    100% agreed on the MIDI out. It would be crazy with 4 midi tracks

    I think the device is built for a very specific purpose, and a lot of these things are limited on purpose to keep it simple. personally, I like that it’s this way! it doesn’t try to be an everything-device. it lets you write ideas with presets, and then move on to Live to tweak and perfect it

    • @johnpaultumsun
      @johnpaultumsun  3 месяца назад +1

      I agree with you 100% I definitely appreciate the Move's limitations both from a creative and practicality perspective. I purchased the Move based entirely on what it is capable of now, at launch, so any future firmware improvements would just be icing on the cake. But I also think all products can improve over time based on user feedback and real world use, so just hoping that Ableton is listening - lots of other great videos and forums out there with ideas for this device!

    8:28 THANK YOU! I've watched tons of tutorials, reviews, and demos, but I hadn't seen anyone mention how to trim the beginning of the capture loop. This is awesome, I had the same issue and the step sequencer is easy enough to use, just not obvious that it was an option!

    • @johnpaultumsun
      @johnpaultumsun  3 месяца назад +2

      Absolutely, happy to help - I think this is actually such a powerful feature, I can't believe I haven't heard about it more elsewhere. It can be very interesting to move around the loop points on a clip to get new and unexpected ideas, or even to almost "nest" multiple micro loops inside of a clip during a performance.

    When in a drum rack, holding ... (Shift) changes encoder 5 from Decay to Length %. This is better than the time-based Hold option for setting the sample end, particularly when you repitch samples.

    • @johnpaultumsun
      @johnpaultumsun  3 месяца назад

      Hey thanks for the reply, this is interesting, I had missed that! I'm curious, what makes this work better for setting the duration of repitched samples as compared to Hold? Does Hold stay locked to an amount of time, even if you compress or expand a sample length by pitching it up or down?

    I think from a product design perspective this device was never meant to cater to performance. If you approach it from that angle the feature set fits the bill adequately but definitely can be improved. For me sidechain is something I am sorely missing from this musical sketchpad tool. Sidechain is sometimes that missing ingredient that gets my creative juices flowing.

    • @minimal3734
      @minimal3734 3 месяца назад +1

      Sidechain would be nice. Like the Novation Circuit, which is often compared to the Move. But I wonder if this would break the one-to-one transferability to Ableton Live.

    • @johnpaultumsun
      @johnpaultumsun  3 месяца назад +2

      You're totally right, Ableton is marketing this as a sketchpad and I think they're right to do so. I should have been more clear in the video - when I say performance, I don't necessarily mean being up on stage in front of people. What I meant was more about having performance tools so that I could play/perform on the Move, like an instrument. Sidechain compression is actually a really good example - it's a mixing tool so maybe that's why it was left out, but creatively it can help find new sounds and ideas. And the same same would go for other FX and UI tweaks - a master DJ filter, glitchy step repeats, dub delay, volume and panning tools - these would all help users sketch out new musical ideas.

    I'm okay with 4 instrument tracks. What would be great is to add 4 MIDI-only sequencer tracks for external gear (or off-device software instruments). The CPU and memory requirements for adding MIDI sequencers is minimal. While we're at it, don't forget parameter recording for these tracks.

    I have a short wishlist for now:
    Tap Tempo
    Chord Mode
    Set Chaining
    More arps
    I feel like all of those things can be implemented with a firmware update.

    • @johnpaultumsun
      @johnpaultumsun  3 месяца назад

      Chord modes could definitely be cool - until they add it, you could play around with resampling chords, though that switches the device from a synth to a sample engine, and that would change what could be edited. Maybe tap tempo will be added, and that's why it has its own menu! Set chaining (or even just quantized set launching!) would be great. And yes, more options for the arp would definitely be appreciated.

    Thanks for the walkthrough. I think a better use for the bottom buttons in session view would to also chain a set of track chains (Circuit style). Along with your suggestion of chaining patterns, adding more midi channel outputs and adding a master performance filter, I would probably then let go of my Circuits Tracks in favour of the Move.

      I have an Analog Four and used to have an Analog Rytm, but I've never played with the newer Elektron boxes - I'd love to mess with a Digitakt/Digitone/Syntakt sometime! But for what it's worth, I'm glad the Move has more in common with the Push or even the Circuit Tracks/Rhythm than any of the Elektron boxes. My Analog Four is amazing but I get lost in it sometimes - maybe that's just me!

      @@johnpaultumsun I think you and I are opposites haha. I have all the elektron stuff you don't. Anything outside of the Elektron boxes are out of my league, at least for now. I have the Digitone, Digi 1 and Digi 2. They are the gold standard for me, but I love sound design. I also have Tracks and it's an amazing device, but limited. Then I touched the DT1. And that's when forgot Tracks even existed. I highly, HIGHLY recommend getting into the elektron boxes. Every other groove box is just a toy to me now (although I do have the Move...because I like toys.)

    I think a better use of the Step buttons for your 3rd point is to have them expand how many sessions you can store. At the moment you can only have 32 sessions. They could make the Step buttons into Banks and expand it up to 512 sessions. Maybe that would be too much, but it's potentially possible right?

    • @johnpaultumsun
      @johnpaultumsun  3 месяца назад

      This is also a great idea. I'll admit that I've already forgotten which Session is which, and I only have like 5 or 6 so far! On the Circuit Tracks I had the same problem, I was always forgetting which Packs had which Projects and which Projects were which. But maybe that's just a "me" problem - I'm sure some users will hit up against the 32 session limit!

    pointing out the personal benefits and giving a list of suggestions for improvement, AFTER actually using it. that is how a review should be! i do not understand the hate this piece gets. nothing is perfect and for something working on battery this has a lot of cool stuff in it. the price is not cheap, but perfectly placed in the market. show me another sampler + digital synth + 32 velocity sensitive pads + touch sensitive encoders + audio interface + build in speaker + mic + resampling + battery.... there is none. everything that comes close, is at a similar price or way higher, or imo a worse device.
    btw, it sells like crazy, so the screaming youtubers are not representative for all consumers!

    6:34 Ableton move is pitched as a sketch tool, and many commenters point this out because the video complains, rightly, I believe, that the move lacks controls adequate for performance by design , however, many of my sketches are performances to give an idea of how the current state of the sound design can be modulated over time. I would like to have an arrangement and arrangements have a lot of changing, automated parameters.
    So I do hope that Ableton is listening because the Move is a very capable start, but while I may not put it in a live performance rig, I surely want to see and hear what the sketch can do in that role.
    With all that said, I do plan to try this out as a part of my “mini” set up with my teenage engineering 😮T-X6, a tracker mini And my Elektron Digitone

      I may be biased by past hardware I've had, but I think the speakers in the Move are decent - the speakers in the Volca range and Pocket Operators are way worse. When I got the Circuit Tracks, I initially thought it was good that they had gotten rid of the speaker from the original Circuit, but actually I think a speaker can be really helpful in making it feel more immediate and portable, and for checking issues. So better to have a low-quality speaker than no speaker on the Move, in my mind.

    What I find even more important (for my purposes) than the Midi out, is it isn't possible (as far as I know now after studying the manual and still waiting for my device to arrive) to select on which Midi channel the device is listening. I assume it's the standard 'all' channels, but that would mean that I cannot selsct which device (my MiniFreak or Move) I want to control from my Arturia Keylab by simply changing the sending Midi channel on the Keylab.
    In case I got something wrong, please correct me. If I'll find out I was wrong after testing, I'll let you know.

    • @johnpaultumsun
      @johnpaultumsun  3 месяца назад

      Great question, I just tested it out and unfortunately, it seems like every track listens on every MIDI channel. The only thing that determines if MIDI is received by a track is if that track is selected on the Move. So sounds like it wouldn't quite work to have a master controller always connected to the Move and other synths like the MiniFreak you mentioned :(

      @@johnpaultumsun thank you for testing that out! It's a shame that this doesn't work. 😞 I guess I'd be not the only one wanting to controll both the Move and additional instruments with one keyboard. Do you know where I can leave a feature request?

    With the Push standalone being just a beast to carry about, can you transfer projects from the Move to the Push? Or would you need a computer for that? I am trying to justify having one of these things. ;0) Its a crying shame Ableton haven't implemented an 'audio capture' mode on a 20 minute loop, that one feature would make this a must-have.

    • @minimal3734
      @minimal3734 3 месяца назад +3

      True, but at the same time it's a standalone device which is running independently from Ableton. Jamming with the ideas sketched on the go is part of the creative process and where much of the fun is, in my opinion.

    • @johnpaultumsun
      @johnpaultumsun  3 месяца назад

      You're absolutely right, Ableton is selling this as a sketchpad. I should have been more clear in the video - when I say performance, I don't necessarily mean getting up on stage in front of people; I don't do very much of that, though I'm sure some Move users would like to. What I meant was more about having performance tools so that I'd be better able to play/perform on the Move, like an instrument. But I get that not all hardware boxes are set up for that - just hoping Ableton (who have done an excellent job with making the Push feel like an instrument) will consider adding just a few tweaks here and there.

      There is panning per pad in a drum rack - and actually I don't think there is actually individual panning for the tracks. I thought, surely you must be able to pan the tracks, but I actually haven't found a way and the manual seems to indicate that panning is only available inside of a Drum Rack.
