“Singing for the sake of singing” is such a good way of putting it. It’s a trap that I think a lot of performers fall into with this song... lyrics first. Story first. Every time.
From all those castings, Will Chase, hands down. Him and Lea together, a force to reckon with. The Original production with the Original cast of Lea Salonga and Simon Bowman will go down in history as the one and only Kim and Chris, the best casting of two roles.
I saw Will Chase in the NYC cast back in 1999 when I was about 16 and I will never forget the way he held that penultimate high G on the second to last note of the chorus...it took my breath away, I literally never wanted that note to end.
Ramin is my man so I'll always say he's amazing ! I'd honestly only seen Will Chase and he was very screamy so to hear his version of this was surprising. His range is gorgeous.
Simon Bowman is the best of the best singer in Miss Saigon, and he was amazing playing the role of Chris. Simon and Lea were so perfect together in the original Miss Saigon.
I don't know most anybody here but that version from Jerome Pradon pulled my heartstrings. He seemed did not shout the last word, just resonated it with a steady pitch, strong vibrato and a soft decrescendo...like really lamenting something he sees in his mind and not just shouting it on the sleeping Kim...So melodic.
While Simon expressed sucessfully the confused feeling in Christ's heart and mind, other expressed a feeling too strong that I felt like Christ was so angry and cried out loud. Simon is the best Christ!
Comparison does not imply competition. It would be preferable and more useful to describe the differences and/or similarities among these performances. They are all more than competent.
I really enjoyed seeing Miss Saigon 25th Anniversary Performance at the Cinema and I have got it on DVD and I do enjoy watching it and it's my favourite film
Thank you for making this, it's made my day listening! In real life I saw Niall Sheehy & Alistair Brammer in London and on tour in Manchester I saw Ashley Gilmour. Amazing show!
Will Chase for the win!! Betsy, can you tell me/PM as to where you found such great footage for the clip? I've been searching for a good recording of the Will Chase cast for FOREVER. Thank you for making such an awesome video! :)
I really enjoyed seeing Miss Saigon 25th Anniversary Performance at the Cinema, I have got it on DVD and do enjoy watching it and it's my second favourite filmed and recorded live performance film
Favorites: Simon Bowman, Glyn Kerslake, HE Greer, Peter Lockyer, KEVIN MCINTYRE (YASSS), Mark Reimer, David Shannon, Uwe Kroger (why is he amazing here and weird in POTO?!?!), Shawn Kilpatrick, Will Chase, Niklas Andersson, Michael Xavier, Blake Pullen, Ramin Karimloo, Hong Kwang-Ho, Stephen Mahy, Alistair Brammer
+PhantomifyEponine I wish I could have seen Michael Xavier perform as Chris but I would have been 2 ... but I am now incredibly lucky to train with his company for musical theatre!
Amazing video! Some good stuff here. I wish there was a full version of Patrick Wilson's take of the song, though. I'm sure he was a breathtaking Chris.
Anthony Festa on the current US Tour (2018) blew my socks off in SF! I can't get his version out of my head! If anyone has a copy of his performance, PLEASE send to me.
I loved Will Chase's performance, but, holy cow, Uwe Kröger at 7:45! So many guys struggle with the intonation on that G to F# at the end, but, man Uwe nails it. (Also, did they seriously lower the key a whole step on the West End???)

J Scho he was my Chris as well, loved him. I had the pleasure of working with him after on The Civil War. He was a total sweetheart and super talented.
Alistair Brammer i find has weird vibrato in his voice, everytime i hear him sing sun and moon and why god why, he always sounds to me like that weird tiktok voice effect if you know what i mean
11:50 Jason Mills was reaching the high notes while on a position of the body where it would be impossible for the other men singer-actors. For me that is admirable.
Amazing! Where did you get all this Audios/Videos??? My favourites are Dale Evans, Ramin Karimloo and Lee Mead :) Do you have the full song from Lee? Would love to hear that
Eric Kunze was a replacement on Broadway opposite Lea Salonga. He also performed the role at Broadway Sacramento. He's awesome! ruclips.net/video/evaDDbJtxS8/видео.html
One thing I notice about this song: friggin' flat tones everywhere... EVEN KWANG-HO! He nailed this song in his concert but it was lacking in his performance. Dafuq? ...And Ramin, too...
Best Chris: Simon Bowman, UK original cast (1989) Peter Lockyer, US first national tour (1995) Hottest Chris: Alistair Brammer, UK and Broadway revival (2014 and 2017)
Peter Lockyer, Peter Cousens (who here is mislabeled "Peter Lockyer"; Cousens did the Complete Symphonic Recording), Eric Kunze, Simon Bowman, and Will Chase. Actually, quite a few of them were good; the best ones, I think, were those that hit the high note directly and/or sang it with vibrato. A few of the singers who tried to slide up to "her" or sing it straight, no vibrato, were very flat.
I'm a fan of Hong Kwang Ho as Thuy. I didn't know he also performed as Chris. Oh, I'd love to see the Korean version of Miss Saigon. No need for Eng subs for by this time I'm already very familiar with the English version. Anybody with a link?
Hi Nigel, no. Not yet. I don't live on Sydney and I'm limited financially so I doubt I'll be able to go. I'm not sure our theatres would have as big a stage as I assume you would need.
Betsy Haze I’ve tried to get on to your site but it’s no longer at that address, do you have a new site or a new link please? Would love to check it out 🤗
I notice that the last few Chris sang 'I want my memories as they were' instead of the usual 'I like my memories as they were'. What's up with that? May I ask.
Dee Nagara there were a lot of revised lyrics in the 2014 revival, and subsequent broadway production. Not sure the thinking behind that particular one, but to me it does sound slightly stronger.
In my opinion Simon bowman was the the best Chris ever he was very tender and loving wish I could meet a man like that lolxxx
Most of the people here sounded like they were singing for the sake of singing but
Will Chase sung it so passionately

Simon Bowman in the original recording is the best. Just perfect
I saw Will Chase in the NYC cast back in 1999 when I was about 16 and I will never forget the way he held that penultimate high G on the second to last note of the chorus...it took my breath away, I literally never wanted that note to end.

TroublingTrinny you can watch the entire performance with him on youtube. he’s beautiful really idk how you haven’t heard this version of him
Simon Bowman is the best of the best singer in Miss Saigon, and he was amazing playing the role of Chris. Simon and Lea were so perfect together in the original Miss Saigon.
Search Manila Production of Miss Saigon, Will Chase interpretd it better. Are you an American?
@@ibvghgfvbnbc Yes!
@@smithy2734 oh okay, Will Chase just captured a G.I. perfectly, I like his interpretation

I love Simon Bowman, Ramin Karimloo, Niall Sheehy and Alistair Brammer.
Alistair Brammer from the 2014 London production/revival and the 2016 25th Anniversary Performance film of Miss Saigon
Will Chase!

I really enjoyed seeing Miss Saigon 25th Anniversary Performance at the Cinema and I have got it on DVD and I do enjoy watching it and it's my favourite film
I know that Aaron Tveit *technically* wasn't *actually* ever Chris, but is it fair to say he'd be in the top 5 for almost everyone here?
Id say Jeremy Jordan takes first place, his version makes me cry every time
Still Simon Bowman for me. ❤
My picks are Will Chase (Manila), Ramin Karimloo (UK tour), and Simon Bowman (OG UK).
Simon Bowman is the best!
My favourites were: Will Chase, Charles West, Ramin Karimloo (But in this version he is a bit flat) and Jamai Loman
Simon Bowman 😍😍
Thank you for making this, it's made my day listening! In real life I saw Niall Sheehy & Alistair Brammer in London and on tour in Manchester I saw Ashley Gilmour. Amazing show!
There were many excellent performances of this role. Willy Falk belongs in the top 5. He was wonderful.
Ramin sounds wonderful and that note
Wow. What an amazing compilation!
Simon Bowman and Will Chase for sure
Will Chase for the win!! Betsy, can you tell me/PM as to where you found such great footage for the clip? I've been searching for a good recording of the Will Chase cast for FOREVER. Thank you for making such an awesome video! :)

There is only one really Amazing 'Chris'-The Original-'Simon Bowman!'x
Way too much vibrato
Simon Bowman, Will Chase, Jason Mills, Ramin Karimloo, Hong Kwang Ho
"I like my memoriesas they Were"...I Know the feeling.
Love Simon but Will Chase is my fave ❤
Can't believe I haven't seen more votes for Jason Mills. Most of these sound a touch flat or stained, but he's just beautifully under control.
Great video😄. My faves are peter lockyer , Ramin karimloo and kwang-hong ho.
I saw Peter Lockyer in Les Mis in London, he is extraordinary in everything he does.

I loved Will Chase's performance, but, holy cow, Uwe Kröger at 7:45! So many guys struggle with the intonation on that G to F# at the end, but, man Uwe nails it. (Also, did they seriously lower the key a whole step on the West End???)
Only for certain Chris’. It happens alot in musicals for actors who can sing and act the role but its just too high for them.
Will Chase, hands down ❤️❤️❤️
There’s a different kind of magic between him and Lea 💯
Magic chemistry! Maybe because they are almost the same age.
2:12-John Barrowman? As in Jack Hawkness John Barrowman?

The recording quality and artifacts in some of these recordings make it impossible to compare all of them.
Will Chase is above all the best Chris! Allistar and Simone.
Simon Bowman will always be Chris for me❤
I once heard one who used to sing it as"I lushed my memories as they were"
And have not been able to find him again, god damn he was great
Alistair Brammer is my favourite ! Chris peluso is pretty awesome too !
Alistair Brammer from the 2014 Lomdon production and revival and the 2016 25th Anniversary Performance film of Miss Saigon

That's interesting. He was the Marius (LES MIS) I saw on Broadway in 1992. It was is Broadway debut, and he was only 18.
I saw Matt Bogart but for me Simon is the only one...Jerome Pradon may have had the best last note, however.
Will Chase definitely has that je ne sais quoi that will always make him my favorite but Ramin also slayed it
Simon Bowman, Matt Bogart, Uwe Kroger, Tony Neef, Will Chase,
Simon!!!

Simon Bowman, UK original cast (1989)
Peter Lockyer, US first national tour

Hottest Chris:
Alistair Brammer, UK and Broadway revival (2014 and 2017)
Simon was Jean Valjean to Alistair’s Marius in Les Miserables,so maybe he passed on some useful tips on playing Chris
Alistair Brammer from the 2014 Lomdon production and revival and the 2016 25th Anniversary Performance film of Miss Saigon
My favorite is Hong Kwang-ho!
Out of these gents, I would say Will Chase; however no one sings it as well as Jeremy Jordan!!! The song was made for him.
I saw Richard Carson tonight (current first cover) and he is simply incredible! Do you have a clip of him at all?
Ramin
Peter Lockyer, Peter Cousens (who here is mislabeled "Peter Lockyer"; Cousens did the Complete Symphonic Recording), Eric Kunze, Simon Bowman, and Will Chase. Alistair Brammer was amazing, with his emotions and his performance
John Barrowman? Surprising casting.
Will chase
Uwe Kroger underappreciated in the comments. Huge sound on those narrow German vowels!
Why does no one talk about Niklas Andersson??? He sang it so beautifully
Jason Mills...phenomenal

Definitely Will Chase! He doesn’t only sing it, he totally embodies the role of Chris!

Ramin is always amazing
Can you do some Lion King Comparison Videos?
I DIDN'T KNOW THAT RAMIN WERE CHRIS I'M CRYING
hard one since I have only seen Alistair Brammer live not the others would be such a hard choice for me
Jerome Pradon was also in Jesus Christ Superstar in 2000 as Judas
The third one was in a lower key 😬😬
