- Russia is determined to show it can defy international sanctions over the war in Ukraine.
Fast food giant McDonald's pulled out of Russia in protest at the Ukraine invasion and sold off its restaurants - more than 800 of them - to a Russian businessman, Alexander Govor.
Now the first rebranded alternative outlets have reopened in Moscow. There's a new name: "Vkusno i Tochka" which translates as "Tasty and That's It".
Gone are the Golden Arches, replaced by a stylised letter M, made out of two French fries and a circle for a burger.
But the new owners hope customers won't notice too many differences. They held a press conference in the flagship restaurant on Pushkin Square, where the very first Moscow McDonald's opened 32 years ago.
"Our goal is that our guests do not notice a difference either in quality or ambience," said Oleg Paroyev, CEO of Vkusno i Tochka.

This will entrench capitalism in Russia. USA win this battle. McDonald don't have to pay the staf anymore and they got huge PR win. McDonald win. Giving the Russians no excuse to blame America for obese and unhealthy Russians. Dooming Russian environmental disaster brought on by proliferation fast food supply chain. I can go on but Russia loos so badly. And if MacDonald ever open up again. All they have to do is offer better work opportunity and subsidized prices.
There are like several dozens other burger chains in Russia besides McDonalds both Western ones (BK, KFC, Hesburger, Carls Junior) and local (BlackStar, KetchupBurgers etc.). All are working as usual. So frankly most Russians didnt even care about McDonalds leaving. Frankly I find all the fuss about that in corporate media just hillarious literally like they are desperately trying to find at least some effect of sanctions in Russia.
And another thing - there is a clause in the contract between McDonalds and the new owner of their Russian chain which allows McDonalds to buy back everything they ve sold at their first demand. So its technically a clever way to stay low until things calm down.

It’s just burgers and fries. While living abroad, I rarely went to McDonald’s. Most fast food chains are all the same.
However, sanctions preventing key components in cars and other mechanical equipment will hurt Russians.
Eating McDonalds will not help you achieve full lifespan. Here in Switzerland lifespan is over 90. We stay away from those types of food.

It depends on the business. McDonald's was purely symbolic and withdrew to avoid all the sabotage it might get working with foreign business, but companies like Beoing can hurt it since it isn't cheaply replaced and requires a system you have to actually invest into which Russia does does for the civilian market

Anyway it’s a big step from Soviet era, when we mostly had numbers: Diner № 5, Gastronomy №1… Only cafes and restaurants were assigned names: flowers, trees, birds, rivers, cities… Russian people are very inventive and linguistically gifted - don’t worry they’ll soon come up with the best popular name.
It's not like McDonalds was some incredible name, it's a surname.

While I can't speak to what the situation was leading up to Putin's invasion of Ukraine, McDonald's coming to Russia was a big deal, and at least for a time, it played an important role by providing cheap and reliably safe food.

Unfortunately, I live in Russia now and I feel a lot of influence from the sanctions. The bank where I worked is closed, other banks are laying off employees. In Russia, there is less intellectual work and more physical work. Many original books written in English have risen in price by 3 times. The amount of propaganda has also increased. I wish everyone freedom, prosperity and peace.
I live in Texas, USA and USA isnt all that. Now that im older man id rather have been born in Russia. Its hard for me to move there since getting citizenship is almost impossible.. with the west going completely liberal and nutty id rather be in a traditionally run country with old values like Russia.

Actually if you go to the origins of Mcdonalds, the USA, the food is total crap. Mcdonalds serves better quality to foreign countries because they will pay more and the employees also get a better wage. McDonalds, Wendy's, Burger King...it's all the same so anyone can do it. Since Mcdonalds was kind enough to leave all the restaurants with all the trained employees, it's a no brainer.

McDonalds would have lost billions if it did not sell those stores and no foreigner wanted to buy those stores. Russians were the only people who were prepared to buy the stores.
