  • The history of Jose de San Martin and Latin American independence in Argentina (Rio de la Plata), Peru, Chile, and Upper Peru (Bolivia) during the late 1700s and early 1800s. He wasn't as flashy in defeating the Spanish Empire as his northern counterpart Simon Bolivar, but he was the hero they deserved.

San Martin was not ‘dispatched’ to the Uruguayan border, neither ‘to take care’ of the Royalist stronghold.
The ‘royalist stronghold’ was the city of Montevideo, in what is now Uruguay, which was under land siege by the independentist forces of General Artigas.
The Royalists forces were sending raiding parties seizing supples from population centers along the Paraná River, deep into enemy territory.
San Martin was sent to fight against, and to stop, these royalists raiding parties.
The Battle of San Lorenzo happened over 200 miles away from the Uruguayan border, almost 400 miles from Montevideo, the Spanish royalists troops failed in the attempted raid, and retreated by the river they came from. So yes it was the first argentine military victory in Argentine soil.

I appreciate your attention to this under-treated subject. (You could work on your pronunciation of certain words such as Bolívar--pretty important.) Thank you for your efforts.

As an Argentine I completly agree, our country has everything to be a rich one, but almost half of the population is poor because of selfish populist politicians and political inestability, having the figure of a constitutional monarch could have reduced the dissasters our regular politicians did to our economy, being completly free to destroy the future to "buy" an election.
