As an American I have never seen or heard of Drammen. Today I am very interested in learning about some of the best things in the Norwegian city of Drammen. If you enjoyed the video feel free to leave a comment, like, or subscribe for more!
I think the Drammen Theatre should be on the list, as it is one of the finest in Norway. Instead they used several slots on different estates. Drammen is the biggest cargo port in Norway. And they have World cup cross country races in the streets in the winter.
Woooo. I live in Drammen. There is a lot of other stuff here to, but a good start. The names was mispronounced in the video you are reacting to, but Norwegian is a hard language to pronounce if you’re speaking English. We have a lot of good food places, cafes, bars, restaurants etc. and you have some nice parks, hiking trails and a walking path that stretches around the river/fjord. Gulskogen gård had live peacocks walking around in the garden I the summer. And from around the month of May, you can walk around in the beautiful garden. There is a lot of hidden gems around this city and had some bad reputation in the 80’s and 90’s, but has worked a lot on how it looks.
There are also a lot of places of interest within an hours drive from Drammen, like Fossesholm herregård, Nøstetangen glassverk museum, Blåfargeverket and Krøderbanen museum railway
Can't believe I've been following you for a year and then you just casually drop a video on my small town where I've lived for 15 years now :D Drammen has an unfortunate reputation in Norway, but it is wholly undeserved. It's a fantastic place to raise kids and enjoy life with your family.
How they forgot to mention GN in the video is sad though 😅
As a Western Norwegian I've only been to Drammen maybe five plus times in my life, but it's a very nice place, in my experience. If you visit Norway it's very often Oslo - then train to Bergen and then off to see the reindeers and post at Insta to show that you were at or above the Artic circle. Perhaps sometimes stopping at Trondheim along the way. Which is also a great place, btw, don't get me wrong, I've lived there :)
I live in Vestfossen, close to Drammen. My wife work at Drammens Museum (that includes Gulskogen Gård, Austad Gård, Spiraltoppen), she has worked there for over 30 years, and will work there 30 more I guess 😂.
The pronounciation is literally killing me.
Relax, the pronounciation is a dialect from the planet Mars!
@@wiggofarberg1081😂
They're butchering every name 😵
Oh gyahd! It was so bad!
The source video should had done a better job to try to pronounce it correctly, it was a nightmare to listen to. Why do they have to try to americanize every name ☹
Thanks, Tyler, for giving Drammen these kind words. You are absolutely right, the city has more to offer than what was shown here.
As another comment mentioned, in 2025 a lot of changes and improvements will be done, with a new main bridge, renovated and improved train station, and a new, hyper modern regional hospital.
A fun fact about Drammen is that most timber that Amsterdam is built upon is from the Drammen region and ported from the Drammen harbor a long time ago.
Drammen was the most important harbor on this side of the country, Bergen on "the other side of the mountains."
Some years ago. Drammen was a sad industrial town we only drove through to get further south. Now Drammen has become a pleasant city, with good opportunities to cycle safely and discover both sides of the city.
( ---you did - unless you knew better 😉)
Im coming from Drammen and have been one the spiralen meany times. And Drammen is close to my heart ❤ My favorite fotball team coming from Drammen call S.i.f. I also vent to a rock consert in Drammenshallen to watch Bon Jovi.
I grew up in Drammen and still have a fair bit of family there. Drammen Theatre is definitely worth a visit. There are also plenty of hiking terrain around, and some lakes that are good for swimming in the hills.
You can drive all the way to Landfalltjern (Land fall lake), or you could drive to Spiralen, hike though the outdoor museum up to the same lake, and go for a swim, before hiking back.
All the Norwegian cities has a history of burning down or partly destroyed by fire. Pretty many of them was also totally destroyed during WW2.
"Many" is pushing it. I believe there were 7 Norwegian cities that were bombed during WW2.
??
I know a lot of cities have burned down at some point in time due to the prevalence of wooden buildings and no building codes for most of history, but I know of only 1 or 2 up north that were destroyed due to WW2.
@@Contentious_Point_
OK! Many cities and towns in Norway were affected by World War II, both through bombings and the scorched earth tactics employed by the retreating German forces. Here is a list of the most significant examples:
It should be noted that the bombings often caused fires, which were at least as destructive as the bombs themselves.
Cities Destroyed by Bombing:
Oslo, Kristiansand, Stavanger, Bergen, Trondheim, Bodø, Narvik, Åndalsnes, Molde, and Namsos.
Cities Destroyed by Scorched Earth Tactics:
Kirkenes, Vadsø, Vardø, Hammerfest, Alta, and Tromsø.
@@oh515 where are you getting this info?
Stavanger certainly was never actually bombed, although there were rules regarding curtains(limiting light) etc.
there was one plane shot down which crashed into an empty school, but that's it...
@@Contentious_Point_
Sola is part of Stavanger city today, and Åndalsnes wasn’t even a city back then, but it’s a city today. It was a town, but was bombed what so ever. How Asperger’s do you need the answer to be. This is fukin YT. And if Stavanger is the only answer you find false, why the hęļļ do you waste our time by arguing? You said you only knew a couple in north, but now you suddenly know everything?
Drammen is built on both sides of Drammenselva (the Drammen river) so there are several bridges, some for car traffic and some just for pedestrians/bikers. You have Bragernes on one side (with Bragernes Torg as mentioned in the video) and Strømsø Torg on the other side of the river (where you find the railroad station).
Fun fact about Drammensbadet, it was made to be able to hold national and international competitions in swimming, but the designers/architects did not take in to the account that the competition swimmers needs some sort of plate to signal that they go all the way to the end of the pool before turning, sothey made the pool just a few inches too short to facilitate this. But I belive it is a quite popular place for average people to go and swim.
Earlier known as Norways biggest road crossing 😂.
But now its a nice city 😊
Hi Taylor! I really agree with you that you got to see far too little of our city, yes I live in this city. I have lived in Drammen since 1982, and I can tell you that Drammen is a former industrial city, which emphasized timber, paper production and boat workshops. When I moved here, the river that runs through the town was black and dirty, and smelled bad. Otherwise, the city was not much better, there were many tired buildings that had not been taken care of. So in the mid-1980s it was decided that both the city and the river should be cleaned, and there would be major changes. At the time, many companies had struggled with the sale and delivery of paper abroad, so several had closed down.
Then new buildings started coming up, and major changes took place in several places in the city, which today appears as a modern student town, which is spacious and you can easily get around the city by bike or just walking.
These days, Drammen is renewing the city bridge, which will be completed in the autumn of 2025. Besides the fact that the city has become healthier, the river is today the top six salmon river in Norway. Drammen is the sixth largest city in Norway, with its approximately 100,000 inhabitants, the city has today a modern industry, and today has several top schools at student level.
The city has had major challenges in the last 40 years, but today appears as a little pearl south-west of Oslo.
Has had many nicknames, such as a "harry city", "Det store hølet on E18" because the E 18 towards the south passes the city over the largest bridge which is right at the outlet of the Drammen river.
Would recommend watching this film as well, you'll see a lot more of the cityruclips.net/video/wSInDRU1tfU/видео.html&ab_channel=DagHenningIngebretsen
Drammen is my city and I love it
Fun fact: In Norwegian, the word 'en dram' means 'a drink' and 'drammen' means 'the drink'.
From this, we have a funny expression:
"Det er bedre med en dram i timen enn en time i Drammen,"
which means "It's better to have a drink every hour than to spend an hour in Drammen."
Completely wrong. Drammen comes from the earlier name of Drammenselva, all the way back in the 1000s the river was called Drafn, hence the name.
@@janerikrolstad4506 Haha, learn to read.
I did not say that the word 'dram' has anything to do with the origin of the name of the city.
I pointed out that the definite form of the word 'dram' is written the same as the city name.
Example:
"Jeg skulle ikke tatt den siste drammen."
Meaning: I should not have taken that last drink.
"En Dram" refers specifically to liquor. A Dram is a unit of measure - often used for medicine. Hence a Dram is very often used for Aquavit.
Thus it doesn't mean "a drink" - but specifically a small glass of hard liquor.
@@TheAurgelmir, that's true. I should have specified that.
I live in Oslo, been to drammen twice, always a great view, typical cozy looking city of Norway :), yes.
The english author Desmong Bagley describe a carhunt in this tunnel Spiealen. Its also a film.
Apparently a bunch of places in the U.s is named Drammen as well
Can you make a video about norwigan fairytales/folktales or a video about norse mythology pls😃
There's a suggestion form linked in the vid's dooblydoo.
Thanks:)
Drammen have river & fjord! From spiralen you can see Drammen river! Drammen is 7 biggest city in Norway! Gård is farm in Norwegian language!
Try and look up Skien Telemark next 😁😁✌️
I live in one of the oldest city in Norway.
Sarpsborg from 1016.
Trondheim year 997 😁❤
From Drammen to Oslo is 25 miles.
I lived in Drammen for 10 years (moved to another town now) Drammen is just a short trip from Oslo. One of the best things to do is to rent a car and drive to the spiral (spiralen) and see if you can drive through the entire spiral without adjusting the agle of your steeringwheel. They say that it was a good way to see if the front wheels were ajuted correctly back in the old days. And once you get to the top there are beautiful terrain where you can take a hike before you drive back down.
There are som other videos of Drammen on yt where you can see more of my hometown.
My home town 😊
drammens hallen was used by many of the biggest bands of all time werid that its not on the list
and close to Oslo
Hey I grew up here😅
Haha the computer voice reading all the names in Drammen is American. It's not even close to how you would say it. I had to read what it was trying to say to understand. 🤧😅
Tyler when will you react to the series "vikings"? ;)
Siden han ikke leser kommentarer må du sikkert vente lenge. Men han har et skjema for ønsker i informasjonsfeltet. Andre har tidligere kommentert at de har betalt ham for at han skulle bruke deres ønsker.
She did a terrible pronunciation!
Because the voice is AI
In drammen they have aas bryggeri
Yey. I am from Drammen 😁
AI is absolutely butchering the pronounciation of the names!😂
Btw, you should definetly check out the city of Kongsberg and its history!👍 The silver mines are fantastic, and more than 400 years old!
my home town no and for ever
Btw the video has an automated voice, so she pronounces everything wrong. Spiralen means Spiral in English.
They did not include the coolest thing to do in Drammen, visiting Drammen Racing Senter!
Bragernes Torg = Bragernes square
Ppl are upset about the butchering of norwegian names. This is an AI reading the text. It’s not a person. AI is still in the early stages. And yes, it is shit.
Hiw didvthey forget GN? 😅
I am from Drammen. It used to be a great place to live in the 80s and 90s. It was easy to get around in your car and we all enjoyed free parking in the streets. Several bars and discos. Now its a closed boring city, few places to go and have fun, 40 boring restaurants, we that live there dont use so much. We prefer to go to shopping centres in the outskirts. Thats where we meet, eat and shop. Drammen looks good on a you tube video, but dont waste a minute here unless old pointless building are your thing. The good fun Drammen of the 80s and 90s didnt look so good on postcard# or RUclips. But it used to be great outgoing culture of people in the 80s and 90s. Btw the ypsilon bridge is not in the city Center and doesnt bring you «anywhere». In the city they have removed a big productive bridge for cars and people to build another walking pointless bridge that forces people to drive 3 times the distanse to cross the river. In Drammen young people used to hang out with their cars and motorcycles. The politicians closed all the roads and Centre outdoors parking. The city just died. The only remaining great thing about living in Drammen is that the people here went into the streets to stop the politicians trying to put a toll ring around the city. We stoppet the prison from being built! The problem with this win by the people is that the politicians are taking revenge by deliberately down-sizing roads and street-parking. Politicians says: «no roads without toll stations». Next elections the war about toll ring probably will light up once again.. Dont move here😅
1: Leave.
lol historically Drammen city was never seen as a pretty or desirable place to live. Former industrial city it was also seen as poor and ghetto due to its rural location. I have family living there and let’s say I never visit them🤣🤣🤣
This has to be AI "talk over", cause "she" is saying every attraction name soooo wrong it hurts, haha
To Be Hnest this video should end the after 3 seconds (Every Norwegian hates Drammen)
Best things to do in drammen
1. Leave
Oh man, the pronunciations of the place names are horrible. Like not at all close to correct...
no way dude that city is not awesome xD no norwegian thinks that city is awesome either without weird people xD
First

This guy is speaking so slowly I think that he thinks his viewers are mentally deficient.
drammen suger
The sole positive:
Every single person watching feels smarter than Tyler.
(As if he "knows much" about American cities.)
Ok, Fiona Harvey.
The pronunciation is just crazy. It isn't even close
"I was born in a hole in the E18 highway, that hole has later become known as Drammen." -Herodes Falsk. It was among the least favored towns in all of Norway until just a couple decades ago, and really had to do quite a lot to get rid of the old industrial (only) town image (and reality). Still wouldn't call it a "great town" yet...
Was known as the biggest road crossing in Norway when I grew up 😅
My fathers uncle used to say «En dram i timen er bedre enn en time i Drammen» «One dram per hour is better then a hour in Drammen»
AI videos can’t pronounce foreign words or city names. I had to look at the screen to get the names😅. Drammen is fairly easy straight forward to say, but many others were very off.
A somewhat hidden gem in Drammen is Risdalstårnet. After a beautiful hike through the forest you arrive at a 10 meter high tower. From the top which stand at about 340 meter above sealevel you can see 106 mountain peaks (on a good day) and all the way to Oslo. Another beautiful lookout tower is Nordbykollen tower which offers stunning view over Drammen and the fjord.
Thanks for the tip. I hiked to Risdalstårnet today based on your comment. Great views :)
Drammen is the warmest city in Norway. ..
Drammen is my home town, i live not far from the spiralen
The video narrator is terrible, I'm Norwegian
Born in Drammen 61years ago make the first page of Drammens Tidning, Buskeruds Blad, with a picture of me new born and 3 generations of my female relatives on my fathers side. I do not remember we ever go to the Spiral, but I remember we used to cross the bridge to get to the city center. I also remember standing out side the train station where my father worked watching the steam engines haul the wagons. As I moved to Asker at 6 years old I am sad to say i do not know much about Drammen, but what I can say is that I used to go to the stores at Runtom (roundabout, the first rund about in Norway) and to Mr. Ask´s store just a cross the street from where we lived at Verven 18...
If I am not mistaken, this tunnel (Spiralen) was made buy the the Germans during the WWII, and there is actualy kanon foundations and bunkers remaining at the top to this day. It was buildt to protect the city from invation from the enemies of the germans.
Spiralen was made in the 50s, oficially opened in 61. They needed gravel to build roads and instead of making an ugly open quarry the decided to excavate a tunnel that woule be less of an eyesore. And it also became an attraction. I has nothing to do with WW2. There is an old road up to the fort on the top, but i think it predates the german invasion.
"All of our bridges are for cars."
Wrong, as usual.
The bridge is even for cats,Norwegian ones.
