- Getting criticized for your character or playstyle hurts sometimes.
It can make you feel worse about your skill as a player. But by following these five tips, hopefully it should be a lot easier to handle.

I thought game and watch was one of those characters where reads and combos are essentially to their moveset
I didn't even realize G&W had so much hate. The worst I see is in quickplay sometimes where they abuse parachute/dair or spam dsmash, but even I'll admit that 1) you should be able to counterplay that if you know what you're doing and 2) a whole bunch of other characters online do that too.
As a ryu main, when he said pikachus hard to hit and showed shaku going over his head, I felt that
shoto vs small characters just makes me want to give up on them.... it’s like they eliminate 2/3 of our kit and combos

The frustration of Tatsu going directly over Pichu's head trying to punish his projectile is one that has made me consider why I even play this game.

I hated on myself for maining G&W, and the second I realized how dumb he is, I switched to marth, and improved a lot. I guess I was able to play better without some guy from quickplay holding a gun to my head.

Honestly playing characters that can just put you on autoplay can actually make you worse because you forget about fundamentals and just spam the broken moves and hope you win
Noah Gabriel Domingo that’s a good point and what banana boy touched on. Good players will be able to punish your bad habits. A brain dead up b down air g&w will be punished consistently by a good player. A good g&w that mixes up landings and approaches will be formidable.

@@drk166 What do you mean, literally getting a 20 hit combo does like 30 damage. Then you have characters like Luigi and Peach who have TRUE combos that are either touch-of-deaths or get you to 60% from one grab.

It’s so funny because Melee is so spoiled with an aggressive meta and fast offensive characters that are fun to watch that one defensive character triggers the fuck out of them. Meanwhile in ultimate you have a good chunk of the roster and top tiers that play much more defensively and campy.
If they say your character is lame it just means you’re playing them right
If they get frustrated playing you all it means is that you’ve won the mental game
So true. Dabuz used to get so much hate during smash 4 for playing his zoning characters the way they were meant to be played
I suppose you can go about it that way, but as a person who wants to play a game and wants to have fun, I play characters that are intersting or atleast put a spin on them.
I also want the other player to have fun, I don't mind getting 3 stocked if it was fun or interesting. Seeing almost all Ness players down-throw F-air gets pretty boring after playing the game for an hour.
The competitive scene is different though, winning is winning. Does that excuse 'lame' playstyles? To some degree yeah, but if I've got the choice to watch an Olimar camp half of the game or watch Cpt. Falcon dittos, I'm definitely watching the latter.

OMG thank you!!!! It's literally the most awkward thing when the person you're playing with just goes like "Man, all you have to do is X" or "Why the fuck did that hit me that hitbox is so broken" or even things like "Why hasn't your character been nerfed yet?" God these people irritate me to no end, but usually I just agree and just let them vent. After watching this video, it feels good knowing that I was kinda doing the right thing, but it's still irritating either way.

Lexy they can still do combos and the up b oos is SO underrated. So they’d hate bayo simply cuz they just combo you and you can’t escape if you’re a fastfaller no matter how much sdi. I may be wrong but I think I got the only reason why they’d hate a Bayo who actually is very good
Lexy I am a bayo hater. My results against bayo are practically even. So why do I hate bayo. The match isn’t fun at all I can’t be in the air ever I have to play ultra re-save red and throw out aerials.
Bayos are still mashy as hell and get combos off of like anything. But they are very easy to wiff punish and they can struggle to kill.
Lexy it doesn’t matter Bayo isn’t a top tier but she definitely retained one thing from smash 4 that I’m sure she’ll always have. SHE ISNT FUN TO PLAY OR PLAY AGAINST. That’s why I despise her
Bayo can body anybody bigger/heavier than the shotos etc heavys most swordies and Snake. Her combos are borderline impossible to sdi unless your villager size or smaller.
Imagine thinking Peach mains are carried, TRY just TRY using her and mastering her tech. Her movement is by FAR the hardest part btw, which EVERYONE overlooks just because her float cancels combos are “broken”.

It’s sad that the technical stuff makes some characters really good, and for others it only makes a character barely tournament viable. Maiming Lucas, I’ve poured so much time into perfecting djcz’s, a frame perfect tech that allows strings of zairs. Mastering that only bumps him up a couple of spots am the tierlist tho T~T
To anyone maining a “low tier”, G&W was a low tier till Maister started getting big. You want your character to not be low tier? Show the world what that character can do, trust me if that is your best character it’s a great motivate to bring(Jr main here)

I think most hate comes from gimmicks. No one wants to lose to “the same thing” every time they play against a certain character. Which is why Bayo is still more hated than people like Falco, her entire play style is basically a gimmick and that isn’t any more fun than dealing with Palu nair
SamuraiC I prefer playing against bayo than falco because I know that the bayo has pit more time into mastering a difficult character and know that if I loose that I’ve been simply outplayed

But Yknow what, I don't regret it one bit, because if I didn't let it get to me I wouldn't have gotten so good at Lucas/Ness.
I don't know about my region as a whole, but I know the circles I end up playing Smash in don't have many (if any) Lucas /Ness players, and every now and again I'll get a compliment like "I didn't even know you could play them like that".

I never got mad the few times I went to tournaments. I think it's a lot easier to get mad online not only because of the latency stuff, but also because you don't get the sense that you're playing against another real person. Something to occasionally remind yourself of during distancing, I guess.

The reason I hate sonic is not because he's op or anything, but his roll. I would punish sonics doing their auto aim roll like 100 times and they'll keep spamming it like the brain dead monkeys they are. Same with ness, bowser, mac etc. Most people play them because they're monkeys and only spam a button, then after you punish them for the 100th time, you'll think they'll switch their gameplan or at least press another button, but nope. They'll continue to decrease the human race's IQ level.

Being a banjo main, i can 🆔 to this. “Side b” is all ever hear with complaints, even if i don’t use it the whole time. It shouldn’t matter if i did use it, i still worked hard to know how to utilize all the things i do use with my character and i still want to learn more.

As a Palu and Lucina main I’ve been dealing with the hate for a year and a half and it’s been so painful, I love playing them and just can’t understand why I’ve ever gotten hate. Just let me enjoy the game. Even with my distaste towards Joker, I can’t understand intensive character hate to such a major degree as I experience.
i have switched characters like a hundred million times because my training partner is the #1 whiner worldwide. it does get to you to have someone CONSTANTLY whining at you. i play sheik now. she’s the 2nd most fun character to me (only behind zss) so i guess it’s a happy ending. at least he doesn’t complain about sheik as much as he complains about literally every other character in the game

I have been playing with my friends online a lot recently (for obvious reasons) abd they are always yelling at me about how I'm not good and I'm only winning because of who I play. To be fair (and take that as a neutral point), Ness is one of the hardest characters to play against online. At least from my personal experience.

Not necessarily directed to you, but Ness is one of if not the most hated character in the game. Side b and up b are easily spammable and he has a really strong back throw (which is fine). If you are just going to main Ness in general, I recommend you to not spam these moves and maybe be a bit more creative with your play style. The reason people dont like Ness is because of mostly strictly side b and up b and how people abuse it. If you simply just dont spam these moves, then people should have no reason to hate you and are just salty they lost to you.
Or there's the other option which is to just play the character how you see fit, even if that means spam, but you will get hate. In most games, spamming is frowned upon as it seems so brain dead. This game is no exception.

I remember saying I play bowser, not maining him and someone called me a filthy bowser player when the only character I potentially main or have the most fun with is Byleth. There are 2 reasons for it: Byleth is the most hated DLC and I love Fire Emblem as a series, although as a gamer who's played most available FE games it does have it's problems as a game but I love it very much regardless. I'm surprised you didn't mention Esam in this. Pikachu is arguably the best character in the game with no discrete weaknesses besides his weight, so a lot of people give Esam shit for maining him. Esam's strategy is pretty much just acknowledging that "yes, Pikachu is very good, but I'm also good for being able to use him like this."
I honestly think ESAM is one of the few people who have really showcased Pikachu's true potential and got other people to get on that train of thought, but I think that's less about the character and more so that he's been so ride-or-die with Pikachu that he has worked his ass off to prove that character's high viability; it's not like Pikachu has 0 weaknesses, people are just willing to overlook them because they see how Pikachu looks at a top level.
I'm a Pac-Man/Hero Player and I get shit all the time from people because of "My Character Requires No Skill". Thanks for making me feel better about myself! I'm trying to become a competitive player myself and have made it on to my school team. Any tips? I primairly play Pac-Man, Hero, Mii Brawler, Banjo & Kazooie and Luigi.

edge lord 5 year old He’s trash if you exploit his weaknesses, which promotes a degenerate play style (AKA: camping out Mac), and it just ends up being no fun for either player. A character can be bad, but still annoying to fight against.
edge lord 5 year old because, if we’re talking at least mid to mid high level players, good Mac players will require you camp them out. Nobody wants to play like that, and if you try to just rush in against a Mac you can get stomped. Thus forcing you to camp to be effective

As someone who's been maining G&W since the game came out, it's been wild to go from being made fun of for playing a bad low tier to playing a very hated high/top tier. I always insisted he was good but no one listened until Maister proved what he can do.
So I don't really mind the hate. I'm just happy that people have finally realized G&W's potential.

When you main Joker, you have to be comfortable in knowing you have an "I win" meter and that people will call you out for it

Picked up smash two days ago. Started playing inkling because she’s so fun to dash around with and her recovery is nice for noobs. After being told she’s broken and I shouldn’t play her it just made me depressed and only wanna play against cpus
Inkling has a straight forward gameplan but they are in no way broken. IMO they are a bit hard to use for noobs too because effective Inklings need to lab combos and kill confirms. So, yeah, that hate is definitely not justified.

Well getting killed by Ken and Ryu just look like jab jab up b and getting killed at 60 by Terry looks like T-bag side b, but I main Bayo and a lot of people say “you’re just mashing B” so I guess it all comes down to who you main and what kind of hate you get
Their inputs are pretty simple as far as traditional fighters go. I think people get mad because of the auto-turnaround and early kills. It's tilting to get ledgetrapped by someone who's literally just holding the a button. Shoryu kills stupid early, is like frame 9 oos, has confirms, need I explain more? That being said, I like fighting these characters and pacman camps the ever loving shit out of them.

@@equinox-XVI It hurts when it does happen, but it just means I have to think and condition much more carefully to achieve anything meaningful. Makes the game more than just spam projectiles like when I'm fighting sonic or luigi. Maybe at times things will be visually boring for spectators, but it is a fun mental test for the player.
What about “5 tips to deal with hate towards you?” Because everyone has heard of the “Hungrybox Crab Incident” at least once and I think Hungrybox really doesn’t deserve that level of hate
