I just bought a FS5 ii for $1.500 in 2024. I’ve previously been working with the FS5 for years, and I’m really looking forward to using the camera again - even though the sensor and autofocus are not up to the current standards. The camera is so versatile, and the button layout and controls are perfect for what I need. Thanks for the video.
Jan 2023 and I use my FS5MII everyday for paid work, image is great both in HD and 4K.
These live stream discussions of 'past' gear is are amazing! and super useful !! Would love to see more!!
Glad you found it useful! We will definitely look to do more.

THAT SHIRT!!!!!!! I love the FS5...
OMGoodness! This is just about a month ago and I was looking for Mr. Chapman's thoughts about the FS5II thinking it was an older video. This is right on time.
Despite being about an old camera, it was a very interesting and entertaining conversation. Well done!
Greetings from Lisbon

15:50 for me the af is a much smaller issue than the codec. 10 bit would do wonders for the log profiles, an h.265 option would enable less compression for similar quality, and 60p would eliminate the need for the less-than-stellar raw implementation
6:18 ... I imagine Alister was grinning like, 'you like my shirt?'
So timely this vid, I'm considering this camera👍
A7III vs fs5m2 would be a good conversation
Thanks young man…just purchased a used FS5 2…could you recommend real good beginning video(s) for learning the physical operation of the camera and also how to shoot for making a feature film to get the cinema look…
Thank you and I subscribed to your channel. Look forward to watch more of your videos.
I love my FS5 it makes things easy
Lightweight and small should not be a checkmark for an FS5 II. You can hold any camera that has that same image quality as an FS5 up high and down low, like a C200 for example.
U can get raw recording on the FS5 M2 with the ninja V
Using the PXW-x200 for daily shooting, still looks pretty good for run and gun.
I'm commenting much later, but I think Alister knew the FX6 was coming out soon. His shirt was a distraction technique.. Lol (Love his shirt btw!)
Says the camera would be bigger with a full frame sensor, then Sony comes out with the FX6 full frame , ND filters built in and autofocus.
love FS5 camera biggest grip is no build-in IS such again with Vintage lenses
One of these streams on the c100 mkii would be very interesting. A 1080p cinema camera still going well in 2020 and what the c100 mkiii may bring or if it's even coming with the c200 at the price point it's at.
I just hate the B-role at the beginning, do you think we live forever?
Nice shirt!
So theoretically, one could take an FS5 v1 and customize a color profile to match S Cinetone. I would like to do this with mine.
How would one go about doing this. A color chart comparison? And guess about adjustments? I guess so.
My sdi port randomly stopped working on my mark ii. So now I cant shoot raw anymore into my Inferno. Given how well Ive taken care of this camera, cant say I recommend this camera to anyone just for that reason alone.
I want that shirt Mr Chapman!
Would love to know which stabilizer you use with the FS5
Alister is wearing a button-up camera test. LOL
hey question, im having an issue with a manual lens on the camera; it's autoexposing and a real pain in the butt. thanksss ya
What do you mean it's autoexposing? You should be able to set the gain, shutter speed, aperture and ND to either automatic or manual adjust.
Does anyone know the best alternative to the FS5 II now in 2022? Still has the beautiful cinema imagery and the practicality for run and gun shooting, but also addresses the pitfalls of the FS5 II especially AF ?
The FX6 is practically a successor to FS5 II, and definitely better auto focus
Very useful/interesting session. What are your views on using UHD 8 bit for HDR 10 production, bearing in mind HDR 10 spec is 10 bit ? Should I use SDI/Shogun for this ?
I shoot with a7iii and deliver in resolve in mp4 h265. In camera profile is hlg3. On my lg c9 is triggering the hdr and looks gorgeous
@WoolFlannel sure, whenever sony will release such mirrorless camera
excelente marca

Share mee a filter plz
I wonder what gimbal Alistair would recommend for the FS5? He mentioned one but forgot the brand!
any recommendations welcome
I'd say RS2 or Crane 3S. I prefer the RS2
@@yueshen9606 I have my tried my FS5 on the RS2 and from what I have noticed, one should use a small light lens. And you would need an adapter to be able to push the camera back further than where the bottom mounts are naturally located.
@@doylelacrua Oh it's great to know that. Personally I haven't tried this set on RS2. I own the crane 3S and because of the extension arm, I can easily balance the FS5 with standard zoom lens and I thought the RS2 would handle it as easy as my crane 3S. The reason I recommended the RS2 is that the Crane 3S is really heavy, like unnecessarily heavy, so I only use it with a ring handle and my easyrig which makes the whole set super big.
19:39 I'm alright with the buffer solution for hfr, it's for fast moving things
I guess Im kinda off topic but do anybody know a good website to watch newly released tv shows online ?
@Bobby Colin I use Flixzone. You can find it on google =)
@Douglas Jude Yea, I have been watching on Flixzone for since march myself :D
@Douglas Jude Thank you, I signed up and it seems like they got a lot of movies there :D I appreciate it !!
@Bobby Colin Glad I could help xD
Test card shirt from BBC wardrobe.
FS5 MK III, X-T3 Sony sensor, Sony A6600 AF, DCI 10 Bit internally. Pancakes sells.
Dude your VO volume is so low
Sony didn't really improve on the things that were actually problems on the original FS5 when they made this. The real problems were the terrible viewfinder and somewhat less terrible but still bad LCD screen.
Also, since this can shoot 4K RAW, why won't Netflix approve it as a primary camera when they do approve the FS7 and FS7 II. I know those cameras can shoot 4K 10-bit, but RAW gives even more color information.
Also, if Netflix approves the FX6, why not the FX3 and a7S III? They have the same sensor.
It seems arbitrary and political to me...like Sony has to specifically ask them to approve a certain camera, but they won't even ask on a less expensive model just to segment them...even if they produce identical images.
There's no way the image coming out of the FS7 is better than the image coming out of the a7S III and FX3.
Well, Netflix approval is about more than just the bit depth. For example, the FS7 is approved like you say, but only XAVC-I. And only with the XDCA back for the time code input. In any other format, and without the XDCA back, the FS7 is technically not approved.
This will also be the reason for the FX6 being approved but not the FX3 and A7S III. They don’t have XAVC-I and they don’t have time code in.

FS5M2 was awful. It left a really bad taste in my mouth after buying it. The only reason i bought an fx9 is because panasonic havent released a new cine camera in ages. Panasonic unlike Sony will extend the life of their camera through firmware updates.
You so salty you came to a review video to talk trash about it, lol. At least state a reason why you think it is awful so it sparks a conversation.
I still wonder, is it so dam difficult Sony to implement Alpha series menu in FS models. The menu is devastating. Some of the worst I ever seen. Ugly and with zero logic. But yes, there is some kind of magic in this camera, and I even sold my FS7 and keep just the FS5 II, while I still hate some aspect of it, most of the things are great,.! Once I did called it useless camera, but I still keep it here with me. Just to clear the confusion, even my BMPCC 4K has a better image quality with MFT sensor, but again, there are some things that captivate me to FS5 MK 2.
How often do you have to go into the menu? Everything has its own button, dial, wheel, or programable button. Aside from syncing clocks and occasionally switching codecs, there shouldn't be a need to be in the menu system that often.
