Kings and Generals' historical animated documentary series on the history of Rome continues with an episode of the post-Caesar Civil Wars, as we look at what happened after the initial shock of Caesar's assassination. This episode will continue with the aftermath of the battle of Mutina, as Octavian, Antony, and Lepidus created a triumvirate, taking over Rome, which signaled to Brutus and Cassius, that there will be another civil war. The latter collected their legions and started building their base of operations, leading to the battles of Xanthos and Rhodes, and that, in turn lead to the battle of Philippi that would decide the fate of the war between the Caesareans and Pompeians.

The relationship between the members of this new triumvirate seems to be stronger than the previous one. Looking forward on them ruling the Roman Republic for many years to come.

Antonius , Octavian and Lepidus had no choice but victory or death. Caesar was too generous towards his enemies and they abused this so they had to punish end exterminate every leader who was against Caesar and his successors. But after the victory women(Livia and Cleopatra) came...
Nearly every student from the modern region of East Macedonia and Thrace in Greece has visited the site of the battle, some of us more than once, as the archaelogical site of Philippi is one of the most popular field trip destinations for schools of any grade in the region. The remains of the ancient city and especially the well-preserved theatre are fascinating. Philippi, according to Christian tradition, was also the first city in Greece proper (and Europe) where Paul the Apostle preached (ca 50 AD?) and the site where the first conversion to Christianity in Europe took place, a Greek woman named Lydia.
P.S.: A bit funny seeing at 5:33 your hometown popping up in a map of 42 BC, some 1900 years before its foundation. 😄Contemporary towns in its place were Mesembria and Sale.

They had to, they found out in preproduction during season 2 that the 2nd season would be it. Season 2 was supposed to be the Triumvate and season 3 woould be there break up.

the HBO ROME is one of the best tv series made, the plot is so amazing that there is no need for cheap slaughter (or expensive taking in account that it was produced in 2005 and cgi was still poor)

If you're looking for Classical History, Historia Civilis is much better than K&G. Don't get me wrong, they're still good, but HC is superior

@@sidp5381 You gotta be kidding me? HC goes into so much more depth in combat, and in everything else. And the primary reason that HC is better than K&G is because the latter neglects pretty much everything aside from military history, only giving basic points about the wider circumstances. HC, on the other hand, explains both the circumstances leading to battles, as well as the actual politics of the age. He's just better at giving the actual history

Today, Philippi is near Kavala (Neapolis). Philippi is an archaeological site of UNESCO. You can see the ancient theater, the ancient city, the museum and the location of the battle
This battle is the epitome of absurd luck that Octavian has. Literally nearly loses the battle because he isn't willing to let anyone lead his half of the army, but is saved by two lucky coincidences, what makes Cassius death doubly ironic is that had he realized they were friendly cavalry it probably would have turned the tide and let them win that day.
The clouds moving away from each other on the map reveal, a sword flying through the head of a leader who is killed, the sound effects & music, & other little details like that make this 100x times more epic & interesting. Great team you got.
I have a strong feeling everything will turn out fine for the Republic now.

One of the most fascinating periods for historical study. Almost every name that comes out of this period is a genuine titan of history
I know there are a lot more famous Roman conflicts and battles but I’ve been dying for this battle break down. I think for the most part we glance over the specifics of the fall of the republic and birth of the empire. Growing up I thought rome always had an emperor. Thank you guys for your hard work, deep research, and mentally digestible content. My love for understanding the human story has grown exponentially thanks to your content. I truly hope one day to join the ranks and inform our fellow humans on the topics of the past!

There's something about Cassius' death that I find hard to believe. Why would he be so sure about Brutus being defeated? Even if he suspected it, why kill yourself immediately rather than try to confirm your suspicion about who the approaching soldiers were? Had he simply lost his mind at that point?
Because the fear of being captured and paraded by Mark Antony/Octavian is extremely high. Don’t forget that Mark Antony had Cicero’s head and hands displayed in the Roman forum. It would have been torture/and or humiliating to be captured alive.
People’s mindsets were very different back then compared to now, nowadays one wouldn’t die for his honour or one wouldn’t die due to shame and so on

One wonders what would have happened if the Triumvirate failed at Philippi...would Caesar be remembered the way he is today? Would Brutus and Cassius have destroyed any evidence of Caesar? We can only speculate!

Also, is it Lepidius, we only know of due to a slave's letter found in northern Spain? He was wiped later from Roman history. Unless I am getting confused and it's another lepidius sounding name.

The numbers involved in these civil wars were colossal. Just imagine the power of Rome without the constant infighting. All the power hungry and greedy aristocrats couldn't compromise or keep their paranoia under control. Caesar would have done a lot more good. The additional campaigns would have been so interesting.
It does seems like the aristocrats were being unreasonable. I wouldn’t expect them to give their land to the poor but maybe some open space for some apartments for the law abiding urban poor
@@larrymays4244 There were attempts to reform, but any successful attempt to improve the lot of common people would have given the reformer senator lots of new grateful clients. In the dysfunctional political culture of Late Republic, senators preferred blocking important initiatives to seeing their rivals gain any advantage. Meanwhile the masses grew ever more desperate and volatile, and with this did the paranoia of elite about populism. Dictatorships and triumvirates could to some degree cut through the mess, but it wasn't until Emperor Augustus that functioning government was truly restored.
Additional campaigns would be interesting ? Rape, pillaging and bloodshed follow all military campaigns. Weather in the past or present warfare is never good. It’s an evil necessity for when strong evil men prey upon weak neighbors. Are you glad Russia invaded Ukraine because it’s interesting ? It’s just as delusional to wish for more warfare in the past as it is to wish for war in the present. War is never good, if you ever served you would know that.

Wonderful video! The rein of Octavian was considered a successful one but of course it ushered in the permanent death of The Republic and signaled the beginning of the end for Rome as a great power.

Today I visited the archaeological site of Philippi, in Macedonia Greece. It is stunning! Greek, Roman and Byzantine history all at one place, creating an impressive place to visit. A magnificent ancient theater, the agora, the Via Egnatia, the prison of the Apostles Paul and Silas, and the breath taking museum with coins from the eras of Alexander the Great and Caesar and marvelous Greek and Roman statues, such as the statue of Hercules.

Nice video. I had no idea Brutus met his end like that. I wonder how different history would've been had Brutus n friends triumphed over Antony and Octavian? My compliments to all those who made this video a reality.
It was inevitable Rome to rule by a dictator(Emperor) because times changed. Senate of Rome was not able to make quick decisions for a problem what was far away from Italy. E. G. It took for Sulla and Lucullus to defeat Milthiades a plenty of years and generated civil war again and again[ok that had continued in the time of Emperors but Imperial burocracy was more effected]. It was a big question what would happened if Octavian gave up in the begging to be Caesar's successor. Mark Anthony became the new dictator? Or Brutus and Cassius win and after some decades new aspirant coming up as a dictator? We never know. That is unhistorical what would happen if...

Cassius: Lead assassin of Caesar and the second great leader of the Pompeyan faction. Cause of Death: Accidentally commits suicide when he thinks the battle is a complete loss instead of a draw.
I think the side of these events that really stands out to me is how there are just so many "what if" moments that could have changed so much if they'd gone the other way. Like what if Cassius hadn't killed himself there. Would the battle have gone on longer? Would they have won? Would the Triumviates have suffered greater losses that would have in turn altered what happened next? Could have either Antony or Octavian died?

Octavian always seemed to come down with some malady before a major battle. 😊 IMO, without the loyalty and skill of Marcus Agrippa (that combination was rare in the late Republic), Octavian would have never risen to power.
