Still waiting for the weather to cool down here in Michigan, we're still about 10-12 degrees above average. So hoping that I'll make it out this year with the hot tent. With a new job and no vacation time till next March. We will get about 12 days off between Christmas and New Year's. That's when I'm planning my big escape. I'm hoping maybe this Fall to get away for a weekend or more? where I don't have to drive 150 miles to get to somewhere nice.

    Lonewolf 902 man I need your advice here. I'm about to order a pomoly stove. I want something that I could back pack for 2 to 3 weeks with in late fall and use in my hot tent along the way. I'm thinking I dont actually want glass windows on the sides, as I like to sleep in darkness.
    Small front window is ok though. I'm looking at the Ultralight coming in at 4.8 lbs is awesome. But that T1 looks like it's nice and only 3 lbs more weight. Do you feel the T1 is worth the extra weight or not?

    Leaving the axe at home just makes sense. Small stove- small wood. Using an axe in close quarters presents a significant hazard. A bush craft rule is not to split wood kneeling with an implement that is longer than your forearm. And splitting many small peices would increase those chances. One would want an axe that, while standing, will hit the ground before the head hits your leg when you miss. Bring the axe for a different situation in deep winter conditions, that warrant processing of large timbers for a larger stove to negate Arctic conditions.

  • @bwillan
    @bwillan 3 года назад +1

    The argument for the axe is when you have a large volume of firewood to process. Ie when winter camping. It allows you to finish that camp chore quickly so you have more of the available daylight to do other activities. Ultimately is is a matter of preference. My knife can certainly handle batoning wood. I would rather save that edge for other finer cutting tasks and use an axe for splitting firewood.

    • @Lonewolfwildcamping
      @Lonewolfwildcamping  3 года назад

      Absolutely, even in winter I still prefer the knife over an axe, but both are definitely useful tools

      bwillan, what specific axe do you take with you when you are camping?(name brand etc, thanks). Am trying to gather as much information and knowledge as possible. I haven't used an axe in years but am hoping to get back into it! Thanks!

    • @bwillan
      @bwillan 3 года назад

      @@betsygodwin8938 I primarily winter camp and I have a 28" Fiskars splitting axe (older model). For winter back country camping I use a toboggan to haul my hot tent setup or I car camp, so weight isn't a huge issue. I like the fiskars brand of axes and hatchets. It's hard to beat their performance at their price point.
