Thanks for the update,I really appreciate it.I bought a bush axe to clear some of my property, because my brush cutter wasn't working. The blade snapped in half after using it for about a year.I had my receipt, and the big box store took it back, because the company said they never heard of the blade snapping in half.I got a brand new one,and after 6 months using it,that blade snapped in half.I took it back, had receipt, but had a little trouble with cashier, but I got my money back.I never bought another one.The problem is they are making the blades thinner.I found 2 old bush axes that my dad bought in the 70s and put new handles on them,no more breaking blades. They don't make stuff like they used to.You told me you didn't know what work was.You are a hard working man,and of course you bought a hose reel.
The blades from the busted ones might make good knives. They are high carbon steel that can be heat treated to take the brittle out of them. I buy old tools that are in good shape just because I'm so familiar with the crap that comes from overseas.
BCtruck, rebuild, repair, repurpose I had to hand over the broken ones.I think they sent them back to the company. They were Tru Tough Bush Axes. The company was surpised that one snapped in half, let alone 2 of them.If I had them, and you would accept them,I would have sent them no cost, because it would have been really cool to see you make a knife out of something I once owned.I need to learn some of your skills, because, there is not enough repurposing going on in my life.
First thing I would do is sharpen the splitter wedge. Most of them are too dull to get the piece to start separating so it can't go thru. A longer, narrow wedge added to the front of the existing wedge would work much better. It takes less power to split with a narrower wedge so once it's starting to split, then you widen the back of it to help separate the log. A table just behind the wedge would be a nice idea also so the pieces wouldn't always fall to the ground (or on your foot)
I though my 6 ton Powersmart was trashy to. but its gold compare to that thing! I really like it now! Since i made it hands free. Its all operated by the foot peddle! All i did was loop a rope from the lever >Tide on the lever, and down to a wooden foot peddle. Back up to the button. What i did was loose the box up and slip a long hinge down the side of the box. Tighten it back up. For the rope to pull down on the hinge on the button! Press the peddle pull down the hinge on the button and lever at the same time. Way i rig up the foot peddle was> used wooden piece1x4x12" 2 hole thread bailing wire to make a loop for the rope to run in. On the heal of the peddle, i put a long dry wood screw to hold it in place down into the ground. Made it where the peddle is 6" from the ground where the rope feeds from> IT WORKS SWEET 👍👍
Just got an earthquake,I hope it keeps going,iv been splitting a bunch of maple, and walnut, seems to work good, now I'm wondering how long it will last ,thanks.
BCtruck, rebuild, repair, repurpose I did. I have to admit I was getting burnt out and could no longer keep up with what I was uploading, basically I got sloppy with the channel. This new channel will be more on a personal level if I ever get to uploading videos. For the moment I am just enjoying catching up with good folks that I have neglected watching. Thanks for asking Brad and keep up the great work. jman
Glad to see you got the one that stays on all the time. Its really similar to harbor freights electric log splitter. I don't like having to hold down the button and press the lever on my splitter. Someday I'll get harbor freights. Great video.
Also, make sure the wire is of adequate size. Even if the circuit is rated at 20 amps and it's on #12 wire,if it is any distance from the source, voltage drop will reduce it effectiveness. Upsize the wire to #10. That can help. Yes,I'm an electrician. Also, NEVER put an oversized breaker on a wire. It will turn into a heating element and cause a fire and the breaker will not trip. Never put a 30 amp breaker on a #12 wire.
Don't you just hate when that happens and can't find a your receipt! That happened to me just a couple weeks ago.The motor went out in my furnace and repairman said it would be $300.00 dollars for a new motor...I said sorry, can't right now. So I went to buy one of those heaters that is suppose to save you money cause it was suppose to be around 0' and my daughter needed something for her room. Dang thing quit after 2 weeks and I took it back, found it on my rewards card. Went somewhere else and got a different brand. TC and God Bless!
I worked for a company that made water well pumps back in the 1970's. we would get US made electric motors by the semi truck loads. The first thing that we would do before installing the electric motors on the pumps was to load test each electric motor. I would say about 5% of the motors would now pass this test. we would send them back.
Since I did this video,I've discovered something else. When it wont immediately go through a piece of wood, you hold the lever and it goes into low gear and sloooooooowly splits the wood. I didnt discover that till I was halfway through what I needed to split.
Very nice machine. You may have done this already, but I would remove that 40amp and put the 20amp breaker back in; most wall outlets are rated at 15amp. This will protect the wires in the walls from melting and ultimately the save the building.
you talked about changing a breaker to 40 amps. not a good idea. if wire is rated for 20 amps and you put a 40 amp breaker, the breaker wont pop and possibly causing the wire to overheat and cause a fire. NEVER put a higher amp breaker on incorrect wire gauge.
I think you may have gotten a lemon Earthquake. I have had my Earthquake since last November and it has been great. I purchased it from Tractor Supply basically because one of my neighbors had one and loved it. So far I have split about 3 cords, mostly oak. Today I started splitting green oak with it and it goes through it like butter. Biggest I have split is 14 inches and while it took some effort the Earthquake split it. In any case good luck with your new splitter.
I wonder about the lifetime of the motor. From observation they do not seem to be designed to be run continously for long periods of time. The earthquake and the speeco are basically the same machine.
JIMMY TATE The speeco has a bigger motor and it worked far far better than the earthquake did. Plus, its a one hand operation where the earthquake required two hands operate the ram.
I have noticed that most electric models have the holder moving and the wedge being stationary, and my gasoline model has a moving wedge with a stationary holder. I wonder if there is any reason for this...
Electric motors generate rotational motion by design. Internal combustion engines transfer a linear motion to a rotation via the crankshaft. Internal combustion engines, are by design, less efficient, and have zero torque at startup.
That is the same exact chinese log splitter that harbor Freight sells for $299.00 !!! The Earthquake comes with a no questions asked 5 YEAR warranty. The Speeco does not.
Brad, I'd suggest adding the name speeco 5 ton or something like that to the description or tags so that people on youtube can find your video and see your review of this splitter.
Stop trying to split them big ones down the middle at first, off set and take off pieces and this little feller will spit anything that way. Been using mine for 3 years like that and aint found a piece of wood yet it wouldn't split. Largest diameter so far was 25"
Speeco and Earthquake are both Chinese made, both generate the same HP, I think you got a lemon with the Earthquake. With big logs you have to cut off the sides and work your way around, the core is the most dense part.
William Wisenheimer actually, I've hurt my back for the last time. (Fell off a ladder) I'm getting rid of my stove and splitter. Can't carry the wood anymore.
Beware the Honda GC Motor I bought a TSC log splitter about 3 years ago . It did what I needed . Then about 2 years into it I could not pull it the compression release failed . Ok not happy Honda motor I expected years of service with no problems based on reports of how good their small engines are . That is why I paid more for the honda GC over the Briggs / Kohler models for sale . I had to replace the timing - cam compression gear . Ok 15 bucks .. bad luck on my part . THEN I STARTED RESEARCHING and I called Honda and got a distributor in CO . He grew up on the farm so he understood the frustration . The model I had 190CC GC DOES NOT have a steel sleeve in the cylinder . It is a bored aluminum cast . Life rating about 200 to 250 HRS . He asked me about how many I thought I have on it was about that he said you got what you paid for . As I noticed it was starting to bog down on knots . WHAT !!!! I was not happy . He went on to tell me hey that is what Honda get's asked for per the price point the seller wants . He said the GSV has the steel sleeve . I paid extra for a cheaper motor . When you buy a wood splitter CHECK THE TYPE OF MOTOR . In retrospect I wonder if the Briggs or Kohler cheaper models would have had the steel sleeve . Maybe yes maybe no . RESEARCH the model of Motor . I was angry at Honda . A buddy engineer told me . Don't blame Honda . They are just giving the buyer ( TSC ) the product in a price range that they want to sell . So I lost 2 ways . Spent more for Honda motor . Then had to replace it with a briggs off the rototiller . Everything else on the unit is working fine . Do your research . BEWARE . They don't cheat you . They just don't sell you what is good . Thanks Duncan Adams
Earthquake: Yeah but, yeah but, the only reason that other splitter could split that log was because our unit loosened it for them ... and, and, and .... you can't get your hand caught while operating our unit. LOL
That sounds almost exactly like the conversation I had with them when trying to trouble shoot the unit. They kept insisting it was my house current that wasn't high enough. I told them that I ran a welder off the same outlet with no problems.
Nope, because if I don't tell him when to sell, he'll lose everything! Hey, I just posted a video of Daniel on one of your FB pages. (Its way older than three years old.) We have the smaller version of this splitter.
You started talking about a splitter and then go to chickens..... come on man stay on track...So what the chickens needed water you should have gotten the water for them...LOL
There is really no excuse for exceeding the manufactures recommended maximum operating specs. and blaming the unit for failure to perform up to your requirements. Buy the right size equipment in the first place or you just come off as a ???
You are a hard worker! I need to borrow you for a day and bring splitter!!!!

It cracks me up the way those logs shoot from the machine. I hope this one works out better for you.
Just got an earthquake,I hope it keeps going,iv been splitting a bunch of maple, and walnut, seems to work good, now I'm wondering how long it will last ,thanks.
can't you get an adapter for your hose stepup / stepdown to the size you require instaed of buyiing more hose.
Good luck with the new new splitter, looks like a nice little work horse.
jman
Jman. did you get popped again?
BCtruck, rebuild, repair, repurpose I did. I have to admit I was getting burnt out and could no longer keep up with what I was uploading, basically I got sloppy with the channel. Glad to see you got the one that stays on all the time. Its really similar to harbor freights electric log splitter. I don't like having to hold down the button and press the lever on my splitter. Someday I'll get harbor freights. Great video.
I'm very happy with thus. The need for both hands to activate the other was a bit silly.
BCtruck, rebuild, repair,repurpose great! agreed.
***** On my homelite log splitter when it turns off the ram retracts and if its on the ram won't retract.
***** oh ok.
***** That would help. Its a pain having to use both hands.
Also, make sure the wire is of adequate size. Even if the circuit is rated at 20 amps and it's on #12 wire,if it is any distance from the source, voltage drop will reduce it effectiveness. I brought this back and bought an earthquake and it worked much better.
SpeeCo has good stuff. They are a three point parts company along with a few different small farm implements and log splitters.
Looks like a good unit! Nice and quite, me likes that a lot
Quiet is a big plus for me.
Don't you just hate when that happens and can't find a your receipt! That happened to me just a couple weeks ago.The motor went out in my furnace and repairman said it would be $300.00 dollars for a new motor...I said sorry, can't right now. I really need to do better at saving my receipts.
I found mine after I got back home, lol!

so glad i invested the money in a good splitter. I have a 27 Ton splitter that would't look twice at that small of a piece of wood
uhhhhh,,,,,Im very happy for you both?
was that about a half chord?
Yep.
Nice splitter! Have used several of those hose reals. They are handy!
I can't believe I havent used one before.
Very nice machine. You may have done this already, but I would remove that 40amp and put the 20amp breaker back in; most wall outlets are rated at 15amp. This will protect the wires in the walls from melting and ultimately the save the building.
Done!
Well done ..... !!!
I like the spring loading attachment you got to throw the logs out once you had cut them ..... ROFL! :)
Yeah that spring loaded attachment will take an arm off if your not careful.
you talked about changing a breaker to 40 amps. not a good idea. if wire is rated for 20 amps and you put a 40 amp breaker, the breaker wont pop and possibly causing the wire to overheat and cause a fire. NEVER put a higher amp breaker on incorrect wire gauge.
Thinking maybe you had a bad unit from the start, I am glad TS helped you out.
Yeah with no receipt they were under no obligation to take my word that I even bought it there.
Update. I have split over 20 cords with my Earthquake 5 ton. Never a problem.
2 button operation is required for all industrial presses. Be careful where your extra hand is while pressing
when i bought a log splitter i was told to get 7 ton as 5 ton are really not powerful and i,m happy with mine a 7 ton scheppell from germany
Nice rig.
Thank goodness that I didn't go buy it. I appreciate the update FOR SURE. TY.
Glad I could save you the headache.
BCtruck, rebuild, repair, repurpose Glad that you showed me a better OPTION. Thanks Much BC. :-)
How much does that Speeco log splitter run about to buy one?
299.00
At least it's not 300 bucks. :P
***** That would be a ridiculous and unreasonable price!!
Hey BC, where did you get that hose reel?
Tractor supply. 30 bucks.
BCtruck, rebuild, repair,repurpose Thanks!!
I have noticed that most electric models have the holder moving and the wedge being stationary, and my gasoline model has a moving wedge with a stationary holder. I wonder if there is any reason for this...
I’ve had an Earthquake for six years or more does the job never had an issue. I quess you had a bad one.
Could be, or maybe you had the good one.
Question, What compels a man to sit and watch someone split wood.... I don't know but I just did. And enjoyed it....lol
I coujd watch other people work for hours!!!
I have watched people split wood for hours on you tube. Probably the reason it made me go and build my own. Glad this splitter works better.
Mesmerising ..... Same with bush hogging ....... :)
Seems the "Earth Quake" was more of a tremor in comparison to this one, works great! !
It's way more machine than the other.
Nesecito uno de esos porfavor
I maybe weird but an electric splitter doesnt make much sense to me.
What's your beef with electricity?
Electric motors generate rotational motion by design. Internal combustion engines transfer a linear motion to a rotation via the crankshaft. Internal combustion engines, are by design, less efficient, and have zero torque at startup.
looks like fun!
It was a lot more fun than the maul and sledge hammer.
That is the same exact chinese log splitter that harbor Freight sells for $299.00 !!! The Earthquake comes with a no questions asked 5 YEAR warranty. The Speeco does not.
Hey man how much was this splitter? I am looking for one for occasional use and this looks like it would fit the bill.
Thanks
$299.00
BCtruck, rebuild, repair, repurpose thanks again. Now just to convince the wife!
Brad, I'd suggest adding the name speeco 5 ton or something like that to the description or tags so that people on youtube can find your video and see your review of this splitter.
Good idea.

Loud and inefficient - wouldn't trade my 10 TON hydraulic for this loud piece of trash any day.
I have one the same as yours and I am very happy with it also 🤓🇬🇧
Speeco and Earthquake are both Chinese made, both generate the same HP, I think you got a lemon with the Earthquake. With big logs you have to cut off the sides and work your way around, the core is the most dense part.
William Wisenheimer I've split at least two cords with the speedo. Chinese or not, the speeco is twice the machine the earthquake was.
Two cords, wow! You should be a Speeco salesman.
William Wisenheimer actually, I've hurt my back for the last time. (Fell off a ladder) I'm getting rid of my stove and splitter. Can't carry the wood anymore.
It looks good B.C. happy splitting.
awesome that dude works twice as fast as mine!
oh and nice job on the pipe gun too man, how is yours holding up
If your asking about the splitter,it's holding up real well. The pipe gun was disassembled and used for other projects.
ok, thanks! appreciate your time and videos!
Bet that new splitter would do a real job on a big slab of bacon!!
I would have to bring the splutter in the house. I would never be outside with a slab of bacon. My neighbors would come over and "want to help ".
Hey I had s freand who bought a all train vehicle he had to replace it

Loud and inefficient - wouldn't trade my 10 TON hydraulic for this loud piece of trash any day.
Well, now there's footage of you doing what you were advised not to do - splitting a 14" log over a 9" one. Best not bust this one!
Go home Karen, your drunk.
Earthquake: Yeah but, yeah but, the only reason that other splitter could split that log was because our unit loosened it for them ... and, and, and .... you can't get your hand caught while operating our unit. LOL

2 hp do you know? nice one.
looks like my HF 5 ton unit
it is a hf unit
punky oak then.
I've got the smaller version of this, and its an amazing little machine.
JimsEquipmentShed Jim, you’re watching a 3 year old video!! Could you please tell 3 years younger Brad to buy bitcoin?
Nope, because if I don't tell him when to sell, he'll lose everything! Hey, I just posted a video of Daniel on one of your FB pages. (Its way older than three years old.) We have the smaller version of this splitter.

thats rotten maple no?

I think everyone who reads this will know who the clown is between us,especially after they find out that you thumbed up your own comment.
U be better witha 3 star splitter
Sounds like the EarthQuake is a dud..
My Earthquake works great! No complaints here.
missed spelled Speeco.sorry bad pun
OH CRAP! Nooooo!
Oh nooooooo!!!! I'm so sorry! Maybe it will work for you. It was the breaker on the machine that kept kicking.
Hey, no problem. I was just about to get one when I read your other review. Thank god I waited.
A OK
Loud and inefficient - wouldn't trade my 10 TON hydraulic for this loud piece any day.
alllllllllllllllllllllrighty then!
