Update: ONE MILLION VIEWS!!! My 2nd video to hit this mark. Thanks everyone! (11/7/10)
Hi everyone, this is a re-recording of the maple leaf rag with less audio distortion. I hope that made it better. Unfortunately all your kind comments and ratings are gone, sorry!
About the speed: I strived to play it at this specific speed and I think it is appropriate and not excessive. Of course, you're entitled to have your own opinion though.
This piece was learned and recorded in 14 days :)
sheets available at sheetmusicarchi...
One of those songs I wish I could learn but can't so I watch a RUclips video and imagine myself playing it.
John Culp so whats the problem, just practice and one day you will play it
Alex Cook I can't play this as I have small hands and can only just stretch an octave :(
***** Thats ok, I think you could play it anyway
Alex Cook Thanks for the encouragement :)
***** Thanks Andrew, I bought a book of all Scott Joplin's pieces but gave up when I saw the size of the chords! I'll perservere :) I just watched Cory Hall, you're right, it gives me hope that one day I'll be able to play these pieces, thanks :)
I hope the listening audience can appreciate how much work, time and skill it takes to play this rag at this level. Truly a great performance!
i use the sustain pedal on all of the songs. it's great for covering up my mistakes :)
What mistakes? You're the best on RUclips at Scott Joplin!
lol I do the same even when studying, it's a very bad habit I'm trying to erase
It's not just great to see an instrument played well but to see it used to it's absolute maximum here, is incredible. Seriously talented lad on the keys there. He certainly knows his way round a piano :)
I can't see any problem in playing this piece that fast. It increases its energy and it's a personal choice. I like this interpretation :)
Joplin did not want a fast tempo! He said it should be at the tempo that you could comfortably swing from side to side!
The will of the composer is for sure important and choosing to play the piece as Joplin said is a good choice; this doesn't change that if a performance is different and the performer and the listener likes the interpretation it still can be beautiful and acceptable :)
mgbsecteacher Playing this slowly absolutely kills the piece. Joplin even marked this piece as "Tempo di Marcia" which is around 120 bpm.
I've already been through this before either with you or another person. It is too fast--it is not supposed to be saloon music where Kitty and the Marshal are dancing. Play it slowly accentuating the base line!
I played the video again-- too fast!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This was literally perfect. Brought tears to my eyes after listening to version after version of goofy flare and flash by people improvising and losing the purity of form that Joplin wrote. This is exactly how Mrs. Leyva forced me to learn it 40 years ago. The way it was written! Bravo Sir, Bravo!
chocotiger, you inspired me to play Maple Leaf Rag. For the past 6 years, I discover the joy of playing Scott Joplin pieces. Thank you.
If I ever get stranded in the lonely island with a piano...
Years later, and this is still my favorite Maple Leaf Rag video!
Does this young man even know how amazing he is?
1:30 - 2:05 is the trickiest part in my opinion, where I make most mistakes.
I bet mark posted this 9 years ago thinking he wouldn’t ever get verified
That is an incredible performance! Five stars!
anyone who thinks they can do better, not just criticize, PLAY! Lets see how you do!!!!!!! Scott Joplin was an amazing artist! Stop dissing people on performance, post if you can do better!!!!
I agree with you Erin.
I agree too
Nice, Post a video!
that certainly was addictive!!!! :)
TacTundra
hahahaha same here
This is ragtime of all time and the best Scot Joplin composition, I love syncopated music
Listened to this 10 years ago. Still the best.
To anyone who says there's a problem with how he plays it: post a video of you playing it better.
lmao everyone gets rekt
best comment
You don’t need to play a piece to critique how it is played. You think football coaches are as good as the players they teach? No. But they still teach the players the correct techniques. Anyway, this piece is quite easy.
Show us the video of you playing it if it's so easy, you arrogant, useless douchebag.
@@WalterRexAndSofie he said quite easy not so easy idiot
He said quite easy, meaning if you can play the piano, it is not too hard to learn this piece.
The Entertainer should be played slowly but Maple Leaf Rag should be played like this (my opinion)
+Michael Reed I could play both when I was younger and I really loved to play Maple Leaf Rag really fast. Definitely my favorite song!
Mike Read I feel like some parts in the video should’ve been slowed downa bit, but I definitely do think the entertainer and maple leaf should be played fast
There are recordings of Scott himself playing it available online. Not sure how legit they are, but it's a starting point.
@Dylan Morgan
Tell me you're joking?
Scott Joplin composed this song. And what do you mean by 'even he couldn't play it that well'?? He made the song, he can play it however the hell he wants. You have no idea how much willpower it took for me to not swear in that. Fucking kids man.
I'm learning this song right now, and I must say you are very good! Nice and jumpy! Great!!
This is one of my favorite songs by Scott Joplin. I typed up his name and am glad I clicked on your youtube video. I picture myself closing my eyes, and in some bar during the 1800's listening to this kind of music. I love Boogie Piano, and people that are really good at their instruments. Thanks for playing that song.
great piece, but so easy to make odd mistakes I find in these ragtime pieces, not ver easy pieces at all, deceptively difficult but some of the most fun you will ever have on a piano :)
Maple leaf rag is one of the harder pieces of ragtime
@@cdllc1956 No Blue lampshade is by tom brief. That's the most difficult ragtime piece. Tom is also the best ragtime player
@@jollylawyer9999 I meant "one of the harder pieces of Scott Joplin"
There's a lot of rude snobs on here. You watch a great performance someone has uploaded and then dump "too fast" in the comments, because you like the piece a bit slower? Nice, sounds like fun.
Agree, personaly I do think it's too fast but it's still a very enjoyable piece of music and awesome respect to be Albee to play that fast
Wrong! Scott Joplin said himself that most people played Ragtime too quickly. He was quite specific about the tempo marking in his scores. You should listen to the Joshua Rifkin recordings of Joplin's rags.
@@DavideMazzetti Taste in music is subjective. He can play and he plays very well.
I like the emphasis on those two low notes at around 1:32. Duh DUH
Ya, very much agreed. Thats y i like his version best.
Yeah, it stands out very well and I like it too
That was really good!
I am a 13 year old who has been playing piano for 7 years and just finished learning that piece (not to say I am done, but I learned all the parts) and this is really inspiring for me and gives me a goal.
Thank you, and congratulations for your playing!
Sometimes I think I can play the piano... and then I watch videos like this. Well done!!!!
Wow, nearly flawless performance... I noticed you dragged a little at some of the harder parts but given the tempo you played this at I don't blame you. Overall, great job!
"Don't play this piece fast. It is never right to play Ragtime fast."
-Scott Joplin
u are so talented i wish i was like that :))) its like a dream to learn this sheets ))
I am 15 years old and i can play it
@@eliadolfi Yeah I played this when I was 15 or 16. This song is very complicated, but once you've learned it, it's nothing. It's so much fun to play!
Scott Joplin was a genius. I think he would have liked your playing. Much respect, man.
Dude no one plays this like you mate.... Perfect!
No, it is waaaaaaaaayyyyyyyy too fast!
I broke my finger playing this
no way really?! :D
HAHAHAHA that's so funny excellent song tho
He doesn't even use sheet music...amazing. I'm jealous!
He probably learnt it off the sheet music first...
No matter what, it is still fun listening...
once you're proficient at a piece the sheet music would only drag you down if you try to read it
this is how i play, i learn it off of the sheet music, then i can play it all by memory, it works for me.
Bruh as soon as this dude sat down he went it. didnt even take a breath
That's how it should be. Scott Joplin's music is complicated and there is no time to take a breath.
The final section is pretty darn cool, lots you can do and it ties up the themes Joplin explored in the rest of the piece really well!
I first saw this video around 2012. To this day, this is the only version of the song I can come back and listen to. You have masterful control of the keys, and it’s a joy watching you make it look so easy.
My question who would be; how is he able to do two completely different things on each hand at the same time.
Practice.
Yeah it takes lots of practice patience and persistence/ effort good luck
Practice each hand individually, then put it together when you're ready
+Spicy Meatball and play it very slowly at first
Easy - just use your right brain to play with your left hand, and left brain to play with your right
Like a boss
I can play this and I'm still just a little sperm.
i can play this and im not going to be born for another 420 years
Grant Power Johnny Solipsis I just can play this
I can't play this
I can play this. section IV (it is the ending section) is the hardest part for me. Any tips on section IV?
vshah1010 yea I just finished it what’s up?
THANK YOU for playing this song at the correct speed! :)
I learned this song a couple years ago and it's really fun to play. I know it's supposed to be slower, but playing it fast is just so much fun. I actually prefer to play even faster than this guy does. Trust me, playing a song is different than just listening to it.
When you think you're good, there's always an asian guy who help you to relativize...
Lol true that!
I can play this and I'm only a fetus!
And you can write!?! o_O YOU ARE A GENIUS!!
Antoine Do Nascimento that rhymes :D
Mike Read oh and I can’t think of all the times...
that things have rhymed, but there’s no time for that, so don’t whine!
Amazing, but ragtime shouldn't be played at mach speed
it's Ragtime, it's designed to be played at any speed, preferably fast
Scott Jopin marked all his rags as "not fast" or "Tempo di Marcia" (c.84). I agree with *+Troy*
Playing fast takes the feel away
I Agree completely. Joplin wouldn't have instructed "not fast" if he felt his compositions were better fast. -hm looks like mine and Cole Roecker's comments disappeared-
I remember my mom playing this an many other Joplin songs for me on the piano growing up... They always lifted my spirits.
I may be a 90's kid but nothing brings me back like some 1900's Scott Joplin.
A good rendition... A bit too fast but very talented all the same. Thanks for posting.
This put such a big smile on my face! Bravo!
It's great you can play it that fast, but it's actually written a little slower :) - or is that just my noobish way of playing it ;)
It is MUCH slower. Granted people think it sounds more difficult and more 'advanced' at high speeds but common I don't play it that fast and my piano teacher has nicked named me "speed queen"
I agree Rosie!
daaaaaaaaaaaaam
Es que il y a un français ??? Répondez moi s'il vous plaît.
Salut
Enfin
Pourquoi attendre un Français ?
Parce que vu le nombres d'anglais...
This song gives me goosebumps and makes me teary. Scott Joplin was obviously a genius.
best version of this I've seen on youtube. Tons of feeling and dynamics. The rumble of the bass notes. Plus your timing is spot on.
I like
Great piano player but to Joplin's point, when you race through it like this, you lose the beautiful intricacies of the piece. My personal opinion: Playing it this fast puts the emphasis on the musician rather than the composition. The late Joanne Castle, famous from her appearances on Lawrence Welk, is a perfect example. She was brilliant but her style turned all the attention to herself. While I'm no musician, my preference would be to let the composition speak for itself. But that's just me.
Some people just don't feel like playing it slowley X-)
Agreed. The first thing I thought when this started was that it's way too fast. Joplin himself even said rag isn't supposed to be played fast, as in always below 120bpm.
***** I think the piece loses its personality when it is played too fast. I can't help come away thinking that the piano player is more interested in demonstrating his skill than in expressing the music.
Haroldbeavis1969 Omg, when I heard this, I thought it was too slow O_O
Alex Cook Ha! Different strokes.
Ragtime level: Asian
William Sanders I mean it’s not hard
amazing!!! I love it! When I was a child, my grandmother used to play the piano for me and this was one of the songs she played and like this young gentleman, she put her own personality into it. I like it when musicians put their own style into performing a tune. Well done!!
@chocotiger, you render the most brilliant performance of Scott Joplin that I have ever come across. Thank you so much for sharing!
Too FAST... Joplin would want it slow and steady.
Hell no. This is exactly how it should be played.
UntoldAnimations this is almost too fast to swing, though. I think he needs to slow it down a touch
ohdannyboy I guess, but this guy seems very good at piano and the song sounds pretty cool the way he plays it, so why not :3
I completely agree, to each his own!
Rag Time= March Time
Too fast
Agreed
Disagree! It's perfect. Many other Versions are too slow
you wouldn't like Dick Hymans version then...lol
Waaaay too fast...
7 years later and its perfect tempo...
Scott Joplin would be proud!! Excellent job!!!
Man that was good! Joplin himself would be proud! Hats off to you sir, hats off indeed!
Once again, absolutely love it! Brings me back.
Hi sir. You're one of the first people I've seen when looking this song up. When I type up the song name, I think you have the best cover so far. Thanks
Upload it! Young talent should always be cultivated and bragged about on the internet so people can see you! Keep playing!
How could 179 people dislike this talented pianist??? Seriously? Psssshhh...
On your way to 2 million views and very well deserved.
I've been watching this video almost everyday for over two weeks now
Very good performance, led by the right spirit of rag-time. Bravo!
This got me so inspired you can't even imagine. I dropped out playing piano a couple of years ago but after I'm willing to take it over again. Challenge: 1 month and I'll learn this. You're really talented. Keep them coming!
OK lets see you learn this in a month; say by December 31st?
I learned this in less than a week, I had never had piano lessons. It's not that hard if you learn visually. :)
I'm in a similar position, I managed it in a week. It's so fun to learn time just flies by!
Hi there, i accidentally came across one of your videos. You are a really talented pianist, i love the tempos and dynamics you choose to play joplin's pieces, i really enjoyed it. Don't listen to what haters say on comments here, they're probably too jealous of you. You just earned a subscriber and plz keep uploading videos!
Fantastic and Thanks for posting this! ... I've been learning this the last several weeks and yours seems about perfect! ...and per the sheet music "Tempo di marcia" (march tempo)...which seems correct to my ears...
We can debate tempo ad nauseam -- I find this rendition cheerful, fun, upbeat, and quite enjoyable.
Wow. Playing a famous ragtime music at the right speed by memory? That is awesome!
And the coordination you need for this piece is just insane! Especially at the speed he's playing it at.
Scott Joplin would click the like button for sure, well done
Very Well done. I've always wanted to get to work on this song, and I'm finally about to start out. This is the video I come to to remember how it's supposed to sound (tempo & dynamics & such). Keep it up!
Scott Joplin's song sure made me JOLLY and JUMPY and HAPPY!!! :D
You play beautifully and I love the music of Scott Joplin. Thank you for sharing.
You know what ?? I've had this tune going around in my head for years and I didn't know what it was . But now I do .That's a problem solved for me . Thankyou Thankyou Thankyou .
What another fantastically played piece
This rendition isn't too fast at all. It's perfect. I've waited for years to hear it played this perfectly again. Thanks!
Not surprised this had more than 2 million views - the best!
Thanks for sharing. This is a superlative performance.
Great job. Joplin is one of the great(and under mentioned) musical geniuses of all time.
This made my day! Great rendition.
Excellent! I know from experience that ragtime is hard to play. This was as good as any player piano. Thanks for sharing this!
I love the way you play Maple Leaf! Nice job!
I have watched/listened many versions, but your version is the best I could found.
I'm learning to play this, currently I can play the first two parts. Still a lot to do, but I am eager to learn my favourite rag! ;)
so much more style when this guy plays it then the original recording of scott joplin
Dude your 1 million views is cuz I keep watching it on 2 different accounts, over and over. LOL I can't get enough of it.
this makes me cry, you're amazing!
great piece of music and a perfect rendition
i love this song!!! im learning it now. its hard to get used to! great job dude!!!
From one pianist to another, great job! You make it look so damn easy. Ab is the original key and I'm very glad you didn't transpose it.
I like the way you did a recap of the first theme at the end!
You, my friend, ROCK!
i love this song!! play it everyday. you're really good!!
This song took me a whole week to learn and now I memorized it. I am soooo proud of myself
This was great! I got the chills!
Amazing!! I have probably watched this video 20 times haha I am learning this song I"ve got the first two pgs down and the next 2 major parts are my favorites!
@chocotiger Amazing job! I am going to relearn this, but I was never this good at the piece as you are. Also, I enjoyed the fact you walked off as soon as you were done, like "BOOM! Yeah, that just happened."
