, with the fabrication skills you have even a small one would bring what you could do in your shop to another level. The problem is they take up a lot of space and when something happens to them they are a nightmare to work on.. which Im finding out from experience last week lol..
    Awesome video take it easy Andy. Enjoy your Sunday

    Whenever I have a panel wear through like that I look at the thickness and wonder why the OEM doesn’t put more material in there. These machines can’t last forever but they should be tougher in critical areas

    • @prjndigo
      @prjndigo Год назад +2

      its a known wear material and you can only harden the entirety of thinner things cheaply. Could you imagine having to pay $1800.00 for that panel? If it gets too thick you can end up with enough contour in it that it will catch and cause flow problems and it is _absolutely_ a blow-out panel to keep more expensive things from breaking. The amount of inertia that impeller unit below develops will throw a piece of pipe the length of a football field and punch a hole in a car door.

    Operators are not mechanics but they are way ahead of drivers is my experience, Andy seems to have a good few operators on his team but they still require supervision, so I suspect that the few minutes he was giving them instructions is what he does most of the time when he’s in the shop. He needs to be on top of his game every single minute as he has an enormous job to do keeping the feed up to the number of stock these guys have and keeping the slurry away from them all is not an easy thing to do, especially when you have to travel all over the place to different farms. I would love to know how many people are employed in this operation, I suspect between full and part time it has to be close to 50 . Which by the standards of the industry would be very few here in Ireland we tend to have 1 labour unit per 100 head but the rest of the world seems to have about 1 labour unit for c.30 head, however as we see Andy seems to be responsible for what 3 people would be employed to do on most dairy farms of this scale and if the rest of the family work like him they would have a lot of people working to replace them. I was in North America regularly enough in the 90’s and 00’s and for the most part they would have been employing far more people on a bigger dairy operation than would have been the norm in Europe, maybe somewhat less in Canada but somewhat more in Mexico so it balanced out at about 1 per 50 or so for the most part, especially where they were milking 20 plus hours a day in Europe we tend to milk c.3 hours a day and many would be considerably less, so the average worker would be much more utilitarian than specific to a single task. In saying this you would not find any operation of the scale that these guys run in Europe for the most part anything more than 500 head would be considered very large and anything over 1000 head would be extremely large and very rare.

    That flow panel, slit it and lap a piece of steel bent to fit from the outside through the slit to the inside and weld it both edges. Like shingles to let the grass "run off" as it goes up the chute. Pretty common problem with that design. Best solution is to just buy some steel plate, drill holes in it then park a loaded truck on it on sand to get the bend into it and use that instead of the idiot wear part.
