    Damn, such a good quality video. It saw right through my soul. This quarantine has been a hell of a ride for me, I learned so many things including fl studio, Photoshop, illustrator, python, c++ but didn't finish any of them, this couple of weeks I learned webdev html css and other stuff until i gave up on it too. And so, I've decided to be stuck with unity for a while, learn c# along playmaker. Gotta be consistent at something. And hey, if you need websites with shitty 2001 design, knock me. And thanks for another great video man.

    great video! An important point not to mention is that even if it adds a layer of "translation" at least these added layers are cleanly coded, whereas many beginners would add their own layer in C# that would not be clean and would slow down the game much more!

    • @StephenScottDayGames
      @StephenScottDayGames  6 месяцев назад

      this is a great point. it's also uniform across all instances, so no worrying about making an error in your logic for each action, AND you could always add/change functionality to an action later if you do learn to write C#.

    Spent years telling myself I was to dumb to make games. In 2018 when I was about to turn thirty I said fuck it, gonna do something. Tried Godot, got nowhere with coding, 30 coming in fast, I tried Comstruct 3. In less than 40 days I finished a course and a vertical slice of a Sega Genesis throwback 2D action platformer that went on to be featured on Newgrounds. Now I’m learning Playmaker so I can make the 3D games I always dreamed of.

    Thanks for this - I'm a new hobbyist game dev who only has evenings and weekends to work on this, and already I've swapped between Unity, Unreal, Godot and even Construct, stuck in a loop of starting things but not having the coding knowledge or skills to actualise them. I don't have a passion project or any real art skills to show off, just a weird magnetism to the idea of making games. I think loads of people are in the same boat currently with the pandemic and need to have some form of creative output, whatever it may be. This video has made me decide I need to break that cycle. I'm not fully sure how, but I think it starts with sticking with an engine and just making some terrible games, and not using RUclips tutorials constantly which I find limits my own input and decision making. I think I'm sold on unity + playmaker. So yeah, thanks and subbed.

No problem you find if I press and you add acttion. Play maker looks the same and because of this its worth to spend 65$ but you need remember if you pay tax it will be 78$ . • @StephenScottDayGames
      @StephenScottDayGames  4 года назад +2

      Probably no better time for me to make a video about Playmaker and Bolt than now, because like I said in this video: it's a case specific and nuanced answer. The best I can tell you right now: If you want to just start making games right now (and really no restrictions, don't let people tell you these programs would limit you and you need C# for absolute power), and you want to start developing your voice as a game designer, and you want to start shipping your own games within the next few days, and you want to have a tool strong enough to create bigger projects if and when you get even more seriously into it--- then get Playmaker. If you want to learn C#, then consider Bolt. Bolt is an analog for C#, and so the threshold might be a *tiny* bit smaller if you're visually oriented, but you're still learning everything you need to learn if you were coding. For me, I would basically never touch Bolt because I would just learn C# instead. To a lot of people C# looks like a snarling dog that'll bite you if you get too close, when it reality it's just a friendly well behaved dog. So Bolt is like taking that dog to get groomed and fluffed up and put cute little socks on it and a sweater that says "I'm a good boy", which then makes people relax and just go to pet it.

      I just answered Jahangir Akbar with something I think will also be an answer to this, you'll see a 3 paragraph reply I left on the "Make Games Without Coding" video. The tldr is: Bolt is a visual representation of C# code, and so I would rather learn C# directly. Yes, C# is still a high-level language, but not nearly as 420 baked af high like Playmaker is. Unity should fund Playmaker and let them keep functioning as their own independent thing, it would be an amazing thing if people knew game development could be this accessible.

    As ai system complex visual scripting fails as a hobby developer I find c++ easy than blueprints in unreal Engine.

    • @StephenScottDayGames
      @StephenScottDayGames  4 года назад +2

      KUNAL KAPOOR yea I can imagine something like Blueprints or Bolt being tedious. That’s what cool about Playmaker, is that it’s not like traditional visual scripting- some might even say Playmaker is not visual scripting. Playmaker is a Finite State Machine, which AAA studios use all the time for complex AI by creating behavior trees. Just like in Alien Isolation, see their behavior tree is made up of a bunch of smaller scripts kinda like Playmaker. Here’s a great breakdown of that: ruclips.net/video/P7d5lF6U0eQ/видео.html and hey whatever works for you! Some people find skipping existing engines like Unity/Unreal altogether their best way to go and just make their own with Python or something. I personally would rather use code like C# or C++ instead of Bolt or Blueprints, but before that I would rather use Playmaker.

    What do you think of this video about why Bolt is better? ruclips.net/video/nA_QmNJeLVA/видео.html

    • @StephenScottDayGames
      @StephenScottDayGames  3 года назад +1

      I have seen this before but it's been a while, from what I remember this person is talking about using Bolt in the classroom and vaguely describing some "ceiling" that his students hit when they design games with Playmaker. If your question is what do I think of this video, my answer is "cool, well put together video. Sounds like a good teacher and cool person." but this doesn't really say anything about my stance on Bolt. I think this comment has gone 4 months without my reply because I keep considering making a video about Bolt. There are just too many considerations for anyone to say Bolt or Playmaker are better, or even when people discuss engines like Unity vs. Unreal. If anyone else comes across this comment and would like me to make a video about my thoughts on Bolt, then just give this comment a like. In short, nothing wrong with Bolt, seems like perfectly fine software! Just personally, I have zero interest in ever using it because I would rather just learn C#--- because Bolt is just a C# analog.
