Beetlejuice the Musical seemed like a simple enough concept in theory. Once it began its journey towards Broadway, however, things got...complicated. Wait in the Wings is back in a big way by diving into the hectic history of Beetlejuice the Musical.

in many ways Beetlejuice grew in the same way that heathers did: with a great social media presence; the only difference being that Beetlejuice started gaining a fanbase while still on broadway as opposed to Heathers with it's rise through a bootleg some time later. Let's just hope that Beetlejuice gets the love it deserves through its national tour and a hopeful move to the west end, especially as the west end is more internationally available in comparison to broadway.
Yeah, just compare the price of Hamilton tickets between broadway and the west end and it’s obvious that the west end is more accessible. The cheapest Hamilton Broadway tickets are like $300 whereas the cheapest West End ones are like £30
I mean heathers is kinda bad
Prewprew To quote The Dude, “Thats like, your opinion, man”
@@prewprew3959 that is your opinion, the musical got good reviews off broadway and it has a massive fanbase.
Tedious Totoro i saw hamilton on the west end back in 2018 and I ended up next to a pair of friends who flew from australia to see it as the west end is more affordable, meaning that they could watch more shows
Imagine how much money Broadway could make if they just filmed the damn things.
Every Broadway show is filmed. They're just never released.
Bryan Loy is there a reason to that?
@@TaiyouSun-cz7vl I'm sure it's because of some BS copyright reasons
Taiyou. Sun Sure Copyright is one of those, but royalties and a lot of other moving parts makes it extremely hard to be profitable.
I think about this a lot... and it would prevent bootlegs too which the actors hate
I love the acknowledgement that Presley Ryan almost singlehandedly saved the show when it wasn’t making back its money in the initial run. I feel like she doesn’t get enough credit for this!
She really doesn't
@@stephpiano2908 yes she did she promoted it a lot on tiktok getting tiktok viewers into the show and that is how she promoted it
@@thinmints4life I think steph meant she really doesnt get enough credit, not that she didn't save the show
Live Love Theater no, they meant that she doesn’t get enough credit
@@thinmints4life who was she playing originally before she was lydia?
WHAT? LOWERING THE TICKET PRICE MAKES IT MORE ACCESSIBLE? WHAAAAT? WHAT A CRAZY IDEA!!!
YES!! honestly i’ve tried going to other broadway shows but beetlejuice so far has had the cheapest orchestra tickets in a broadway show i’ve been to, they always range from 100-200 but both times i saw beetlejuice it was pretty decent and really good seats, first time was 70 and the second was 80 but that is pretty good for some orchestra tickets. Honestly broadway should make shows more accessible tickets are so expensive, releasing pro shots would be good!
You can't really do that, yet again you can. Statistically speaking, they'd be getting the same out of money, maybe even more, because the prices are lower. But they'd be taking a HUGE risk by doing so. I know Beetlejuice the musical has a big fandom, but it doesn't have.. enough.. demand.
plus there are added costs of hotels, food, flights if people arent local, etc. in an ideal world id love to see broadway be more accessible but they really cant afford that
Oh don't worry, now the national average for Beetlejuice tickets is $120 a pop! 🙃
This video is my first time hearing they lowered the ticket sales and kinda feel jipped I went early. Oh well, still a good show.
I'm still so mad that Beetlejuice never won the Tony for set design.
We all are 😒
I'm never gonna be freaking over it.
TRUTH! I love Hadestown (it's honestly my favorite musical ever), but Beetlejuice DESERVED that tony.
I know! It has a great set!
That probably the only Tony I really wanted it to get, but i was FURIOUS when it got ROBBED
Look, I absolutely love Hadestown but Beetlejuice 100% deserved the Tony awards for set and lighting
hadestown is my favorite musical of all time but even i can respect the absolutely incredible work that went into the beetlejuice set (it totally deserved that tony!)
Same.
Lexa The Snake one million percent YES
YES I AGREE
@@floatinjellies I agree, I'm really proud of Hadestown and I absolutely adore the set. It is a good use of the space and it, like all art forms, is subjective. However, Beetlejuice also had a clever set in that it is key to the storytelling. Hadestown had the lights in wait for me and the sinking stage for arriving in the underworld. But the set for Beetlejuice is cleverly transformed throughout the show, includes a lot of intricate details- some of which pay homage to the original source material- and overall, I believe it shows a much higher level of skill.
Hadestown is brilliant and the set design is perfect for the show so I am very glad it won the Tony and yet the set of Beetlejuice was also perfect and visually incredible. I'm not mad about it, I was just surprised by the final choice as it was not the answer I would have chosen.
Sorry for rambling and remember, this is just the opinion of a stranger on the internet.
(Also, like with a lot of things I see people online comparing, they are too different to state that either is "better")

Beetlejuice was a damn fun musical, and it quite possibly had the saddest end to its Broadway run it could’ve

I Like Life same... I got into it literally yesterday, and then I find out it ended like 2 months ago. I always join fandoms late :(
I Like Life I mean, heathers was off broadway, so, yeah...
It's amazingly poetic how a show about death was cut short from a potentially major turn-around and basically *killed* because of something so bizarre and out of nowhere as a major global pandemic that threatened the lives of most people. Cut short just as it was hitting its stride. Tragic and sad, but hey, that's what the show is for.
And weirdly enough, I feel like the pandemic will also make Beetlejuice more likely to return because of how it deals with death. I think it will resonate with even more people.
@@TheHorselessCantor I would *love* it if one of the jokes Beetlejuice has if it returns is, "Handbook for the Recently Revived Musical," or "We're Back from the Dead, Baby!"

when i saw beetlejuice in november, i absolutely bawled my eyes out. it was incredible. i couldn’t even grasp the fact that i was even sitting in the theater. i was so excited and happy; it was one of the best nights of my life. i met about six members of the cast after the show and they were so kind and so grateful and i was just in awe of them. i look up to each and everyone of them so much. beetlejuice deserved so much better. SO much better.
"No Reason" was my first exposure to Beetlejuice the Musical. The sardonic humor of the lyrics and quirky playfulness of the music immediately drew me in. I'm glad that musicals like Beetlejuice and Heathers are starting to push back against the stereotype of Broadway as a "old rich white people" thing. And yes, hopefully we can get that sweet, sweet 4K video release.

Wait in the Wings do you think that The Music Man might face some difficulties audience wise when it opens?

how bout six the musical? i wuld like to see u do a video on that
Wait in the Wings Thank you so much for this! I must have taken so much work! This is what all of us needed!
Mattbrain buuut The Music Man is also a pretty old show and I would imagine that despite having Hugh Jackman in the lead, they still might face a road block with the fact that the younger audience craves something unique and hasn’t already been done before.
Amazing video! You should do a video on Be More Chill and what wrong when it went to broadway. Great comet of 1812 has so much to it and people would go crazy if you did a video on it. Hope you well in this crazy time

This nearly had me in tears, Beetlejuice 100% deserved better. I think that while it's not traditionally emotionally hard-hitting like the typical Broadway audience may expect, it's FUN and RELATABLE to a young audience. Sometimes you just want to leave the theatre feeling warm and fuzzy inside humming the tunes, and not bawling your eyes out having an existential crisis

I saw Lestat during its pre-Broadway run in San Francisco and I still get songs from it stuck in my head sometimes. It’s not that bad!
I don’t know about the “nothing for Eddie perfect in Australia “ he’s very successful here and written several musicals here and was a major character on a long running TV series lol. Also, some of those pictures were not with his real wife but the character he was with on the TV show
I think he said "nothing left for Eddie" meaning he'd explored all his options already

It makes it worse this show is not going to get a send off of a closing night thanks to covid 19. I really hope this comes to the west end theatres I really want to see it i love the film and the songs get stuck in your head. The uk willy wonka and the chocolate factory was a lot better they used all children for the children parts I don’t know why they changed so much ,they don’t change anything with Matilda the musical it had some things change but it was pretty much the same. I hope the Schubert’s are really going to regret kicking out beatlejuice because they are not going to get music man any time soon with everything being closed. I hope they fill so good about there choice know because there losing so much money.
Minecraft Builds I really hope they can have just one more show to close the show fully
Lottie well it got hope to stay know because there going to spend a lot of money putting a new show on after things open back up so they won’t want to spend millions on a new show right away after losing millions. I feel it’s going to stay there for another year I’ve looked at how much they are losing and it’s going to be stupid if they put a new show on it’s less money running a show that’s already there
@@thebananacraft7298 Seems to make sense, in theory. But I don't know the specifics of how those things work however I imagine the investors are the ones paying the bulk to open it and the theater gets their agreed upon "rent" maybe its adjusted for when they open they get more, or a portion of sale who knows. It used to be the theater gets their "rent" while having the option to put money towards producing some shows, or "lending" money to the producers ala discounted rent. They would often invest somehow into the shows because without their money/discounts the producers wouldn't be able to put it on and that would mean an empty theater. But a big show like TMM likely would be able to make their rent even before the doors open. But clearly now, with no shows running they're all at a loss.
Plus in normal times once they officially "close" all of the cast and crew would start looking/booking other jobs presuming their contracts are terminated but maybe their contracts are still running until june? And who knows how long TMM stars will stick around, with no show running that's eating into their contracted time.
So yeah, a lot of balls in the air at this point... since these are nowhere near "normal" times and there's no official resume to normal function date... guess we'll be doing a lot of hoping and who knowsing for the foreseeable future. But it definitely was a very... odd, to say the least, ending for BJ.
There’s talks of them finding a new theatre
I know! I'm still bummed out that I never got the chance to see it before this whole covid 19 stuff happened, especially because I don't even live close to New York at all! All I can do is listen to the cast album constantly. Also, the songs get stuck in my head too! I really hope that I can see it on tour whenever they come close to where I live though.

I finally got to see this show on broadway last week and it is my favorite musical of all time (and I saw Hadestown and Hamilton the month before in my hometown). I honestly think it’s even better than the movie. The references are so great and I love the raunchy jokes. I can’t wait to see it again when it comes to my city on tour, June can’t come any sooner
Can you do Bonnie and Clyde. It closed after 28 shows but it was actually pretty good and got mixed reviews. Why did it close so early?
Omg please, that show deserved so much better
Omg yes. I played Young Bonnie in a local theatre’s production a few years ago & it always makes me sad how it closed so quickly on Broadway.
I am extremely proud to say that Beetlejuice really WAS my first ever Broadway experience, complete with the OG Broadway cast (sand Rob McClure). I had fallen in love with the soundtrack long before I had the chance to finally see it live. I use the word “experience” instead of “show” because it WAS an experience. It truly immersed the audience into its strange and unusual realm, a universe so true to Burton’s style and yet a world all of its own. It wasn’t afraid of the dark and the somber, or the creepy and the crass. It was there to be its crazy, kooky self that had a beautiful heart at its core. Like everyone and everything in the show, Beetlejuice The Musical as a whole was a character, and a force that broke down the traditional walls and united generations of audiences. I still strongly believe in its afterlife post-Winter Garden, and will ALWAYS treasure and support it wherever it drifts to next. To the cast, the crew, and to all of the incredible fans all over the world: Hey guys? Love you guys. 💚🕷💚🕷💚
I’m still obsessed with beetlejuice, it pains me how the show fell. But as someone who was there on every social media when the show was at its peak. I have to tell you it was beautiful. It was an amazing fan base, mostly composed of the younger audience so everybody was more accepting. It was beautiful
Thing is, where big companies evict musicals that appeal to us, the younger audience, when the generation they're trying to target dies, we will remember how inaccessible broadway was to us personally and support the smaller businesses that listened to us.
The mention of the Broadway shutdown after 9/11 got me thinking - what about a What Went Wrong for the Rocky Horror Show revival?
can you do what went wrong with CARRIE: The Musical, that show lasted only 5 performances.
YESSSS
Omg Yes! That is a perfect idea.
Wow only 5?! That's insane! Was it really that bad?
Please yes I need this!!
I really hope that Eddie Perfect keeps getting the chance to produce more Broadway music. He is an incredible musician and the musical scene is better for having him
Holy Musical B@tman did everything Batman: The Musical never could
No doubt Beetlejuice will experience the same amount of success that a show like The Addams Family (which I think would make a great subject for a future video) garnered post-broadway. I'd still like to hope that Beetlejuice can find new life on Broadway, but with everyday that passes (and your informational video) it seems more unlikely.
Here's to hoping that the world straightens out in time for the 2021 national tour, you best be knowing I'll be buying a ticket ASAP 🤞
Me too especially doing of video what went wrong or right with Addams family I could see that
Like how my school was gonna do the show but we basically got snubbed because of Covid-19. In a few days we would have had our first show for the Addams family but this happened.

I think an update on this show would be super cool to watch, since they’ve found a way to start it again (and also the fact that Broadway was closed way longer than that 😅)
Agree. But perhaps he’s waiting until Beetlejuice officially closes to add anything.
I’m so glad Alex Brightman found work in Helluva Boss, I hope to see a DVD of the 4K footage in the future
Or seeing streamed on HBO Max too. (Just like the original cast of Hamilton on Disney+). Still that would be pretty cool
11:30 I can 100% imagine Joe Walker (from "Holy Musical B@man") singing this and it being actually watchable lmao
Some of his lines(spoilers???):
"Batman... Batman loves the circus".
"Can I tell you something I've never told anyone? Except a couple of my ex-girfriends. And my old butler. And my new butler. I'm Batman!:o"
"-Tonight will be a night...
[Robin]: of dancing!
- ...yeah!"
"Support your families like the rest of us. Be born millionaires."
"Fractured spleen! Shattered tibia! Watch your patellar tendons!"
"I'm vengeance. I'm the night, so stay out of my way! Love, Batman."
Oh no I'm rewatching the whole thing again
Goddamn it WITW, as a Beetlejuice musical fan, this was very cathartic to watch. I never got the chance to watch this show live (since I'm an Aussie) but I love the soundtrack and visual aesthetic dearly. If Spongebob got a second life recorded for Nickelodeon, I hope something similar will happen for Beetlejuice. Great work as always, guys.
Also, holy crap, Defunctland is one of your Patreon Sponsors? Have you guys considered doing a video on....... anything yet?
PS I'm really happy somebody's talked about that Batman musical that was going to be made :)
I heard theres a beetlejuice slime tutorial here on youtube! (Trust me, just search it, you wont be disappointed, its a tutorial about death)
Beetlejuice is back!
i’m crying rn. i got into the show only a few weeks ago but it has become my newest theater obsession and it makes me so upset to know that could’ve maybe seen it if i got into it earlier this year
On Feb 19th 2020, I flew to New York City to see Beetlejuice. It was my first Broadway show, with Hadestown immediately after. And one of the best, if not THE BEST, musical I have ever seen. The acting was raucous and fun. The music perfect. The set design and lighting the most spectacular and dazzling thing I had laid eyes on. I was grinning ear to ear after years of not really smiling. It was amazing. And I am beyond sad that it was shut down. I wanted to see it again. I wanted to take my Mom and my sister. We are all a little strange and unusual and its exactly the kind of musical for us.
I hope beyond hope that they are able to do a tour run when covid is over. And am crossing my fingers for a digital/dvd/blueray release.
Im hoping the success of the Hamilton movie release will show Broadway that they can make money even when its filmed.
I love Beetlejuice. I dont want it to die.
Why can't official musical channels give this much information. I want to know if it will come to west end, how many actors will stay with the show, and if it closes for good, HOW MUCH WILL THE SANDWORM BE ON EBAY!!!
Many people don’t know about this but the Beetlejuice’s ticket sales, while the number of seats they filled was very high, we’re relying on rush tickets sales or sales from day of performances. Their advanced ticket sales were not great and without that stability, their investors couldn’t invest 4 more million with good faith.
Also, about the Sophia thing, the production tried very hard to keep it tight lipped because they didn’t need any bad publicity detracting customers with the expensive price tag of the move on their mind. I know what happened but I won’t say just cause it’s a nasty story and it makes me sad.
I like this show and I hope with every fiber of my being that they can make the move somewhere (the only thing backing that for me is the cast’s tweets and posts) but my mind is telling me otherwise.
Is there any truth to the rumor about her fighting with Alex Brightman? You don't need to go into detail, but I'm curious because I always found that hard to believe. Alex seems like the type who gets along with everyone he meets.
I’m curious to know what happened in more detail with Sophia, where would I be able to learn about it?
maaan I really am dying to know what happened w Sophia lol
is there anywhere you can direct us to learn more about it???
MiniMimi Elizabeth Foust there’s an article about it from The NY Times that gives the info. nypost.com/2020/02/27/beetlejuice-on-broadway-loses-its-lydia/
Just go to Reddit. A lot of people with connections there who have loose fingers
Kinda sad watching this seeing the whole "Broadway is closed until June 7th so they missed it by one day" as some dramatic tragedy. Here I am watching on August of 2021 and Broadway is still not opening until next month.
I really think they should give it a shot on the West End. The English sense of humour is already pretty dark so I think it might give it a popularity boost. Plus Cats started in the West End and I don't think it would have taken off as well if it had been Broadway...
PLEASE PLEASE DO A WHAT WENT WRONG WITH CARRIE THE MUSICAL YOUR VIDEOS ARE SO GOOD!!!!
WHY WAS THERE A CARRIE THE MUSICAL?!
Ingrid Bjørnstad That’s where it went wrong 😂
@@ingridbjrnstad4763 i really like the music...
Doesn't anybody ever get it right?
Doesn't anybody think that I hear?
@@ingridbjrnstad4763 listen first before asking why
I think another issue with the show was how lacking the relationship between Lydia and her dad was. It's the emotional thesis of the show, and yet we never got enough of them. I got to see it in it's final week of previews, and while it was a wonderful spectacle with brilliant performances, I left marveled at the spectacle; not the music, performance, etc.
It's unfortunate that a show with such imagination behind it didn't work from a financial perspective. I hope that it finds a new home at a different theater.
The fact that this cast never got to have a real final show because of COVID-19 is one of the bigger tragedies this pandemic has caused. This cast had a such a tight bond as many show casts do. There's something special about performing theater, that's why you always hear about theater families much more often than film families. And that final show is so integral to that feeling of comradery. It's a weird sense of loss that isn't traumatizing but still brings the cast closer together. But finding out afterward that a show was your last IS traumatizing in a minor way. It's heartbreaking instead of bittersweet. You never get a chance to say goodbye to the cast, to the set, to the characters, to the costumes, to the music, it rips that process away from you. I hope the talks of a tour go through and most of the cast is able to come back to be a part of it, cause they deserve closore.
One of my most favorite musical. I watched it like 8 times the year I moved to NYC and 4 times before it moved from winter garden. Underrated musical.
yess
If Broadway wasn't a sucker for the Platt family everything would've been different.
What do you mean by that? Because if you’re talking about Ben Platt and his father, then real talk, your comment is giving me some real antisemitic vibes
Hella Lit! with Natalia Dozier-Torrelio he’s more talking about his dad as a producer and stuff. and i didn’t see any antisemitic comments?
@@natisdreamland HUH? I’m sick of the internet
@@natisdreamland So if you don’t love everything Jewish people do, it’s antisemitism? Uh…that’s not how it works.
I’m still holding on to hope , on instagram they posted about “only being intermission” and while this could be expensive and may take time due to events that have made it almost impossible to come back from there is hope ,although all we can do is wait there may still be a chance that one day some theatre out there will “say his name” (pun intended)
It's back! There's shows this April :D
Will you be making a new video with updated information on this? I was definitely expecting a happy ending since I know one did happen and was surprised until I realized this video came out 3 years ago. It was especially awesome seeing all the fanart be put into the design (black stripes) of the marquee outside the entrance to the Marriott Marquis.
Back in March 2020, a friend and i were planning to see Hadestown and Beetlejuice...now September 2022 we are finally seeing them. I can't wait to finally see Beetlejuice
Me: "I'm so lazy right now, I don't want to get out of bed."
*new what went wrong video drops
Me: "AWAKEN MY MASTERS!"
CanterlotCrusader 😂😂😂 literally my morning today
Whammu!
If it sky rocketed from tik tok Presley is the one y'all should be thanking
It’s weird watching this video after watching the show a few weeks back. It’s like peering into an alternate word.
And now Alex Brightman voices Fizarolli in Helluva Boss! And in the works of Season 2!
Fizzarolli truly embodies the Alex Brightman Beetlejuice so it’s nice seeing him in a more accessible platform such as the show 😭
As an Aussie, I was so glad that Eddie got to compose for my favourite musical. Yes I know it’s a far stretch, but I also loved the movie.
Guess who had a Beetlejuice ticket scheduled for June 🙃. But in all seriousness though, this was great! Keep it up!
Aw I’m so sorry!
Potato GG It’s alright! Hopefully they do go on tour so I still get to see the show.
I fell in love with Beetlejuice a month ago. I've listened to a handful of musicals but this was one of the first ones I truly fell in love with. Watching this made me sad, happy, proud, but in general, just appreciate their journey, and everything that went into it so much more. Thank you for making this video.
Critics: this music sucks
Everyone else: we LOVE Beetlejuice!!
Critics are incompetent narcissists
