Great! Today I spent seven hours trying to do this. I made it to 9.30 in the video, then the alternator is still stuck to the block. I can move it slightly but don't take it away.
After looking at yur video I know I've done all things right! Filled with hope again :) Tomorrow is a new day!
    Thank you for the post!

Ove Wall There are 4 bolts at the bottom of the alternator (the lower ones hold the A/C tight to the alternator). If you missed those two, the alternator will only move a bit.

Randy Hughes yes I missed the lower two. Next time I don't. ;-)

Thanks a ton for this…mine quit yesterday (2001 V70 Turbo Wagon, 162k miles) and this made the job much more straightforward. If you ever find yourself in Boston, pints are on me!
(My tensioner also had a 12mm bolt head, rather than a T55).
    Happy New Year.

They use a ton more torx head bolts in europe than here. They are significantly better fasteners but are also more expensive. one reson why euro spec cars are better than our imports.

Thank you very much for taking the time to make this video. Just put a new alternator in my wife's 2001 Volvo V70 XC and your video guided me through the task flawlessly.
    Saved us about $300!
    Thanks again.

Thanks for the vid. I have just completed this on a V70 D5. I was able to leave the coolant hose connected and not remove the PAS pump. Removing the PAS high pressure hose (only a small dribble of fluid) and bracket gave enough room to slide the alternator out. Took just over an hour.

This procedure works on the 2001 s60's as well, I just replaced mine at 146k.
Thanks a lot for taking the time to make this video, I got the old one out and the new one in with ease, and in just under an hour and a half.

i just want to say thank you so much for this video. here i was thinking it was going to be such an awful job, but this tutorial made it a snap. my car is a bit different from your model, but the same hardware is there. my biggest issue was getting the unit out, but turns out i didnt even need to remove the radiator hose at all.
    thank you again,

It was a little struggle because it all is a tight work space, I couldn't imagine how you managed holding a camera. great video.

Just wanted to thank you for your video. The only difference on mine was the the tensioner did not have place for a t-55 fitting so I placed a 12mm closed end wrench of the tensioner nut and pulled it clockwise to loosen the belt. I also drained a lot of the coolant to make it cleaner.

Good video, thanks. Just had to do mine. Same car 2001 rhd V70 2.4 petrol non turbo. My alternator came out without being turned around with comfortable clearance, I only disconnected the top radiator hose at the radiator end. The only hassle being having to use a short 14mm ring spanner on the tensioner bolt because I did not have a socket and ratchet that I could get on to that bolt because of the lack of room. If I ever have to do this again I'll make sure I've got something that gives better leverage on that tensioner bolt.

    If only.
    Trying to remove mine.
Top bolt was previously broken off.
2 lower bolts found damaged from previous attempt.
I will just have to do the regulator from underneath or anywhere I can reach.
It's possible to reach from the other side of the manifold with a very long screwdriver. I will try that if my stubby screwdriver can't get it.
    Such fun.

take away the manifold is better when shifting the regulator , salt and water goes into the regulator and breaks the leads

The only other thing I would add is to replace the tensioner and belt just because with everything apart it is easy to do now instead of when they fail. Also I found it was easier to put hose clamp back on hose before putting power steering pump in place(more room). Thanks again for your detailed proper video.

Looks pretty much the same as my 2000 C70 T5, which is a P1 car, I'm definately going to use this video as a reference for when I eventually change my apparently dead alternator! For now my car is VOR, thankfully I have a few other cars I can use! My car has only done 88,000, I don't get why it's packed up, it should be capable of double as most seem to be!

I've done my Alternator now, many thanks for posting up this video, it certainly gave me a few pointers, and in fact now that I've done the job, I'd say it's ESSENTIAL to move the PAS pump and the radiator top hose, because it would make the job very very difficult if not impossible to do, so well done! My car is a P1 and the procedure is pretty much the same, except mine has a bolt on the serpentine tensioner and not a torx, also there was no need for me to remove the boost pipe, I got a genuine Bosch refurbished alternator for my car, the jobs a good 'un! I found the serpentine belt to be a swine to remove and to put on, you have to rotate the engine on the crank pulley bolt in order to put it back on, it won't go any other way!

Thanks for this! One thing to add... I think it's easier to nudge the radiator forward a bit to get the clearance to get the alternator out of there. It was soooooooooooooooooooooo close. Not like my 1965 Mustang...

Nice work! That looked like the original alternator, if so 150k out of it ain't too shabby! I've got 139k on my original right now. Not looking forward to replacing it but at least I know now it can be done with a bit of work and patience.
