Definitely setup an HSA account that you can fund during the year because it will rollover (unlike an FSA where you have to spend the money or lose it) and the contributions to are tax-free so in your case it will be counted as non-taxable and will drop your taxable income. Unfortunately there is a limit to how much you can contribute to it, but IMO it's worth it.
As for manufacturer imposed "nag-ware" in systems, the one I have hated the most for 10 years is my Ram truck "screams" at me that my keys are in the ignition when the engine is not turned on and the doors are open.

'Back in the day' when I was still a firefighter our LifePak monitor/defibrillators would need an annual inspection and testing. The tech told me they charged $250/hr for the service. $200 of that was for liability insurance alone. That is an extreme example, but you get the point.

It's a combination of those, but I agree, it's more weighted towards protecting the manufacturer. Fact is, safety features costs money, and that gets passed on to the consumer. But also consider the case where a company busy equipment and an employee gets injured or killed, then who wants that safety feature? The company does, because then THEY'RE the ones taking the hit for that. Or maybe the employee, through no fault of his own, has been poorly trained. Most people don't want to be killed, so the employee may get annoyed by that safety feature, but if it prevents him from being injured, he'll be happy about that. Safety culture can be a real PITA, but because you always have stupid or ill-trained people doing stupid things, and we can't just say "Well, that's Darwinism for you...", those safety features will be there.

Good morning Brock. This is a conversation that I would love to have over a cup of coffee or a cold snack. Not that I'm an expert on the subject because I'm not. My wife and I have always had employer provived health insurance. My point is that if you sit down and have this discussion with 10 different people, you'll have 10 different opinions. Everyone's needs and budget are different. I believe that it would be best to sit down with a few reputable representatives of a few different companies, explain your needs, budget, and expectations. Just an old man rambling. God bless and have a wonderful day.

your property insurance / home owners insurance should cover all your equipment on your farm. ours does as long as the equipment is on our property if something happens to it. If we take our tactors off the property for instance baling hay we are not covered unless we have a separate insurance policy.

Medicare is something to consider I’m 68 years old so I have health insurance through my Medicare and Annette seems to have covered everything I need when I had anything happened to me, but I also self-employed and went years without insurance as far as my tractor it would annoy me if I couldn’t get off the seat to do something obviously when the PTO is on, that’s not possibility it always shuts off, but you wouldn’t want to run that point unless you were running a wood splitter there’s a different mechanism to switch on, but if my tractor made me do the emergency break and all kinds of other Things I would have to unhook it your channel. I love your channel and look forward to all your new releases love seeing your grandkids. Be curious to see your wife and your children sometime. It’s good to see your dad. A personal liability umbrella policy is short money for the amount of protection it gives you. It's one of those things where it is unlikely that you'll ever need it - but if you need it and don't have it, the consequences can be devastating.
    Take care and God Bless.
PS -- I am also not in favor of Obamacare. I don't think that government should be involved in paying for folks' health insurance with my tax dollars. But the fact remains that the program is in place whether I want it to be or not. If we choose to not at least look into using it, we are cutting off our nose to spite our face.

I just bought a Kioti CK2620 cab/hst and it took a few times of hopping off the tractor w/o the parking brake set and the tractor shutdown.
I do like that the seat switch is delayed, that way if you do get off the seat to see better it has about a 10 second or so delay before shutdown.
Since I want to try to do a “side hustle” with the tractor, I got insurance as well. Figured it was worth the $800/yr in case something happens off my property.

I’m not a big fan of many safety features that come on equipment or vehicles nowadays. But I do understand that the goal is to protect the stupid people I guess. It minimizes natural selection from weeding out the people that should not be doing those things.
As far as health insurance goes, my wife and I are self-employed. And we go through the marketplace “Obamacare“. And at first, I was not a big fan of the affordable care act when it was first debuted, but it has actually worked in our benefit. Our premiums are relatively low in a covers everything that we need to cover.

I've pretty much always had health insurance through an employer and can't imagine not having it. Always have been pretty healthy, then at 59, boom, prostate cancer (no symptoms!), $50K, a couple years later, hernia, $20k. One thing no one talks about is that with insurance, even if you pay a percentage yourself, it's based on the insurance company's negotiated rate, not the rate you would pay if you didn't have insurance. They get a much lower price than I would pay. Something to consider.

My handicapped stepson (45) has basic health insurance thru a state (of Colorado) plan, I think it's $250/mo and covers the normal preventative and emergency type things. WRT all the safety features, they are mostly a result of liability lawsuits (ie: spill a hot coffee on your lap and sue - and WIN) I have all OLD vehicles and tractor, so I don't need/want the added expense of all these advanced features. As a Software guy, I appreciate their purpose, but sensors add cost, are failure prone, and become expensive to maintain in the future. Keep it simple is what I prefer. I have a shuttle shift tractor, love being able to STAND UP and get better vision when grading the road/driveway (at slow speed).😇

I’m fine with the safety features. They protect the companies from liability and they protect new owners who may not be knowledgeable on some of the dangers of heavy equipment.
At the same time, some safety protections should have a way to disable easily by the owner.
Example: In my LS MT347, visibility of the front bucket and grapple is poor. Sometimes I need to stand while doing work to get a better vantage point. Doing so however will stop the engine because of the seat weight sensor.

For a new person that has no experience the built in safety can help. On the other end, too many safety features can make you complacent and take more risks. I do know a guy that was just a year away to retire, let his homeowners insurance laps while shopping for a new company. He and his wife went on one last "dream vacation" to Europe before retirement and their house burned to the ground. Its all about how much risk you are willing to take.

It’s a hard call. I think they should put safety devices on them, but make them easy to disable if you want to and have some kind of bypass, for instance, seat switch like you were talking about if you’re way out 80 acres into your property and your seat switch breaks. Do you want to have to walk all the way back, go get parts and fix it out in the middle of your field or do you want to be able to just unplug it and keep going and fix it later. It needs to be easy to bypass. I don’t know. I had an old Camaro that leaked power, steering fluid and had a starter problem where it wouldn’t start when it was hot so if I was out driving far for the day, I’d stop at a gas station and i’d leave it running and reached down between the belts and top off my power steering fluid with my hand in between spinning belts, but I wasn’t gonna shut my car off for 45 minutes to cool down. I was just extra careful. It was stupid but I knew it was stupid. I’ve he guys with saws missing fingers and those stupid little plastic guards may prevent that stuff, so it’s kind of up to you, sometimes they say body parts or even save lives and that’s a good thing but I don’t think they should be some sort of requirement either and if they are, they should be easy to bypass.
Safety, buzzers and stuff can be annoying but the things are really bugging me are the regulatory stuff like the region nonsense :/

Common sense has become a super power. I was born and raised in the US and now live in another country,. The reason I see for the safety protocols are law suits. I also worked in advertising while in the US and some of the things we were required to do to prevent a lawsuit were crazy. So, I think a lot of the "safety features" are to prevent big lawsuit payouts.
In the US there is a lawsuit challenge that some countries don't have to worry about,
When I was in the states the best option for me was to open a HSA ( Health Savings Account). It was more beneficial. Basically you open up a bank account with a bank that provides an HSA option. You pay into it each month (tax free) just like an insurance premium. Then when you go to the doc or have a prescription you pay for it out of pocket then reimburse yourself from you HSA. Now this is a very elementary explanation, but I would look into it. It makes more sense for people who are "healthy" or don't visit the doc a lot.
One more thing. I was also self employed and there were options available to me via small business associations that offered cheaper rates because several bussnesses participated.
Basically what I am trying to say is that there are options. Appologies for the lon comment. Cheers.

I'm a big believer in safety. They call a lot of these things dummy switches. Which is great, cuz I'm a dummy. Before I owned my own place, a lot of my co-workers were dummies. Now that I own my own business, I see a lot of my employees or dummies. I've come to the conclusion that dummy is a synonym for human. We're all capable of enormous stupidity and oversight. However, these dummy switches, designed, tested, and engineered, are often just as dumb as the the dumb thing. I might have done. Have done. Having things buzz and antagonize makes working suck. When I was 15 years old, over so many many years ago, the old Foreman told me, when using a rebar chop saw, just squint your eyes and lean to the side a little bit. Bad timing for me, the blade exploded a few minutes after I started cutting rebar. Pieces of it were impaled in my left shoulder. I thought I was going to get in trouble because I had broken the equipment on my first day. I still have numbness in my left arm and hand because of some of the nerve damage. Just take safety seriously.

Relying on safety equipment can also be bad... iv herd a story of a local who's young kid was mowing the grass with a little ride on mower, the dad said the seat safety switch got stuck and when the mower rolled it kept running blades and all, the kid was fine.
I raise my daughter to tell her how dangerous things are and to respect the dangers and I never rely of safety mechanisms because they too can fail.
My coworker actually said he knew someone running a pto wood chipper and the u joint exploded on the pto. no safety there just have to understand dangers and use your brain.
Just like cars now.... my suv has lane assist, adaptive cruise, and forward collision warning, and more.... iv found it works great 90% of the time.... but now kids rely on the car to drive for them so they can text and drive... but its when it doesn't work that will cost you!

I’m fine with the bond opposed to the insurance, though in the case of automobile insurance or a bond to cover the cost of an accident in your liability I think that’s a good requirement because you’re out there risking other peoples property and lives and health when we choose to drive. Your own tractor on your own farm, don’t even care, but if you get in a car accident and you don’t have assurance you screw people over. I’ve been hit before and luckily I wasn’t injured, but my car got trashed and the person had no insurance and we went to court and they were busted for drunk driving and the judge ordered them to pay for my car and they did it, but they don’t send those people to jail. They just don’t pay and nothing ever happens to them so I got screwed and had a pretty high deductible at the time because I was living in Southern California and I was under 25 so having $1000 deductible was saving me seven or $800 per yearand I was still paying I believe $1800 at the time and that was 35 years ago😂 so if there was mandatory liability, more people would be covered, and these things will be dealt with, especially when someone’s in injured and has medical costs or totaled car. When it’s not mandatory a lot of people don’t bother to buy it because they just don’t care and then they got hit people in those people they hit get screwed over. But the bond is still covering you and you have that liability you’re just self insured. There are a lot of rich people who self-insure, especially people with multiple cars and large businesses, some companies have to. Most trash, truck, companies or sanitation companies have to self ensure because nobody will ensure them anymore because they’ve hit so many cars and paid off so many claims they can’t get insurance now In most states, so they required to self-insure do like you said where they have a bond set aside and still pay off those claims and it’s cheaper for them because they’re not paying somebody else all that extra money for the service of providing insurance and aren’t losing a ton of money until they hit somebody. Most rich people do have an umbrella policy of self insurance because it’s ridiculously cheaper and that’s cool but with they’re really doing is protecting their assets, like you were saying, if you get a multi car accident and everybody blames you all of a sudden you’re getting millions of dollars worth of Lawsuits against you and your insurance is only going to cover their maximums, but most poor people don’t buy it because in that situation, you declare bankruptcy and if you’re renting and you don’t own a house, if you’re poor, it’s one of those situations where there’s nothing you can do because you can’t get blood out of a turn up and They’ll just say I can’t pay and not pay it and they don’t send them to jail. They’ll come after them and worst case scenario they’ll declare bankruptcy and then the courts will tell you there’s nothing they can do about it. Which is also the case with illegal aliens, illegal aliens slams in with their car doesn’t have any insurance And your insurance won’t cover it then you can go to court all you want. You can convict them all they want, but if they don’t pay, there’s nothing you can do about it they don’t even have to declare bankruptcy because they see they’re in illegal alien. They just say there’s no way to collect from them and there’s nothing you can do about it.
I don’t know, some of the safety features and insurance are a good thing, but I still think in most cases, you should be allowed to bypass them easily, and especially if it’s just an audible alarm, that should be something you can easily turn off. I don’t like the forced regulation part especially with things like the region stuff, and if it’s a situation like where they do it in California and the rest of the country can take the stuff off or delete it and everything works then awesome I’m cool with that but Some of these regulations are just ridiculous. :/ I’m sure a lot of these things on the tractors are things that the government said you have to have these safety features on there like saws have to have those plastic guards and all the professionals just take them off but either because of a lot or because of potential liability from the company that makes these products they put them on there usually that way if you go cut your finger off you can’t sue them for making that unsafe so because you remove the safety guard on your own. I’m fine with that part of it I just don’t like go through the government and mandate ridiculous things that are unnecessary

Howdy Brock! Our entire society is based on litigation. Every warning label on every product is there because somebody sued somebody for something lol. That coffee cup from McDonalds has a "Warning - Contents Hot" label because enough people spilled hot coffee on their crotch and got big settlements from a jury. If I had it to do over again I'd be a lawyer or a meteorologist... both get paid whether they are right or wrong. A lot of consumer costs are what they are because of liability and litigation considerations.
Some, if not most, medical services have an 'insurance' price and a 'non-insurance' price. For instance, an office visit to my primary care physician is $120 if you have insurance... and $80 if you don't. And for a very short time back in the late 2000's when I didn't have insurance, they only charged me what my co-pay would be. I wouldn't count on that today though lol. I work on the fringe of the corporate world, so I have pretty good insurance. But if I was paying for it completely out of pocket, I would only carry enough insurance to cover major stuff. A $5,000 total out of pocket expense policy doesn't sound too bad to me.

The manufacturers have, over the years, added safety switches, sensors, interlocks, engine kill switches little by little, as the government of the intended market demands. Why does the government demand, or "care," what safety is provided for an end-user?
    IT DOESN'T!
These laws have been put in place by attorney driven lobbyists at the whim of attorneys from the manufacturers looking to mitigate lawsuits of liability. The tractor/equipment makers are seen as deep pockets...natural for a piranha tort/class action/liability claims attorney to go for the biggest purse. The Risk Management legal departments for the manufacturers have to respond in kind to prevent loss. What better way than to heap unstudied and ill-conceived methods upon the consumers, who end up not only paying more for a tractor, but more for "Safety Institute" legal moves to protect them from big, bad, dangerous machines. The only way these safety devices and protocols would get placed is through legislation. Go sit in on a hearing of corporate lobbyists pounding for a certain thing...it's all about the lobbyist and the sympathetic legislator getting palms greased...it's how it's done.
See the common threads here? Money and lawyers, every time.

  • @gckshea

One reality is prices of medical care and dental all cost a higher amount if you utilize insurance. They bill insurance at fee schedules that are higher than if you pay cash. Why? Because insurance pays! And the fees take into account dealingvwith insurance claims is costly to a medical practice. A whole HR category is dedicated to dealing just with claims.
When I came out of school, it was deemed unethical to have more than one fee schedule, and what was charged to an insured customer was supposed to be the same across the board. Um, that never happened, and cash is king. Then enter third-party medical credit plans (CareCredit), which had super high user fees in the day. Now all credit fees are passed on to the customer right up front...and there's no convenience to use a credit card except for being cashless.
Insurance will always, always profit....it's business.

$140 per month with a $5000 deductible sounds cheap to me. Research the company and other peoples’ claim experiences. Also, make sure you know what coverage you have when you haul your equipment to somebody’s property. Many think their car insurance covers the tractor on the trailer when out on the road, but that generally is not the case. The “victim’s” insurance will go after anybody who appears to have deep pockets. During my 30 year tenure in the equipment business, our company had 3 different million+ dollar insurance claims against us because of 3 highway accidents; two of which had fatalities. Fortunately, we had insurance that covered us. With insurance, you are betting you will need it and the insurance company, who is very skilled at calculating risk, is betting you will not need it. After the first million in liability insurance, the second million is very inexpensive. WIthout insurance coverage, you are betting you can personally pay the small claims out of your pocket and you will be willing to hand over your key chains and titles/deeds for everything you own if you can’t pay. Yep, insurance is a racket; but then so is most of the bills I pay every month for TV. Internet, etc. I was wondering if you carried insurance for your “off the farm” activities with your equipment.

As far as the insurance goes. Insurance is cool, but what nobody in the medical field will tell you because the medical industry is owned and trained by the pharmaceutical industry is that if you stop eating certain things you get rid of the primary causes of disease and you eliminate about 95% of the disease, including, the inability to regulate your weight and heart disease. We’re told to eat all these ridiculous things and doctors don’t get any nutritional training common. In fact, even a licensed nutritionist has very little training maybe two3:00 hours in the area of nutrition, I’ve got about 3500 hours And most nutritionist look at me like a lost puppy when I start talking about nutrition. To break it down carnivore diet is the minimum healthy diet you need to eat healthy meat, grass fed beef, pasture, raised, chicken, eggs, and wild, caught seafood of a small, younger variety, salmon, chunk light, tuna sardines, mackerel, stuff like that. Make these the core of your diet. Stay away from carbs. Carbs are not a nutrient. It’s just the measurement of sugar and food and sugar is always bad Process food companies make stuff taste good and design it to last on a shelf but it’s not healthy food so eat is a little of it as possible stay away from seed oil and wash your vegetables. Very good if you buy them from a store. If you make the core of your diet, those meats, I talked about eat it with the fat and accent that diet with some cruciferous vegetables and leafy greens to make that core of your diet you will eliminate type two diabetes, 100% of the time you will eliminate almost all heart disease. Your blood pressure will be awesome, mine used to be incredibly high now it’s almost always below 120/80 and I’m 56, inflammation is the root of disease is not cholesterol that causes heart disease it’s inflammation that damages your cholesterol makes small dense particles. Those are the only kind clinically provement to increase your risk of heart disease, but the number one risk of heart disease is type two diabetes, which isn’t even a disease it’s a condition we get from eating garbage, i.e. carbs and process food chemicals And seed oils. If you go carnivore and you can add crucifer vegetables and leafy guinea greens and you stay away from seed oils and processed crap. Within about 3 to 4 months. Your blood pressure will be significantly lower and in a healthy range within about 6 to 8 months you can probably be off of any medication you’re on and have great blood pressure, you also lose a lot of weight and because you’re not loading up on carbs and triggering your insulin all the time which tells your body to store fat and shut down until the sugar passes because it sees it as a danger, You’ll also feel full when you eat and you won’t get hunger again for a long time I only eat twice a day now and I don’t snack in between and I’m eating about quarter of the food that I used to and I don’t deny myself I eat as much as I want and I lost a ton of weight I have the blood pressure of a healthy 20-year-old and I’m 56 I’ve gotten rid of all my meds and according to my doctor, I have no signs of any disease in my body, and even though I don’t eat, grains and starches hardly ever, I don’t have any nutritional deficiencies either. This will make your cholesterol numbers go higher, but it will be all healthy cholesterol and get rid of your heart disease. And if you study people who go carnivore, this is the story with almost every single one of them, everything gets fixed but their cholesterol goes high and that’s not a problem with the diet. That’s a problem with them lying about cholesterol because statins make them 100 of billions of dollars a year and really don’t even work but a healthy cholesterol level is closer to 300 to 350 not 200 and a 100 point level of LDL cholesterol is ridiculous people with 144. LDL cholesterol are exponentially healthier than people with a 100 point LDL cholesterol they just lie to us to sell us drugs. I know some people say that’s crazy whatever but there are tons of thousands of doctors out there teaching their patients this and their patients are getting healed not medicated and they’re thousands of people that are now healthy because they stopped eating grains, starchy foods, sugar, fruits, and processed foods and seed oils, which are a byproduct of grain processing. Eliminate those And you’re good and I used to be the kind of person that went to the doctor sick about six or eight times a year my entire life and I’ve been eating this way for two years and 11 months only gone to the doctor for basic stuff because I’m almost never sick anymore And I have no signs of disease in my body and my blood pressure is awesome. Your doctors and pharmaceutical industry will never admit to this because if they told everybody this, they would eliminate about 90% of the doctors and 90% of the medication because they really don’t do much anyway, other than generate profit for the pharmaceutical industry/medical industry. You still need doctor you break your arm you’re gonna need a doctor you break your leg you’re gonna need a doctor, but most disease comes from inflammation you eliminate the dietary causes of inflammation, and almost all those diseases go away. I used to be super worried about my medical insurance. Now I almost don’t care because chances of me ever spending as much on Drs as I do buying medical insurance is incredibly rare so again, you would be paying for the oddball thing where it ended up cussing you hundreds of thousands of dollars but With her without medical insurance if we change the way we eat we eliminate about 90% of the need for Drs anyway and in the cases of heart disease type two diabetes and blood pressure issues, if you eat this way those will disappear because you’re eliminating the inflammation that causes all of these. It also a huge effect on cancer and even Things like anxiety and depression and mood and your metabolism and your immune system, these are all issues based in excess inflammation, and the food they tell us to eat loads our bodies with inflammation and causes disease if we stop eating that crap we get better and this is even organic food. If you grow a bunch of corn and eat it you’re loading your body with toxic chemicals because even if it’s organic corn Corn seeds, grains some beans and legumes they produce their own plant toxins and three and Monsanto copy that to make their store-bought versions. This is the plants natural mechanism for defending itself from being eaten and especially when we buy pest resistant strains those are just plants with about 15 times the amount of natural talk and our bodies can’t handle that stuff and it’s making America sick. You always hear stories about people going to Italy and France and Europe and all of a sudden they can eat bread and pasta and things like that not get sick like they do in America, that’s because they don’t allow pest resistant strains and genetically modified crap over there and their grains are still unhealthy but they’re about 15 times better than ours and your body can handle some of that but it shouldn’t be part of our regular diet. And FDA approval means nothing. They’ll approve stuff that kills people all the time because they don’t actually do anything but have people fill out paperwork promising that they tested it and it’s a useless agency.
The faith base stuff I think is a good idea where they have the bronze and silver and gold levels where you can kind of pick and choose but they’re a lot smarter because they’re minimal on profit and it’s basically just a bunch of people getting together and if there is some huge emergency then You’re pulling your money with other people as opposed to supporting huge corporations, and from what I’ve heard they’ve got pretty good coverage and are quite a bit cheaper.
Other options are go talk to the Hospital, number one if you go to the emergency room you get a $4000 Emergency Room bill go back and say you got the billing wrong. I want an itemized bill and almost always you get a bill back that much lower usually close to half because they’re ridiculous with their charges at hospitals and a lot of people will just pay it and think they have no choice. The truth is if you say you can’t afford it there’s almost no chance anybody’s gonna actually come after you for that money and most people without significant assets, especially if they’re renting, will just refuse to pay it and they want him to come after them because worst-case scenario that they color bankruptcy just like with auto accidents and they’re not gonna throw somebody in jail for not paying an Emergency Room bill. But usually the itemized bill comes back and you go in and you nitpick and say this is ridiculous and sit down with an administrator and when you get to the end, tell them it’s still ridiculously high and ask if there are any way to get help with the bill, and there are a lot of agencies out there. They get funding to do exactly this, especially for emergencies stuff. And if it’s still ridiculously high, just tell them you cannot afford to pay it and ask what they can do for you and a lot of times the fact that you’re just willing to participate instead of just blowing it off Will have them working with you and sometimes they’ll sort of take what they can get. But you can almost always cut an Emergency Room bill in half especially if it’s a long stay like if you went in with pneumonia or something we’re there for days. Other things don’t take medication from them for stuff like Tylenol don’t Let them give you extra socks and pillows and junk like that because they charge ridiculous amounts like $200 for Tylenol that you could bring yourself or have somebody else bring you

I gained about 83 pounds and I was already 350 when I started and finally, I just said screw the doctors they’re killing me and I went on a keto diet got really sick because I did it wrong and just sort of got obsessed with studying nutrition and figuring out why I was getting sick eating normal food And just figured it out and I do eat vegetables but I only eat vegetables that are very low in carbs and have about equal the same amount of fiber and I eat small amounts of vegetables to avoid the toxins and I lost 200 pounds and even before I lost the weight my blood pressure was almost perfect Within a few months and I was off all my meds. And I’ve obsessed about studying nutrition and medical and learning to read clinical data, and what I found out was the system was incredibly corrupt, and they just flat out lie to us and keep us sick to sell us drugs. Most drugs barely work if they work at all things like statins they make tens of thousands of dollars a year off of per patient and they’re pretty much a garbage drug that does almost nothing it lowers your cholesterol a little, but doesn’t prevent damage cholesterol, so it doesn’t Decrease the rate of heart disease and they base her success on slightly lowering your cholesterol, but they don’t actually save any lives according to the data. I’m glad you figured it out, it saved my life and I’m not perfect but I’m alive and I’m a whole lot healthier than I’ve been in decades and I don’t need any meds and other than shots in my knees for the osteoarthritis I don’t even need to go to the doctor. You're talking about a single theme. Maybe you realize that, or maybe you don't.
Too much nannying from the State or from Corporations gives people a false sense of security, and creates what's called a moral hazard.
Moral hazard is an insurance term of art. When you're over-insured, you may take unnecessary or excessive risks that you wouldn't otherwise take.
Anyway, it's a good topic. Too many people do not remotely comprehend the risks they are taking every day.
Reviewing your risk exposure periodically is a good idea.
As for safety equipment and interlocks on everything, I'm against it. Use your brain.

My first acts on any new equipment is to disable the seat switch and to remove all drive line protection as well as devices that prevent me from operating the equipment as I need/want to……. I believe is my choice my problem. If you really think about it… there is no such thing as an ACCIDENT any more because the cultural mind set is that somebody must pay me because I was a dumb ass!!! 😂😂😂. It’s insane how much all this safety equipment adds to the cost of the equipment today…..

You want to have insurance because of how costly everything is right now. One bad accident and you could be bankrupt. I have a farm policy that covers most of my equipment. When I was in trucking I got sued for an accident that one of my drivers had that did not look like a bad accident and no one went to the doctor but almost three years later right at the latest that someone could sue they did. They sued for 2 million dollars. My insurance settled with this guy who didn't seek any medical after the accident but claimed to have all these problems later. So when you see all these billboards up advertising lawyers, trust me they will get you.

Another thing to consider with self insurance, there are ways you can invest and basically make all that money tax deductible so instead of giving all your money to the government, you’re putting it into insurance mainly life insurance policies and basically what you do is you put your money in the bank and then you borrow it, from yourself. But because you’re borrowing all the money, you spending your business and your food and everything else in life, it’s basically all the deductible because you can’t be taxed on debt it’s not income. This is the way a lot of rich people do it they basically establish equity and then they loan themselves money on it and they only have to pay taxes on what they get back because everything else is a business expense and then your personal income your living off of debt, and you can amortize everything and Borrow the money from yourself so you only have to pay taxes when you pay it back and you still have to pay taxes but you end it with so many right off at ridiculous and they are a lot of rich people making millions of dollars per year that pay, almost nothing attack doing it that way And it some sort of loophole through life insurance and in the end they can borrow against that life insurance or take the money out and have it all back and you make up your life insurance and basically just pay your entire income into your life insurance policy, and then borrow against that from yourself to live off of and of course, now you’re in debt And borrowing money so you don’t have an income, technically, because you invested every penny you have in a tax write off life insurance policy. It’s a little more complicated than that groups that help people do this, but there are lots and lots of millionaires that do this to avoid paying huge amounts of taxes and in the end they end up with a huge life insurance policy if they die, it goes to their familyor they can cash it out and you pay less than you pay in taxes

I have a high deductible health plan through my employer, and I have a health savings account along with it which allows saving money pre tax for medical expenses, and the interest is also tax free as long as you only pay for medical with the money. You can keep a health savings account until retirement and always use it for medical expenses, as long as you have a high deductible health plan. With respect to having health insurance, you gotta think of your family and the potential bill they have to pay. With respect to other safety devices on equipment, there is such a thing as too much. I’d take an operator presence switch in the seat, as long as it had an override so I could shift to see the loader like you say. For what it’s worth, those systems are electronic and will fail… the neutral start switch on my 42 year old Ford tractor (the only safety it had… no ROPS or seatbelt or operator presence stuff) failed several years ago. The part wasn’t/isn’t available, so re-wired to start without it. You could conceivably crank the engine with the machine in gear and move. But who would? Not only do I start in neutral (because I used to have to), I hold the clutch down too. Pretty common sense.

On insurance, I have all the cars insured and Add a 1M umbrella; at the farm, I have property insurance with a 3M umbrella. I didn’t bother with the others as I always put it in neutral and set the parking brake when I park it. But the seat switch had me P’O’d every time I used the machine. Practically every bump may cause the seat to jump up! And then cause the machine to shut off. Plus of course to see the loader, grapple, etc when it’s close to the ground I’d have to stand up. With regard to the multitude of safety measures on our equipment and vehicles, I’m generally opposed. That being said, there are obvious modern day measures that are a good thing…seat belts, airbags, ROPS, blind spot sensors, etc. Overall, I think less is better, and I’m opposed to the government mandating to manufacturers and to us, assuming our inaction doesn’t directly endanger someone else.
Insurance is another thing. I hate paying premiums. Unfortunately in today’s society, some level of insurance is almost a necessary evil. If you have any significant assets, liability insurance is almost a must to protect those assets from our lawsuit happy society. Living without at the very least some type of catastrophic health care policy is dangerous and borderline irresponsible. By not having healthcare insurance we not only possibly deny ourselves life-saving care but potentially saddle our spouses and loved ones with lifestyle altering healthcare debt in the event of our death or becoming incapacitated. Houses, buildings, vehicles, and equipment are another thing. I guess it boils down to how much you can afford to lose. I find myself insuring my major items, but that being said, I choose the highest deductible to keep costs as low as possible. Couple years ago I went to an all encompassing farm policy and umbrella that covers basically everything I own that i want or requires insurance. It ended up saving me 20-25% over the hodgepodge I previously had.

My L4701HST lets you get on and off the tractor with it running, in gear, and the brake not set. If you apply throttle without being in the seat, it will kill the engine. This is a good thing MOST of the time. If I'm ever thrown from the tractor, I do want the engine to be killed. However, I would like the option to temporarily disable it for the exact situation you mention. I'm all for safety features that have a reasonable default condition and that can be reconfigured or overridden as necessary. My '21 Ford Ranger will throw a warning and buzzer if you open the door with it in gear, but it doesn't stop you.
Short story: Back in '91 I bought a brand new Toyota pickup with an automatic transmission. About 3 years later, I went to roll it backwards in the driveway and it wouldn't go in gear. It took me a second to figure out I had to press the brake pedal. It was such an unconscious action to apply the brake before shifting out of park that I just never thought about it. That kind of safety feature is perfectly acceptable. Completely passive, never interfered with operating the vehicle, and it took an odd case for me to even be aware of it.
