Oh god I just realized something. Originally a vortigaunt was supposed to dismount the Tau cannon from the car and give it to you. Maybe that was supposed to mirror the experience from HL1 but they removed the portable Tau cannon but kept the song in. That battle sure rocks even without it.
@@BlackSago_ Come to think of it, the Gravity Gun COULD'VE had a theme in Ravenholm, but Ravenholm's so all-encompassing that the only two songs that play in it are basically just about the place itself (which isn't a bad thing, best chapter in the whole game). Fun fact: this song's presence in Half-Life 2 where and when it shows up is no accident. In fact, it's the last hint of a cut link between the two games. The Tau Cannon/Gauss Gun is mounted on the Scout Buggy as a permanent feature in HL2, but appears nowhere else in the game. However, in early designs of Half-Life 2, after or around the Lighthouse Battle, a Vortigaunt was supposed to take the Tau Cannon off the Scout Buggy and give it to you, whereon you'd have it for the rest of the game as a regular weapon. This was cut for unknown reasons, possibly because the role of "mid-to-late-game precision automatic weapon with annihilatory alt-fire" that the Tau Cannon holds was already slated to be held by the Combine Pulse Rifle in HL2, and the Pulse Rifle's planned energy orb alt-shot was possibly seen as more mechanically interesting than the Tau Cannon's overload (which I can't ultimately argue with, as much as I love the Tau Cannon). But the Tau Cannon still stuck it in on the Buggy... and the Tau Cannon's theme, one of Half Life's most distinctive tracks, still shows up at the Lighthouse, the debut for an old friend who never quite made it to the dance.
Any time you open up Steam, this should begin to play. Valve knew what they were doing when the created Half Life 2. Probably the best FPS game ever made. Soundtrack, story, graphics, its all top notch for its time and redefined not only first person shooters, but redefined what could be done in a game. The story takes part around you and you feel like the characters are directly talking to you. Which makes whats going on in the game, mean something to the player. You felt like what you were doing mattered, and with every element of the game, pulled you into a convincing world for as long as you played. That's not only great for a game, but great for telling a story. Only other game to match, or exceed this, is Deus Ex.
Agreed. HL1 and 2 very closely followed by Deus Ex are probably my favourite games of all time. I’d also throw Black Mesa in there because of how good of a remake it is.
