Essentially it's a song about a friend who you know is never going to make it as they are not that talented, but you try to be supportive because telling them the truth would crush them. Morrissey has said it was about a specific person and that when they heard the track they knew immediately it was about them and it caused a fight. Several candidates have been rumoured but there is also an argument that he is actually singing about his younger self ("another song about the Queen, or standing around the shops with thieves"). The song was co-written with Smith's bassist Andy Rourke. It's been noted that the song has very similar melodies to a 60's girl group track, "Only To Other People" by The Cookies.
