small correction to the video boost section: -you *can* in fact record without HDR enabled, but still only in 30/60fps through the main lens or tele (no ultra wide) -And apparently I didn't wait long enough for my boosted video to come back at 3:25... which is strange because I shot these clips well before I transferred them off device. But Google tells me that while the videos on the left are RAW and unedited, the videos on the right are not fully processed. Which, to me, speaks to how relying on footage to be processed off device should not be the answer to improving video quality on device, especially if someone who is versed in tech is misunderstanding the process.
Now that you're doing your own content separate of the Verge- when you review devices, do you need any permission or can you just pick up a device and make a video about it?
@ 4:45, I agree that software has improved, but the panorama isn't a direct replacement to what they currently have compared to the 8 Pro. Fully 360° panoramas on the new panorama mode do not actually render the full circle. The starting and ending position photos are omitted, which renders the full 360° panorama kinda useless. I also don't like how they removed the metadata which allowed users to view panoramas as a photosphere in Google Photos too.
Other tech reviewers....take note !! THIS is what we consumers want as a review period !!! No frills, no thrills, just honest to goodness practical advice !! Loving this ❤🎉. Such a breathe of fresh air.
I think this kind of review mostly targets the hardcore tech and photography crowd which is chronically online on YT and spends hours comparing phones. Nothing wrong with that, I love Becca's videos, but I believe it would overwhelm the average smartphone user, who's better off with MKBHD or iJustine
Wow, Ray, with all the videos and "stuff" you have been up to lately, I'm glad my favorite fitness gadget guy has time for my favorite photo gadget creator and her (sorta) new channel.😊
I fell out of the habit of watching Verge videos since it went from a "I'm really enjoying every video they put out" to a "I just watch Becca and Dieter videos" to a "I just watch Becca videos". Wow am I excited to see what you're able to produce on your journey as an independent creator.
My exact thoughts!! Missed Dieter doing reviews and when I watched Becca it was a breathe of fresh air.. great to see you venturing into your own contents ❤
I thought I was watching a Verge video and then it hit me... you were the one that made the Verge feel like the Verge. So glad to have you back on RUclips!
THIS! Stop the nonsense, childish beef about iPhone vs Android phones. This is a fair review, focused on the technical side, with clear examples of strengths and weaknesses. This is what we are looking for. Thank you, Becca.
iPhone is better. Stop it. Why do android phones copy iPhones. I know andriod phones are packed with the newest and fastest hardware but Apple's software and hardware integration is unmatched. Why do they follow Apple with the stupid camera bump? Why not make the back flat, make the phone bigger with a bigger battery?
Love this type of review. Actual real use and thoughts. I prefer this over someone sitting behind a desk, showing a top down image, listing specs. Your reviews feel so natural!
I have a Pixel 8 Pro, and I totally agree with you about the "issues" with the pictures and videos on these Pixel devices. But I think we, as tech and geek guys, tend to overthink every little detail, and a regular user probably won’t even notice. By the way, I’m a huge fan of Becca’s content creation journey as a solo creator. Keep shining, sweetheart!
Glad to find you and to see that you're still producing content, Becca - keep at it! The little stuff like weird exposure changes while shooting video is the kind of thing that would drive me up a wall, too, it's worth mentioning and hopefully that discussion will lead to better smartphone video quality down the line.
Finally someone calling it out! I love the review, personally, I wish we could just somehow DISABLE ANY, if not ALL the computational photography, or release a seperate PRO app that allows users to just turn these things OFF.
Hey Becca, I am an old follower of yours from your Verge days. I sort of started disliking the verge, when Vlad left. The alarm went off when Dieter left. I held on to you, Vjeran and Chris's work. Now that you've left, only Vjeran's work on Verge is what I might want to watch on Verge, if at all I go to their site/channel. On a greater note, I'm here to support you. Would love to see more work on the photography/tech side of things from you. Here's to your new journey. Lots of love and light. Tanumay.
Ammmazing vid, love the added personality and the more than superficial take on the camera… others just reviewing by numbers. Lovely to meet your partner. Love ya bud xx
I think we could use more extensive coverage of the wide/tele cameras. Yeah, sure, I happen to know what a 12mm and 120mm are useful for, but average folk might get some inspiration from a photographer really putting that 5x to good use.
I want to find out if the portrait mood has gotten any better. I honestly think it’s one of the worst ones out there. Samsung has been leading in that area for a long time.
THANK YOU. The biggest thing I hate about computational photography is the artificial brightening of the shadows to make everything look lit up. That is UNREALISTIC ASF. Shadows should be dark, bright areas should be bright. Simple as. Highly appreciate you pointing this out on the video.
Oh, yeah. That's the good ol "Pixel Putty" look. It drives me nuts! So great to meet you in person and so glad to see your first video post "I'm leaving." Incredible work as always!
Becca, you are SO dope. Your videos are in a league of their own. I’m not sure I’d ever buy a pixel; if I’m going android it’s 100% a samsung or nothing. This video solidified that decision BIG time. I owned a pixel 2XL and a pixel 3, and those were the last good pixel cameras.
7:26 As a Pixel user since Pixel 3, you just summarise the most annoying thing about Google Phones for me right now: that they still haven't fixed it, which is making me consider a switch to Apple.
you seem to be confused, friend. this phone definitely has squared-off edges relative to its predecessors and many other phones on the market. are you thinking of the *corners* of the phone's front and back, maybe? because those are definitely rounder than last year's model.
Really love the relaxed vibe of your videos. They're crammed with detail and insight but presented in such a warm and welcoming way. Already subbed and looking forward to more of your unique and personality filled creativity!
DUDE. Flipping love this. A few highlights… 1) Thank you for the button clicking. Genuinely helps give a sense of the quality hardware upgrade. 2) Thank you for focusing so much on video!! All the photography stuff is fantastic, but video is so sticking important both in the world now and also my job. Also… Would love a more explicit test of the video audio capture! I’ve noticed recently just how good the iPhone pros audio is in video in tough situations. Would love more night sight testing. I always felt like the pixels scored higher than the iPhone in low light, but that Google‘s processing of night photos usually felt over exposed and less… night-ish. Lastly, I’d be curious to see if there’s much of a difference between the 9 Pro and the Fold camera system!
Loved this! The effort that went into this was spot on; direct, focused discussion of your experience with the device, with really clear comparisons (love the dive into the face-focused masks clearly being applied), and a soothing low-fi vibe to keep the viewer engaged. Excited to see where you take this channel, but as a first post-The-Verge video, you nailed it 💯
This review is so much better and has much more useful info than any tech reviewers side-by-side-useless-zoom-in-pixel-peeping comparison. Thank you and keep up the amazing work! subbed.
Congratulations for this review! I barely watch The Verge videos (preferred reading) but I always watched yours: this personal take is even better, you show the authenticity that is unfortunately so hard to get these days and you give your videos a very human approach. Keep it going!
All Power to you!! The very positive response to this video is the evidence that u shud stick by ur instincts n ull grow stronger n stronger..u r free to do wat u luvv..u go!

What an awesome review. Thanks Becca! (I am a new subscriber who had subscribed to The Verge because of you. And now we’ve got a dedicated Becca channel. So glad you are taking this leap - and I’m looking forward to more of your videos! 😊
I always get excited when I see you post a new video, your videos are always amazing. Thank you so much for prefacing the issues w/ bad actors on the possibilities of the AI camera features. A.I. in everything is slowly creeping in everything and I appreciate the call out. Keep up the stellar work
Becca you are excellent photographer. Genuinely surprised by the brilliant still photography you have shared. Kudos 👏 Always a treat to watch your reviews. Best of luck with this new journey!
Great Review Becca, your delivery on camera seems so natural and refreshing. Although an ethics declaration at the end would be nice about the device. Cheers!
First time ever seeing you on RUclips. Top-notch review, great photography and great narration. It would be great to make throwback reviews, maybe looking and comparing cameras of some relatively old smartphones. (if you haven't already). Cheers.

Or you could use it normally and hope you don't run into this issue.
Great review and it's not 30 min long! Love it!
I don't know how to describe this, but watching Becca's photography review is just therapeutic. The shots, the edits, the voice. It's calming.
Absolute heat right out of the gate 🔥

you don't have a tick?? :
Please tell Marques to partner up in an upcoming video, or maybe the both of you nerding out on cameras
He's awesome!
Wow just coming with absolute heat for the first review video 👏🏻

Wow, so good. So much work behind all those comparison shots - and it's just endless (awesome) nailed comparison. Well done!

Becca made the video? I’m watching the whole thing; every time. Anyone else… I’ll watch the first 30 seconds, 9 times out of 10 I stop after that.
The Verge is totally lost and a shadow of its former self.
@@LukeVesty ),: I sadly agree wholeheartedly

Great job Becca!
ok ok so we know we have the iphone 16 coming. what's going to be the most important thing for me to test?
AI
Please test the dynamic range in photos, especially regarding the shadows. I find that my 15 Pro Max tends to crush the shadows quite a bit.
