First discovered in the 90s, Rokia Traoré strikes a fine balance between Malian repertoires and Western rhythms. Thanks to her multifaceted identity, the singer and guitarist has developed a rich musical repertoire, blending the jazz of Billie Holiday with neoclassical influences and British rock, as evidenced by her collaborations with English singer Damon Albarn (on the Africa Train tour) and producer John Parish. In this performance at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris in 2020, Traoré delivers a beautiful acoustic set. Surrounded by an outstanding ensemble including Joël Massa Diarra on balafon, Habib Sangaré on bolon (a kind of harp-lute) and Samba Diabaté on guitar, Traoré revisits the Mandingo musical register on the opening night of the Semaine du Son (Week of Sound). Far from the electronic music convulsing the African continent today, this concert showcases a traditional, popular and learned repertoire. The acoustic sound is reinforced by an authentic lyricism, as evidenced by the impeccable compositions “Toubaka” and “Soubalé.” Delicate accompaniment naturally enhances Rokia Traoré's incredible voice. This is particularly true for “Douga,” a masterful track and the finale to this unparalleled performance.
