I had the privilege of being at the Corries last concert in Glasgow. Even then Roy was looking extremely ill, but his performance was flawless. He is the only person unknown to me personally whose passing caused me genuinely to grieve.
I remember seeing them with my sister in Ayr Town Hall, I must have been about 11/12. They were great and this wonderful song made a lasting impression. I too was really upset when Roy died, he was a great musician, singer, songwriter and from what I gleaned a lovely man.
@@sheenamcleod7892 Agree, on the other recordings of this lovely song it doesn't sound like Scullomvoe either - but can't find what the real word is anywhere online!
Oh that I could hear the birds again In the fields of Ardmorn Where the sun lies over Scullomvoe And the mist silent all around Oh that I could see the bracken red In the hills of Ardmorn And the moss green in between And the rain falling softly down Oh the that I could scent a breeze again Wi' the fields newly turned And the storm cloud high above And the gulls circling all around Oh the that I could hear the birds again In the fields of Ardmorn Where the sun lies over Scullomvoe And the mist silent all around
I love this song you get a picture of some one far from home and longing to be back where he or she was born, back in Scotland perhaps but too old to go back he or she lies dieing in another land or place leaving this earth on just menories
From Ireland only came by chance to listen to the Corrie's the same happened to great Luke Kelly of Dubliners he's buried in glassnevin cemetery Dublin
I've just made a very basic video of Roy's Donald Og from The Long Journey South and posted it on my channel. It's one of only a couple of his still missing from YT.
Agree, similar on a couple of other videos here (around 1987, 88, 89?), no light in the eye, despite his still very moving voice. Sadly the condition can come on over years without knowing.
In the meantime, I have read Ronnie's autobiography. He explains that they are artificial nails - designed to get the maximum out of the strings and save wear and tear on their own fingernails. He said they had to be specially ordered, and it was sometimes hard to get them.
Arkybark yeah it’s actually quite common for guitarists who play a lot of fingerstyle to put on fake acrylic nails as it rips real nails to he over long periods of play. I’m not sure when fake nails became easily accessible as they are just now but Back in corries heyday you can imagine it being difficult to get a hold of them. I personally use fingerpicks that you can just slip on and off easily
alan mckenzie Artificial names would come off in finger picking. They could have their natural nails gel-filled. I've heard of guitarists doing that. But I don't see how they could grip chords with that ( I can't) and they seem to have them on both hands.
+alan mckenzie Contrary to what I thought likely, it seems they did use artificial nails - Ronnie Browne says as much in his autobiography. published this past spring. They must have used super-super-super glue to keep them on, though. Ronnie says they had to order a special kind and panicked when they couldn't get what they needed in time. They only used them on their right hands. In a comment I read on one of the articles in a binder at the Corries exhibit in the Falconer Museum in Forres, they heaved their pints with the left hnad to avoid comments about the nails.
Roy wrote this beautiful song. He sings and plays it beautifully too. He will always be loved and missed.

looked this song up on wikipedia, and there wasn't much, so I think Roy wrote it; makes sense; such a beautiful song!
+jenny55103 Indeed Roy did write it.

One of my favorite Corrie songs Brian Lawrence
Sublime!
Wonderful
Is this the same big guitar heard in the album "the corries in concert 1969" (referred to as the williamson guitar) I've heard people talk about?
Whe are again to scotland and played the corries holiday on the top
Has anyone noticed how bad Roy looks in this video? Is it possible that his brain tumour was already growing?

Sclif richer days
Love the song, love the singer! But does it look like Ronnie is wearing fingernail polish or is that just me? No criticism intended!
jenny55103 Probably just a reflection. You can see that in a lot of their videos.

Rubbish.😠
If you don't like it don't listen. Keep your nasty remarks to yourself. Corrie fans aren't interested in your opinions RIP ROY.
I hate you
And you are nasty
