Had 5 boxers. Wanted a dobie. Did all the research before and still was shocked by mine. You hear "Velcro dog" but don't quite understand that until you own one.
My first dog was a doberman and the way he looks at you makes me want another one so bad, the way he was looking the door and the windows and your female dog was sitting on you lap. I think it's one of the most satisfying feelings when you pet loves you
I now have another Velcro breed after my last Dobe died at 5 from DCM. I now have a Vizsla. The biggest difference is that everyone loves to come say hi to my Vizsla. People were afraid to come say hi to my Dobermans even though they were gentle. I don’t like people so I love that people are scared of Dobes. I also see the protection side of Dobes as they would always put themselves between me and a stranger. The Vizsla will go to anyone for attention. Both breeds are very Velcro. As of now, the Doberman is still my favorite because I love the protection aspect.
I just got my first doberman. He's 10mnths old and I say he fell into my lap. Because I got him from a shelter. I was looking into getting one from breeder because I've always been a massive fan of the breed but living situations never fell in the right place. Now I own my home and no one can tell me what to do. I did a shit load of research on the breed before I got one, But there were still somethings that you can only learn after having one.
Everytime I see dog fights it’s usually a small dog, bulldog, or doodle. Sometimes pitties but people just let dogs do whatever they want and don’t understand dog body language/behavior. So this type of stuff is going to continue until people do their research and learn dog behavior. Imo
The so called pitties usually arent pits or well bred to begin with will say true apbt even amstaffs can show aggression towards other dogs . Usually game bred apbt are great if you dont want a dog social dog and want to do hella activities
I'm actually on my 2nd set of Dobermans... My 1st set was my Female her name was Pepper and male his name was Diablo... Pepper lived to be 7.5 years old she passed because of bone cancer... Diablo lived to be 12 years old he also ended up getting cancer as well.. Now I have two litter mate bothers Jango and Boba.. Now I know alot of people are against having Littermates. BUT no issues my ways the boys get along great!! They get everything equal and plenty of exercise i have a five acre yard and Frisbee is their favorite thing to play!! They are actually awesome at catching it!! Also I don't breed so they was both neutered as soon as our vet said it was safe to do!! Enjoy the videos keep them coming!! Great looking set of Dobermans you have!! All 4 of mine are the Black and tan as well
Accurate description of the breed. Currently on 6th dobie. Lost 1 to DMC. Females tend to be more clingy, the males more whiny. Had 2 that sucked their flanks. Not aggressive but will react if they feel you or family is threatened. Have one female that I have to crate when physical therapist comes to house, everything was good until my elderly mother cried out when therapist was exercising her knee after surgery. The dobie instinct kicked in immediately! Female more in tune with family than the males. Great video on educating about the breed.
Thank you for the candid discussion in this video and your others, especially about the health. I had a dog from working-lines of another "alternative" or "off" breed for the sports. I would occasionally see Dobermann's at the Malinois appreciation and envy clubs. My dog was healthy and lived 14.5 years, but his healthcare costs, especially at the beginning and the very end were high because I was willing to do whatever my total commitment to him required. I'm thinking very carefully before I might suffer being powerless to help my dog live a full life. As for the underachievement in the sports, I adapted to that. There are only a few years that a dog is in its prime for trials and competition, and their life is so much more than just those years. I like how you characterized in your other video the intention for the Dobermann to have been more about intimidation and wariness than actual manfighting. I've never been the victim of violence, and I intend never to be. I believe a suitable dog is a deterrent to potential offenders and a vigilant dog is also a great partner to me in maintaining situational awareness. I'm trained and equipped to protect myself and my dog. Because I am trained in the legal aspects of self-defense and also in the skills of vigilance, avoidance, de-escalation, and use of force, I am not impressed by fake personal protection dog scenarios or the washed-out sport dogs that perform them. I do have respect for the dogs that excel at the sports as some kind of test of the breeding and a validation of training methods, while recognizing that is a very different set of circumstances. I hope you continue to enjoy your dogs for a very long time.
This was super informative. Thanks for the reminder about the breed ban in some countries. TOTALLY slipped my mind to check for the country I plan on living. Also your editing is HILAROUS! The random velcro dobie and the random *pow* sounds.
The best dog I ever had was a Doberman. Supposedly the shelter was going to put her down. My grandkids could hug her and pet her even when she was old and blind. My only problem was that a lot of campgrounds wouldn’t let us stay because of the breed.
Generally good info here. Just wanted to add that sometimes even if you own your home, you may need to check if your home is part of an association, because some associations restrict dog breeds too, and sadly, Dobermans are often on that list.
I met a Doberman for the 1st time in an elevator. I was already in the elevator, it stopped at the next floor . In walked in my neighbor and his huge Doberman. I admit I was a bit startled 😢. Upon entering the Doberman walked in and leaned his whole body into my legs and looked up at me with the sweetest face . My neighbor and I burst out laughing. The neighbor nervousness said he ok he ok my dog is quite a "leaner" on people 😂❤😅.
Doberman rescue groups are a good place to adopt one. Even puppies sometimes. But some are very particular about who they allow to adopt. But most are reasonable rules for happy forever homes for the dogs.
Mine is search and rescue & bombs/drugs background. Has ipo gene. Saved me from a carjacker w/knife and crazy dog at the park and a guy that jumped into my bkyrd at 3am! He got between us and warned them all very actively! They are known for biting. You just have to get them to LATCH on instead of bite repeatedly on same spot. The german pincher i have is a biter so they play together!
This is exactly the kind of vid I needed! Thank you so much. I love this kind of breed and their personality but I don't think they'll fit in the kind of life we have right now.... I guess it'll be love from a distance for now. :)
For some reason I have always preferred male dogs so same sex aggression is something I always try to avoid when picking a breed. I own a bullmastiff and a boxer, both intact males. They are best friends!
I have a two year old male euro dobie. What’s your opinion on neutering and did you do it for Draco? Why or why not? I’m having a hard time with the decision.
Don’t need to have an intact male unless you plan to breed him, and that in itself isn’t a good idea for anyone not an expert. Too many backyard idiots thinking to make money. Too many unwanted dogs already. And having puppies is not easy or cheap.
Aw man I wish I had known about dobermans being an off breed in bite sports before I got a show line. Mine loves to bite and that's not an issue, but he struggles to engage and just doesn't have the drive to work (and find that work rewarding in and of itself) like the belgians, dutchies, and GSDs in my club. It's been something I have just had to come to terms with, that my dog will likely never perform on the same level as those dogs, and is going to be much harder to motivate.
the thing I struggle the most with my German Shepards is the winning, it gives me anxiety.... I mental stimulate them, I take them to exercise, anything, ive ignored them.. my biggest problem is them whining in the car nonstop
The looking up and hitting me in the eye, forehead, etc that hurts very badly is one of the biggest pains! Sometimes he cries to get on the bed w/me. And not wanting to eat his food...then eating a blanket or his bed or my shoes instead! Not sure why he prefers non edible things as opposed to his bones, kibble, canned!! He also is so shy that he wont eat if im too close to the bowl or stops if i move, leave room, make any noise...frustrating!
Honestly it’s not even a scary look, I currently owned and as a kid grew up with one for over a decade and also Rotty, boxer and pitbull and bully. They’re just robust athletic and they’re elegant . They present power and mean business
Do you think there are a lot of differences between American Dobermans and European doberman? The breeders I’ve found through the club have all been european dobermans, i havent been able to find a reputable american doberman breeders
I heard that American dobermans are a bit more nervy and agitated unlike the European which is ironically apparently more docile in natural nature, training is a must regardless for such a powerful dog
I don’t disagree with anything. But “bite” dogs need to bite on command. Dobermans need to be in a pack to attack… so two Dobermans fight to the death. They were meant like many dogs before “pets” to be paired. My paired team is a Duke Doberman male alpha. Val female Great Dane (real alpha) Daisy bloodhound tracker (omega). They hunt on their own but won’t kill anything but coyotes. With me they will kill on command/ not kill on command. If we could live half as good as these pups lives… there’d be no issues, but we’ve got to deal with fuck yards… ready the cannons! 👍 video

Why do you keep allowing that dog to push into you and demand attention like that? It bad manners in behalf of the dog. They are beautiful but look so much better without cropped ears.

DCM is rampant with Dobes. Owned them for 60 years. Theres a test to see if yours has the gene. Kit is from Univ OF nEBRASKA IF i REMEMBER RIGHT.
Good to know the test for dcm genes is only useful for american dogs. Doesnt work on european doberman @@donwadd9143
