Original Van Halen hits will always be the best.....They just had a rawer edge to them......Unlike the Sammy Hagar bubblegum era that was like listening to The Partridge Family.
I agree with earlier Van Halen having a rawer edge to them but that is typical of most young bands when they are "young and hungry". I know this is an "Alabama vs Auburn", "Michigan vs Ohio State" hot button issue for most VH fans BUT I loved both eras and have the entire catalog, with exception of VH3, which was underwhelming imo. In terms of the music changing between Van Halen and Van Hagar, keep in mind that Eddie wrote most of the music while Dave and Sammy wrote the lyrics. The musical transition was clearly underway while Dave was still in the band in 1984 with Jump. Supposedly, the transition to a keyboard sound, which dominated the 80s, is one of the reasons Dave left VH. So, the so called "bubblegum" era should be more attributed to Eddie than Sammy. In terms of edgy, Humans Being is about as edgy as it gets imo. Even Rush, who were even edgier than VH in the 70s imo with albums like 2112 and Hemispheres, went to keyboard Rock in 1982 with subdivisions.
