Great review. In my case I bought 2 DAB radios, HAMA DIT1000MBT and ALBRECHT DR 52 DAB radio and I'm very happy. Since my reception is very weak I only use radios with 75 ohm coaxial input (similar to antenna/cable input on TV), with an outdoor antenna I solved all reception problems. In my opinion all DAB radios should have a connector for external antenna in case the reception is very poor.
I've got both this and P1DBP. Also had the smaller sibling, S41D. Performance is similar on all three radios, they probably share the exact same DSP circuit / firmware. The sound of the S61D is OK, but not as good as you would expect from such a big speaker and digital amp. One interesting thing: at the bottom there is a small cover with a single screw. Opening it reveals a hidden USB port. I guess this could be used to update firmware.
@@tdcattech Hello, thanks for the review. From the video it seems like the radio is not very loud, would you recommend it to an older person in 5x6m room?
Your lover is from Saudi Arabia How wonderful and creative you are And you have a great sense of nostalgic 🤗 Where can I find the Panasonic Sony radio model? Icf sw 55 Unfortunately I didn’t find it
Please please please do a video on the Kreafunk aTune FM/DAB+ radio. I love the design but there is no video on the internet to actually see how it works/sounds/look. Thanks!
Hi mate, great review. I've just picked this up from Currys for £48! Just a question for you - can I use the power adapter from the xdr s41d on it as it's slightly longer? They're both 5v but one is 0.7? Thanks!
I'm afraid I haven't tried the Play 20 but unless you need a smaller radio, I would choose the Sony every time based on what I do know of it. I personally hate the Roberts designs. They look cheap and dated. The products also look extremely poorly made but again, without handling one, I'm only basing that on pictures. Then there's the colour screen. Not really needed and uses more power than an LCD. Just my opinion and I welcome someone to come back and tell me I'm talking complete rubbish. 🙂
The white case, dial and rounded corner display reminded me of the first iPod (launched in 2001). The font is very low resolution compared with that 2001 iPod though. Sounded like you wished it had an iPod wheel instead of what Sony provided :) do you know if, when battery-powered, how long the radio takes to turn on and start playing the previously selected DAB station?
I honestly don't know. Firmware would be my guess but I've never checked. I don't think Sony release firmware for such devices so I imagine this is factory.
Yes. The radio is a fair size so the sound is reasonably full. I might not be to everyone's taste but I think it's a good sound for talk or music content.
Small hatch covering a micro-USB socket (I think it's actually a slight variant but I don't what it's called) so possibly just for factory programming. 🤷🏻♂️
@@tdcattech Most likely. Quality product, only used in warranty. I'm impressed with the punchy sound of it. Got my black one this week👍🏻 thanks for a great review
There don't seem to be any quality radios out there with a recording function. They are all of questionable quality which means they probably record in mono at 64kbps. Also, I doubt FM recording is an option. If I were doing this, I would use the headphone out into a small portable recorder. It's more messing around so it depends whether you need quality or convenience. bestradios.co.uk/best-dab-radios-record-function/
Specs say 17 hours on DAB for alkaline. It’s perfect on NiMH. This is what I have been using and although the manual says 7 hours life on DAB, I have had much more than this on a set of Eneloops.
Hi TDCatTech. Thank you for complete review. I just bought the blue unit and have some minor issue with volume control. When I turn the volume up (13, 14, 15) and turn the volume control to almost 16 (but still 15 on display), and then I want to turn down the volume, I begin to turn the volume control left, and volume skips for a moment to 16 (sound is a little louder) and then to 15, 14, 13. The problem occurs only when you turn the volume knob to almost some value but previous value is still on display. Have you the same behaviour? Thanks for the answer.
Its a big cheaply made plastic white elephant. Lots of wasted space inside too. A good radio should have MINI HI FI stereo speakers, proper PRO 20-20kHZ 31 band eq, dBuV/ s/n meter, wide FM freq range 60-108Mhz not a useless limited 87.5-108 rubbish, goods sensitivity, radio DSP, SDR interface, in a small thin metal box that can be rack mounted, with near sharp corners, high quality OLED touch screen display, uses back lit silicon rubber controls as well, and a battery that lasts a week not just a few hours. rca AND 3.5mm Line in and out, usb3 A and c/ 192K DAC24BIT mp3/ wav flac, ext 50Ohm SMA antenna, hi fi hp amp, ext spk out with 10w/10w RMS class AB not class D rubbish. dab dab+with Internet radio, Oh and bar graph audio real time LR vu meters. Nothing on the market that good, all ugly plastic consumer rubbish.

Can't disagree with that. It's a shame that everything is about making things cheaply for the masses. I'd love to see that as an option on all radios.
Finaly a GREAT review. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks. I've got the S41D coming in today. I felt the need to complete the set. :-)

Why would we need to update firmware? Sony just put it there to let us guess 😂
Thanks for the review, looks compact, minimal design and sounds good, I’ve just purchased one as a result
Yes. It's a nice radio. I still use mine in the kitchen every day.

How does this compare to Sony XDRV1BTBD?

What would you suggest between XDR-s61d and Roberts Play 20?

Do this have the same hiss on the speaker as the S41D ?
Did you ever find out? I had to return that model precisely because of the hiss and am looking at buying this one
@@GeminiDrive sorry no. I settled for a Pure Elan (non connected). Beyond me a big company as Sony will this slip through development.
Definite early Apple iPod look
Can you plug a Bluetooth receiver into the aux in? Looks like a good radio. Do I need another radio? Will I buy one? Probably!

I have only used it on battery so far. The test done in this video shows 6 seconds for power up.

On this model and also the 41 (smaller model) if you have rechargeables in the radio do they charge when plugged in?
No, it won't charge them. But performance is quite good with rechargeables. Just keep two sets charged and interchange them. That's how I use mine.

No. DAB and FM only.

The sound of this Sony radio model is only mono, isn't it stereo?

Beatiful radio but:
No line Out.
No Handle.
Never thought about the handle as it's a fairly light weight radio. That would be quite a nice addition though.
Not loud enough, no Bluetooth and is pricy. But thank you
It also suffers badly from the standard yellowing on plastic. That’s a shame because a clean white soon looks rough when it has a ‘tar coated’ look. 😊
Yes I was looking for a Radio but isn’t the one. Sony has lost many credit in the past 20 years and still charging like they were on top. Ridiculous 😊
DAB and DAB+ are an absolute joke and on my radio its silent
What’s your main gripe with DAB and DAB+? I’m not disagreeing with you as they are flawed in many ways.
I have to be honest with this radio, it is a junk
Why? Can you give any detail to support your opinion?
