1999 was such a unique season on the short ovals. They made them use the tiny superspeedway wings to slow them down. Definitely slowed them down in the corners, made the drivers really have to DRIVE the cars, they could also follow other cars more closely since they weren't as aero dependent and the acceleration down the straights with the low drag was nuts.
900 hp, low downforce and an amazingly talented field of drivers. This season was peak CART.

@dzelpwr I wish we could see something like this happen with IndyCar in the next few years. The current car is as close to 90s CART machine as we've come in 20 years, and the field has the talent to match. Just need a few ovals (probably short ones given the trend) and a much better marketing effort

I totally agree with you! Otherwise, at Texas in 2001, the should have used the short oval configuration to slow down and promote a safer race, in order to do not cancel the event. Just an opinion, it might be wrong for some other issue that I don't know 😬

This is with the exception of Rio, where they ran the short oval aero. I imagine that if CART/IndyCar had ever run at Monza/Old Hockenheimring/90s Fuji/Circuit de la Sarthe they would run a modified short oval package with symmetrical suspension and (likely) taller gearing.

On that day the Motorsports, for me died. Will never forget this Oct.31st,1999. Was a night i couldn't find any rest to sleep. One day before my son got his 1st birthday......speechless. A few days later we visit the Stars&Cars from Mercedes in Stuttgart......we been very disappointed, because there was no word for him, only a lil picture inside a hall......

For somebody who wasn't afraid to run up front at over 230 MPH in the US 500 (albeit in a fuel mileage race), Mad Max sure was afraid to take the start from the pole at a much slower, one mile oval like Chicago Motor Speedway.

Imagine it was due to the brand new surface and very narrow racing line?

I know it is kind of off topic but does anybody know of a good place to watch newly released tv shows online?
