Sorry for the sound issues and all the corrections. I had the video pretty much done right when they released the Friday 11/29 beta update.
Also remember that this video is just my opinion. Things like what makes a character "fun" is completely subjective. The goal of this video was to articulate my personal perspective. I never planned on making this, however I felt obligated since Walter's skill tree is probably the one that I had looked forward to the most.
Btw, if you wanted to try playing as a Grass Gator, the link to the mod is in the description.

I know it would be a huge ask of Kiel but imagine walter's slingshot could perform similarly to the Coronacht bow in Hades, if they want to make a ranged character add some skill based mechanics like power shots and the ability to do a dodge roll similar to wheeler.

I wonder if they could maybe make him better in a team if he made like a defense down pellets making all other players deal more damage. The downside would have to be that it's expensive and in order to keep it up he has to keep firing. It would also need to be a solid boost so it outdoes early just joining in an jumping them.

I don't think this is necessarily a problem with Walter and the slingshot, but rather the way that early DST enemies are designed; boring melee kiting mobs. The newer enemies, like Crystal Deerclops and Celestial Champion, are actually really fun when using ranged weapons, its just that earlier bosses and enemies literally have one move.

It's because they were designed around melee combat, outside of darts which were very limited and fire staff which was meant as mostly as a "shoot once to set enemy on fire them fight normally" ranged weapons didn't really exist so everything was designed with just melee in mind, late game bosses especially and especially the post rift bosses were specifically designed with range in mind as ranged weapons are now a norm so bosses either have ranged attacks or they have a way to quickly close the gap between them and the player

While I can agree with your point that ranged combat isn't fun, I personally know several people who really love playing DST but really hate melee combat so much that it breaks their enjoyment of the game. They never seek out bosses, avoid combat where possible, and tend to play characters like Wendy and Maxwell because for what little combat they find themselves in, these characters have mechanics that do it for them. I feel like Walter is going to be really fun for these people, because they get a character who's just no frills. A beefalo from the get-go without the hassle of taming, and a decent way to fight without very much skill requirements - I feel like I could even convince them to come along with me to boss fights with Walter's skill tree There's probably going to be many other people like this out there and honestly if Walter's skill tree makes several aspects of DST more accessible to them then I see it as an absolute win.

    Walter main here.
I think combining the two bravery related Wobby Training together and then adding in extra storage for Wobby would be great. Especially considering you can carry so many rounds now. It could also let you bypass a backpack and have armor on all the time. Walter and Wobby are great at setting up Arenas for bosses but that requires a lot of storage space for transferring everything.
I wish the Bravery skill would also make it where Wobby wouldn't constantly run away when a fight starts. So many times I am trying to get something out of Wobby storage only to have to chase him for a long time or just leave battle all together.
Having the Wobby Skill tree tier 1 costing 0 each and the second tier costing 1 but only having 2 points available would let players have basic Wobby skills but have to pick what to specialize in.
I would very much still want the ability to turn off the Fetch skill when I'm not needing it.
Wobby needs to have right click to feed while in his small form as well.
Wobby should have it's hitbox for players and mobs disabled. So many times Wobby blocks me or simply pushes me into death. Really frustrating.
I to thought the Gunpowder rounds should be able to destroy boulders, trees, and other such objects. Would make them really useful for gathering materials.
I don't think Walter's Slingshot should be nerfed or the rounds just to make him a support character. It is hard enough to run him solo as it is.
Gem rounds overall are definitely a cool idea and could be a general group skill.
The Wetness idea is interesting, I think they could have freeze rounds add wetness on the mob being unfrozen. That would be an interesting addition. Though you could just make water balloons.
The Sticky Grip should just be deleted and it's effect added to the other Grips. It really does just take up and extra insight point for little reason.
I actually really like the Digging Skill and found the Fetch Skill interesting but it kept filling Wobby up with random things in his inventory and it has a slow timer between activations. It just didn't feel useful enough and was giving me extra work of unloading Wobby of items I didn't want him to carry anyways.

    • @princepersona
      @princepersona Месяц назад +1

After playing some more the Gunpowder Rounds are pretty good for the Crab King fight. I really like them. I think unlocking the Gunpowder Rounds should unlock a separate Demolition Round that way the combat mechanics and resource farming mechanics can stay on separate ammo types instead of giving the Gunpowder Rounds the ability destroy structures unintentionally. So hopefully if they do add demolition mechanics it's on a new round. The extra attack range of the Slingshot mods lets you attack the boat towers from a range further than the towers can attack you. Moonglass Shards will work great on clumped up Tentacles as well. I didn't have those at the time so the Gunpowder Rounds were used but did really well. I used one of each gem, the Pearl, and extra Red Gems as I didn't have extra Greens.

  • @Donksy
    @Donksy Месяц назад +37

why didn't they lean more into his boy scout aspects and Woby's abilities, like yeah some more slingshot ammo types are cool but Walter was never a combat character, more an explorer due to not needing to worry about sanity and getting to ride a semi-beefalo early
-give him something that allows for crafting of, and a bonus on using healing items on himself and others,
-or boost his campfire stories to actually have a good incentive for people to gather around,
-or give him specialized traps for netting larger creatures and other effects,
-or allow him to camouflage and lower the attack range of creatures so he can go through caves and moon quay more safely,
-or let him upgrade his pioneer hat with pins from achievements that grant effects,
-or let Woby have a more supportive role by allowing her to dart to low health players and buck them onto her back or passively go to low sanity players and comfort them or have some sort of splashing ability that can heal nearby allies during combat,
-or let Woby gobble up low hp enemies and spit out their drops when big and hungry
so much you can do instead of adding 12 different slingshot upgrades

She doesn't like the risk of combat, and it sometimes gets too fast for her. She'd love to care for Woby and increase her skills, while she was struggling with Beefalo before.
Also, most of playtime isn't even spent in combat in the first place, while your points clearly focus on that. Killing bosses is the peak of DST for me as well, but a lot of people just don't play like that.

If anything, it would give combat-avoidant players a great chance to learn by watching friends fight up close as they themselves contribute more.

idk Lucy the Axe having unlimited durability and woodie having innate chopping speed makes him chief in wood gathering but this is made useless if you know how to make bearger help you. Now this is most useful during the first year before bearger can spawn, but remains useful going forward. Helps kill toadstool. Frankly I think Woodie should have gotten something to make Lucy a real weapon. Call it axe familiarity and each rank boosts Lucy's damage as well as massively boosting damage to treeguard's. This theoretical perk would replace the existing perk that helps you kill treeguard's.

What I don't understand is melee combat is 'Hold F until its time to kite" except.. is the 'fun' factor being able to animation cancel? Because as I see it thats the only difference. You're trading raw DPS for avoiding being in melee range. You still have to kite. But then again, I'm not a power player and tend to take several years to tackle certain bosses. I come here to see a how a good player tackles challenges so that I can maybe learn a trick or two.

    • @furiouscorgi6614

In theory, it's because kiting involves doing back in. Walter holds F, and then runs away, and then holds F. Other characters hold F, run away the absolute minimum, and quickly run back in to get hits, thus having variance based on the enemy, but in long-term ranged combat, the only significant difference between enemies (that don't have their own ranged attacks) is the threshold to start running

You can argue that the combat overall isn't the best, but you can't really say that melee is just as bad as ranged. The near entirety of the combat system is designed around you being in melee, so what mechanics there are, even if you don't find them engaging, are completely removed for 90% of enemies when you use ranged combat. Walter's fearlessness is also removed as a consideration, as well as his sanity drain from getting hit.

Better and more useful wobby (imagine being able to swim with her for at a certain range from coastline, barf to scare monsters and critters, etc).
And finally support scout stuff, badges that walter can craft in order to when worn give slight buff to day to day task. Ornery badge for more damage in a fight, gatherer badge for grabing and taking objects faster, runners badge for more speed. They would take a cloth slot and maybe multiple could be used at once with walter's skills.
Just thinking of the possibility I was ecstatic for a character who doesn't revolve around mass destruction of enemies and more exploration and daily fun.
But I guess klei had other plans... Or just one : more slingshot

My problem with the skilltree its just theres so much perks that doesn't needs to be a perk, basically 2/3 of it are just new ammo, wich they could just give him by a normal update, i also disagree with the support sling thing bc it falls to what is fun, for some ppl facetanking as Wig or Mass boosted HP WX its their game, wich is essentially the same thing as ranged, but walter is not good ranger, and just spamming more ammos locked behind perks is a trash solution.

I’m not trying to say ranged combat is super fun either, but I am saying that your entire point is kind of pointless and your conceptual “new ammo” ideas are also just trying to stop Walter from being an entire new character concept into just a pseudo support weird hybrid character

  • @tylerking9507

I don't really mind the slingshot skills that much. I think that the sling now offers much more utility than before. The way you're talking about it is assuming you're using it only, which I don't really agree with. My main issue with it is the fact that it takes up most of the tree. I want more boy scout esq perks. Things like traps and survival tools would go a long way.
I also like the concept of the badges. I just wish they had more priority and also, y'know didn't suck. The speed skill is something I don't actually mind because it helps woby compete with having a beefalo. The only reason I wouldn't go for it is because woby doesn't have many things that set her apart from a beefalo. If woby had special uses like scaring mobs, digging up crops like saplings, or even something as simple as distracting mobs, would set her apart a lot. The rest of the skills on the board aren't that good tbh.
My main takeaway: There is too much priority on the slingshot, and the woby skills aren't that good.
My idea for fixing it: Make the skills break down into three categories. Boyscout badges, Pet training, and affinity.
The boy scout badges would allow you to make survival items like snares, camouflage, and various other things. This would also allow for better ammo types/crafting efficiency. The pet training skills would be the same idea but with some more active abilities. For example, guard dog training allows walter to command woby to distract or scare enemies, Foraging, allows woby to pick basic resources (i know foraging is already there but its basically a slower pollu rodger hat), and another could be swimming lessons, allows woby to swim across shallow water. There's no limit to the number of skills you can be training for, and instead of needing two skills for a better version, you unlock a "mastery" upon completing it once which allows you to upgrade it again, then upon completing it you get a special ability. I want more active skills than passive ones, which I think would go a long way. I also want more benefits for riding her which can set her apart from beefalos better.
Lastly would be affinity. Instead of just giving you ammo types, it allows woby to protect you from the subsequent mob. Shadow creatures can be scared away by woby with the shadow skill, and the lunar skill makes her more brave, allowing her to not have stagnation with commands.
Hopefully, this just gives more insentive to use woby instead of just a beefalo.
This is all a bit of a ramble but that is my take.

I think it could also be fun allow Walter to interact with different kinds of animals in the game and give him different abilities or items based on the animal he interacts with, turning him into a beast master type of character. This would include grass gator that he can ride for a limited amount of time. They can never be tamed but can be borrowed. Alternatively, they can give Woby a combat form. Woby would be the main source of damage while Walter provides support with slingshot. They could add commands or risk factors to make fighting with Woby less boring.

I think your arguments and suggestions here are valid! ranged combat has an inherent advantage over melee combat, so it requires some sort of downside, which is most effectively found in either lowering dps or increasing resource cost. walter is designed with ranged combat as a core part of his gameplay, which means excessive resource cost would be contradictory to his intent, and since all survivors can already craft expensive yet powerful ranged weapons, it'd effectively just give him a boring damage boost.
since his ranged option must be generally inexpensive, his dps must be lower than melee. he can currently be played EITHER ranged or melee at the player's whim, but there is often always a correct choice. melee for dps, ranged for safety. there's very little synergy between the options for him, and basically no skill expression when using solely his slingshot.
creating synergy between his ranged and melee options (AKA allowing his slingshot to assist melee via debuffs and stuff) creates room for skill expression that encourages the player to dip in and out of melee range to make maximum use of their options. when it comes to using solely his slingshot... it's safer than melee, but worse dps wise. there is inherently no room for skill expression outside of pointless "attack in-tempo!" or "aim for the target!" minigames, which would just be flubber to cover up boring design.
when it comes to woby, though...
there's a lot of potential there. like, a lot. the swimming ability you mentioned is one of them (and a pretty cool one at that). a skill tree inside a skill tree feels weird and overcomplicated, so I'll ride on the thematic take by considering the badges as their own thing, unlocked and individually improved by the original skill tree, but not a skill tree in themselves. I'll consider the current badges: Speed, Bravery, Fetching, Digging, and... Support? I forgot what Support did, so I'll address the other four.
Speed: do something speed-related to improve woby's speed (duh). you might want this for a few different reasons, namely combat and exploration/travel. I'd imagine you'd improve it by committing resources - either time or materials - into riding woby. since time sounds boring and grindy I'll go with crafts (like a saddle, paw pads, etc.), and the insight tree point would unlock better crafts.
Bravery: combat-related. just... let woby attack?! as well??? beefalo are already worse dps wise than survivors, but they're useful due to speed and durability. this would allow you to deal suboptimal damage at no resource cost, and keep you healthy by making woby take the damage for you. he would have a small health pool, like 150, and his attacks would be stronger than pebble rounds, but weaker than gold rounds, maybe. the extra insight point would improve his resilience and damage by a little, and I'd like to add a little ram/tailwhip attack that knocks away smaller creatures, just because. (if this also has crafts for scaling and such, make them expensive! they aren't gonna break, so force the player to make a real investment! this also means they're likely already relying on Bravery, so it's almost like training the badge anyway! this crafting-investment thing is likely a good replacement for grinding meters to full.)
Fetching: it's a QOL mechanic that can also be useful for snatching things in dangerous spots. send woby to dive for the loot as pigs and spiders wage war on each other! pick up floating loot on the ocean without dragging your heavy boat in circles! insight point improves it all. hey, what if there was a hard limit of 1 or 2 woby perks in the insight tree, so you could only have 1 or 2 level 2 badges? hmm... (doesn't need material crafts, but potentially increased storage space? bindles, dragging bags, maybe??)
Digging: this deserves a minigame. something like Hunts, where you have to follow woby somewhere and potentially help by using a shovel to dig up a certain spot, or by cutting down a tree and shoveling the stump, or mining a boulder... an intentional mechanic based on the biome, not just aimless rng fluff. the insight point would make woby better at finding things he's already able to, but would introduce more valuable finds, like gems in the ruins or in graveyards, or moon glass in lunar island's hot spring thingies.
for woby, this could probably work. if you bothered reading this whole thing through, then feel free to offer suggestions, critique, or any feedback at all. critical discussion often leads to problems being recognized and solved, improving the group's understanding, and thereby improving this idea.

Your opinion is always accepted, I agree holding F as ranger with low dps is totally not fun and engaging also I like the idea of some scarce but impactful rounds made from each gem type and several rounds for utility. Although I must add that being ranger is okay especially if you are playing together with Wickerbottom (bee armies), Maxwell (shadow warriors), or Wurt (merm armies) - You can't really hit the boss in melee because it will be very crowded to get close to the boss. There are also some cases which you just wanna kill the bosses easily for loot and move on to do your project in megabase situation. At last, I hope Klei can improve Walter & Woby rework to satisfy all of us.

I just hope Klei could add some sprt of indicator on how full Woby is, now (without mobs) u just have to feel woby slow down or simply guess if u need to feed him more
I also think it could be an idea to give woby health absorption.
Something like for each hit it absorbs it loses hunger (meaning it still would be detrimental and not tanking too much)
And even so, if it’s no consumption or oenalty for Woby by absorbing damage, it does buckle you off after a certain extent- would make the current skill tree a bit viable :)

Honestly at first i wasnt really agreeing because walter not being able to do good damage with the slimgshot just seemed like it would make him kinda bad again, but the alternatives you provided are actually really good and much more interesting utility wise, like walters slingshot rn has no "utility" id say for things outside of combat or for teamates other than the slow down affect, but with the suggestion of things like the gem shots imagine all the things walter could do with them that arent just for combat. Like green gems making enemies drop like double or 50% more loot would give him a skill that actually benefits you for something other than combat

Some examples are a dash (basic) a bark that scares stuff and if the creature cant be scared, make they take more damage, toadstool double jump, you get the idea, i think it would make it way funnier.

  • @Kroban_d4c
    @Kroban_d4c Месяц назад +1

Okay I think this is a nice video and I agree with many of your points, and I do agree that ranged combat is boring right now. But personally I dont think that Walter's skill tree is "bad" at all, Klei definitely added WAY more support things on the slingshot, you can make a build entirely around it, and for the people that still prefers melee combat the slingshot can be used as a unique support that covers many areas, like slows, freeze, aoe damage, safe ranged damage at times (and even "specialized" damage like shockscraps), DoTs, and all those things being aoe now is HUGE. Fuelweaver's fight now is a really good example of how useful these things can be, slows and moonglass make the fight way better, and using slingshot for the hands saves you a lot of time.
Woby is still a question mark for sure, but I trust that they will make her a decent alternative than beefalos, she doesnt necesarily has to attack like them, just be faster, easier to upkeep, dont buck off Walter, and something unique like idk, being able to access her inventory and it being bigger while riding.
And this is just speculating but, I think that considering the addition of more ranged things both post-rift and on characters (willow, gestalt abigail, Maxwell, even Wolfgang) and that even Wigfrid being melee got a charge attack to get closer to enemies, Klei will most certainly add ranged threats atleast post-rift. I mean they kind of already did it but in a more subtle way, like Crystal deerclops, shadow trio, and deadly brightshades. But I guess that for bigger threats they want to finish all skill trees first so its fair for all characters? Idk, but if they are going to add ranged mobs Walter will benefit a lot from that

Great video. I think it makes tons of sense. For your idea about getting good damage, what if Walter was a notetaker of sorts. Defeating monsters and researching them would allow him to know their weak spots for next time. Maybe that's his creature identification badge.
My grief with the skilltree is not really based on combat side of things, but it's more about the theme of his character. Walter is a scout, right? so where are the camping things, the explorer things, or the scout handbook stuff? I've yapped about what they could add too much, but that's the line of my thought.
I think making a compelling gameplay loop is far more important than keeping a consistent theme, but I'd like both if possible.

I feel so bad for Woby lmao
Anyways I feel like typing out a full essay in response to this video so here I go.
Firstly thank you for giving props to Woodie, he's my favorite :)
I had a whole section about what I think of the skill tree, but like, nah nobody needs to know that. Too long; didn't write. I like the skill tree overall, I'd rather it be
I agree that Walter's skill tree is bad, but I don't necessarily think the slingshot being primary DPS is bad, melee combat is *also* rather boring in my opinion, at least, for basic enemies, which are the ones most countered by a slingshot. Bosses, at least the cool ones, have ways of doing stuff even when you're not engaging them in melee. I foresee Klei buffing a bunch of bosses specifically to counter Walter's even longer range with the skill tree, and this will probably be for the best, unless it now requires you to have an even larger speed boost for every boss, then it's worse for everyone.
Anyways scrap all of that because your ideas seem REALLY GOOD!!! The slingshot being a swap to thing is so much more fun than turning off brain and shooting bad man, it would even make basic combat more fun. Walter already feels like a support character so it makes sense if Walter could support *himself* with his slingshot. I love the stinger rounds being damage over time, but that's because I'm biased to damage over time effects. I love gunpowder rounds breaking things, that sounds so fun, and potentially useful for mining marble for marble rounds, since you get 40 goddamn shots when you craft rounds. I love waterballoon rounds! I love using electric weapons! and by that I mean the one electric weapon because I forgot that the other weapons I'm thinking about are modded. I'm neutral on the gem rounds, yellow gem rounds making the enemy glow and give off sanity is my favorite out of all of em. It's like giving your teammates a taste of what it's like to be walter and have no sanity drain... and see in the dark I guess. It also forces walter to get closer to enemies, which is great, because the slingshot is no longer your primary damage source, it fits so well! The extra drop rate idea is also cool but i'd rather it be on accomplished butcher Warly so he can truly become the GOAT, granted I have no idea what green gems would do if not this. The orange gem idea is certainly interesting, but If it was able to turn boss summons against the boss it would probably be too good, since the boss would likely wipe them out for you, and if it couldn't do that, it wouldn't be very good at all, it'd certainly be funny though! I'd use it, lol. Red gems doing extra burning damage is fine, but I feel like that could just be given to gunpowder, and the heat idea works well in winter but it's useless any other time, nothing wrong with being situational though, it's probably for the best, as peak Walter will have 36 different ammo types.
Also the piercing ammo you described is IDENTICAL to Wixie's Moonglass rounds, she's an uncompromsing mode character, a mod I LOVE and play all the time. So I can actually confirm that it would be a horrible ammo type. It's not good in uncomp so it'd be outclassed by any other AOE shot unless it moved REALLY slowly so it could hit the same mob multiple times, and in this case it would probably blow other AOE sources out of the water and be too strong. If this used iridescent gems it would probably be fair game though! That's actually a sick idea, you launch a slow moving iridescent moon that does heavy damage in an area but slowly drifts away, imagine luring a boss along during combat so they're always getting hurt by the moon., that sounds so fun and wacky.
Anyways your ideas are good, you COOKED, like WARLY, the GOAT. I would like to add that if each of these ammunition had longer lasting effects, then the whole getting 40 per craft thing should be replaced with something else, but I suppose all of these effects could be short lasting, and you re-apply them mid combat over and over again with your 40 rounds. That sounds fun and interactive! I like it, though you did mention 20 seconds specifically for the stingers, so maybe that's the only long lasting round? You did mention it being harder to craft, I propose red caps for poison, and maybe some rot, like a booster shot, and maybe this one specifically crafts a fifth as much as all the other ones.
Also thank you for mentioning the extra slow slingshot first shot. It's so stupid.
I'm surprised you didn't mention the pure brilliance rounds supporting YOUR idea of using the slingshot as a support to melee combat, extra free planar per hit! Sound like fun with multiple players each doing an extra 5 planar per hit, mwhehe. Also I like AOE damage, I am sad it requires pure horror :(
Oh boy, onto the Woby ideas. Please don't let Woby swim, it does seem really fun but oh my god the cheese you could do to bosses would be so crazy, actually I take it back, make the entire skill tree woby swim 1, woby swim 2, woby swim advanced paddling. Also this would probably suck without a way to see woby hunger. I propose stealing from uncompromising mode, where Woby's hunger is a stat you can see on your hud, and if she starts starving you lose sanity. Take care of your dog, Walter. This was very non-serious, my genuine opinion is woby being able to swim is so cool and fits Walter really well, as Walter's main function is finding the suspicious marble day 1, now you can also find the lunar island. Yippee!
I really hope this skill tree makes Walter fun, I love his campfire stories but hate playing him. Good video! Hopefully this massive comment boosts engagement.

this was pretty much just: "not fun for me so not good"
im sorry but all of dst combat is lowkey just holding f, moving, then holding f. I don't understand he Walter hate, I think he's fun character, he was always pretty solid and makes an annoying solo champion third phase something I actually want to face.

Yeah, and taking an already bad combat mechanic and getting rid of the one and only intricate aspect about it (the possibility of getting hit while moving/timing the enemy and yourself in order to harmonize) and reducing it to ONLY holding f is braindead.

what are your thoughts on the wendy skill tree? you're the most skilled wendy player i know, so im curious if you see any potential in any of the skills.

I don't play Walter myself and don't remember his skill tree, but after seeing "no damage, only slingshot vs all bosses" with him - I finally understood how f****** broken he is! Just so simple and so overpowered 1 button strategy for all enemies! I think dev's should just remove all stun and slow effects from slingshot, cause now it's such overpowered, that it looks like player uses cheats instead of brain and skill...

He isn’t broken. His no damage can be done with maxwell and a beefalo far easier. (Guile has been trying to make Walter look amazing for a while). Walter is just… boring

Very cool ideas, I agree with slingshot taking the DOT and Special effects direction

Your ideas are definitely better but I still think the tree is a big step in making Walter playable. Slingshot was unusable because of how slow it was. Least it’s a pro now

    personally i'm unhappy with the skill tree because i feel like it focused too hard on the slingshot. if they wanted it to be a powerful weapon, i feel tweaking the damage numbers and still adding the increased pellets per craft would've been good enough, though i also like what you proposed. i just wish they focused more on the fact that he's a boy scout, not the fact that he has a slingshot. i feel like there's a lot of missed potential in the things he could've crafted or done, and i hope they don't release him as he is. especially with the way they're trying to make woby viable compared to beefalo instead of making her into her own thing, oof =w=;;
