Jeff, we are gonna send you a thank you donation.
I think you are an angel. I just showed this video to my husband. We are living in an older 50's "renovated" lake cottage that we needed desperately for my disabled daughter in a wheelchair. This floor layout was the only house that worked for her on the first level that we could afford. We looked within our price range for over a year. This guy that "renovated" it we we were taking risk with. Even the new deck squeeks. We didn't know he built the entire new deck out of finishing nails. Squeak squeak! The living room floor is carpeted and so is my daughter's room and we know it wasn't built with screws and it is very unlevel. We are no spring chickens.
    Thank God we found you.

Jeff, thank you sooooooo much for a video series like this one.... I'm about to embark on a flooring replacement project in our home that is going to be installed by a floor pro... and seeing this video will allow me to confirm that things are indeed done the right way!... there are tons of squeaks in our 1940's home and some unlevel flooring in our living room... you really helped me understand how this can be fixed. I truly appreciate it.

Jeff, I have watched many of your videos. Being in the U.S. (Michigan), I can relate to a lot of the advice you give. This video alone has saved me a LOT of headaches. (and I thought I bought a planer just for doors).I am renovating a townhouse built in the 80's and I just took up the tile floor in the bathroom. Without seeing this video, the first thing I did was fix the squeaks in the floor with screws. I used construction screws, then laid 3/4" plywood over the subfloor, to bring up the level of the floor to somewhat it was before the 1" square tile and mortar was removed. I also am doing floating floor in the hallway and that small but very important transition demonstrations you showed, have now saved me a big headache to transition from marble threshold to floating floor in the hallway. THANKS!!! I really appreciate your help! I enjoy the solid advice as well as your honest approach in helping DIYer's like myself. Once again, Thank You!!

Built new houses for a short time in the states. Some houses we uses collated screws and long screw gun to screw down 1 inch decking. Other homes they has us bent over with the nail guns adding more nails right before the flooring was done. Nothing pissed us off more than to go into the sales model and fix the squeaks from the basement because they wouldn't pay for us to screw down the subfloor to save $2-300 (1 guy less than 1 day) in labor plus the cost of screws. They were also skimping on giving us enough glue for the subfloor. It was about how fast we built not how good we built it.

I am an electrician working in the United Kingdom. I am not sure how they do the plumbing and cabling in the USA and Canada but here much of piping and cables in older properties are laid in slots. The last time a carpenter offered to take some flooring up for me, using a circular saw, he did exactly what you did ie. Set the depth of the blade slightly deeper than the floorboards. As a result I had an hour repairing the cables he sawed through. Perhaps you could mention that for UK watchers.

I grew up in a Sears house built in 1920. The floor joists were 2X12 and the subfloor was 1 inch thick shiplap installed at 45 degrees to the floor joists. On top was 1 inch thick white oak 2 inch wide tongue and groove. A special paper was used between the subfloor and the oak floor boards. None of the floors on the first or second floor ever squeaked. The oak flooring was attached with cut nails through the tongue. The only visible nail holes were where we added boards during a renovation. That is how we found the paper. The paper was green. It was not asphalt impregnated paper.

WOW! The amount of information in this 1 video is so valuable! I live in the second apartment of my house in northeast USA, its 117 years old, with tongue and groove wood planks nailed directly to the floor joists in the bedrooms and kitchen. The bedroom floors are in horrible condition (too thin to refinish, chipped boards, holes, oh my!) I want to install LVP flooring. Can I just put a 1/4 plywood over the wood planks? If I need to pull up the wood planks and install subfloors, what thickness would I use? 😮😮

Really comprehensive instruction. Thanks Jeff. I have the RIDGID JobMax oscillating tool which has the multi-head feature that provides different heads for different purposes. The right angle drill head is great for both drilling and driving screws and will get into anywhere with about 4 inches of clearance. Lots of power to bore through studs with any drill bit and up to about a 2-1/2" hole saw bit. JobMax is a mid range tool, but with the lifetime warranty it's hard to beat.

Our old house (built in 1965) had a squeaky second floor. After trying to tighten up the floor with screws , we still had squeaks. At a later date while working in the kitchen soffit I noticed that the contractor had use 1/2” cello-Tex on top of all the joists , under the subfloor, of the second floor. Over time the Cello-Tex had deteriorated to the point where it was mostly dust but some solids which meant regardless of the number of screws it was always going to squeak. Although annoying at first it’s came in handy when the teenager tried to sneak in after hours!

I've never seen screws in the US called "flooring screws" but I would expect that a good rated GRK general screw would do the job. We DO have anti-squeak screw kits that are meant to be installed over carpet with heads that sheer off to avoid a bump or visible head. Those are specialty products, though.

Everyone loves a "nice, clean hole." One thing to note on the drill bits is that the titanium and cobalt drills are just coatings. Any drill you buy at local hardware stores are high speed steel with some coatings (titanium or cobalt). I don't find that the durability of the coatings just the cost, especially when you can just touch up a drill with as little as a file and it only takes a few seconds.

Hi Jeff, How would you replace a small piece of subfloor under a wall and between the floor joists where the floor joists are open from the room below? The bathroom was left wet and is that subfloor is now gross, won't hold screws, and is flaking apart. Most of the area that needs to be replaced is in the center of the room, but there is about 6" that goes under the wall that I would still like to replace. Also, thank you. You have made huge impact in my self esteem. I have taken a house that sat on the market for over 6 months, headed up the renovations (with some expert help when needed and to check my work) and created a beautiful and safe home. Adjectives like creative, hard working, resourceful, amazing, and beautiful now sit more comfortably with me after seeing for myself what I was able to do.

Great information just thought I would add some trivia about the regular drills also called twist drills most commonly made of HSS high speed steel today. The colors other than silver are coatings to aid in durability of the cutting edge black (black oxide) gold (titanium nitride). If they mention cobalt they are referring to the alloys in the HSS for wood cobalt probably would not make much of a difference. The name high speed reportedly came from the fact when it was introduced machinists could turn stock on the meal lathe at much higher speeds with out burning up their tools.

If your home has diagonal lumber as your subfloor.... use 2- 3/4" or 3" construction screws, depending on the era, it may be 2" dimensional, or it may be 2" actual so measure before purchasing. Drive one screw in the center of each plank every time it crosses a joist (usually between the two nails they drove in the plank during construction). If you have an area of major squeakage and have access underneath, lift af the edge of the plank with a pry, and stick in a dab of dap before going back upstrais to screw them down.

I work at a Lowes in New Jersey, hardware dept. and I can say for a fact we do not have flooring screws. But I did find them online on our website which are the squeek no more. We do have a ton of multi purpose screws, wood screws and construction screws but I don't know if you can use those in its place. If anyone knows inform me cause I'll be buying an old home soon and will probably replace the floors.

So I have a concrete floor, should I still put in a subfloor over it? And if so, should it also be 2x10? If I’m tiling I think I probably should be 2x10…
I’m building a barndominium, so the subfloor cavity will also give me space for insulation (rock wool).

Question. I just pulled my sub floor in my living room to replace one of the seals and it was built with 2x6 with 16in span and 8 ft support so that's what I went back in with. But all I hear you say is 2x10.. so my question is what u have ok and is there something I need to do to strengthen it before putting in the plywood subfloor? Thank you in advance

Hi Jeff! I absolutely love your videos and learned so much about doing everything right. We bought our first home though it's only a condo but would like to do some updating on it. We'd like to start on updating the flooring and this video is so great! I do have a question though, we are the top floor end unit and we'd to like to make the floor quiet for the people below us. What do you recommend for what thickness and type of pad we should use? Also, the condo have 3 types of flooring laminate (i think), linoleum, and some tiles (front door and front of fireplace) my questions is do we have to remove all the floorings before putting a new flooring? We are still not sure what to use for type of flooring but we are on a budget. Please let us know what do you think we should do. Thank you and keep the awesome videos coming! :-)

I have a 3/4" plywood floor over 2x10 joist on 16" centers, glued and nailed. I removed the ceramic tile in the kitchen after 35 years. I'm replacing it with a floating LVT planks. I need to add a underlayment of 1/4" to match the thickness of the old ceramic. How should that underlayment be screwed to the plywood?

in UK we have moved away from wood floors & we mainly use pre-cast concrete slabs now, simply because concrete dont burn & wood here is not so easily available as it is in canada.

Are your floor joist still wood or are the precast too? Just curious.

I’m in New Berlin, WI in a 1940’s home. I am trying to finish my basement. I demo’d all the old framing. My basement floor is not level. Slopes down from all sides to the center about a 2” variance. I planned to put down the blue DMX > 23/32 OSB > all new framing over OSB > laminar plank flooring. Will this solution work? Are there any other layers I should anywhere in this process?

Jeff, your parting comment about tongue and groove hardwood - are you saying that you can install t/g hardwood without leveling your subfloor? maybe because it allows more room for error since it's nailed? thanks for sharing!

Hi, I have to remove about 1000 square feet of subfloor, put in insulation, duct work, electrical, then put the subfloor back down. Instead of doing it this way, I thought perhaps I could use a hole saw to cut a plug around each nail, all the way through the subfloor. Then I could lift the entire sheet straight up, and when ready, simply set it back down in exactly the same place. Use screws near each nail, and seal the slight gap around each nail with calk or something. This way I wouldn'T have to put put in all that blocking. What do you think?

What if your floor is only particle board? I don't have OSB at all in the mobile home. I have to support the edges because if i don't the old floor well start to crack. Also for what ever reason the 2x10 beems are, well one is lower the the one next to it. Every even beam is lower the the one next to it.

Jeff Home Depot carries two different types of"floor screws"
#1 Squeeeeek No More, replacement screws, 250 for $25.13.
    AND
#2 Grip Rite, star drive, bugle
    head construction screw.
I thought just using a regular ring-shank could do the job, but???
