I recall hearing David Gerrold (the Tribbles writer) somewhere (DVD commentary track, maybe?) talking about how happy he was with how Statner immediately understood how to play that episode. Every single character on the show is playing things completely straight and normal. Except Kirk, who's just in a slow burn the whole freakin' time, and you just _know_ there's some little thing coming up any minute that's just going to make him *explode*.

"She is yours. After a time, you may find that having is not so pleasing a thing after all as wanting. It is not logical, but it is often true." THAT, Jen, is how you deliver a burn, with dry Vulcan wit. Spock is warning Stonn "This ice-cold piece of work is going to mess you up too." The older Vulcan woman was named T'Pau, and there was even a singing group named T'Pau famous for the song "Heart and Soul." Everyone remembers "Mirror, Mirror" for Spock with a beard, but can we take one moment to salute Uhura for rocking those core abdominals of hers? The actor playing the Commodore in "The Doomsday Machine" also played the lawyer that Gregory Peck went up against in the movie "To Kill a Mockingbird." One episode you may want to see, if only to better understand Spock, is "Journey to Babel." featuring Spock's father, Vulcan's Ambassador Sarek, and his mother, a human woman named Amanda. Thank you so much, Jen, and please feel free to go check out strange new episodes you've never seen before.

Watching the bridge Dynamic between Spock and Commodore Decker (interesting 'Decker/Motion Picture' similarity) reminds me of the argument between Spock and Kirk in JJ's concept of Star Trek. While the human rages the vulcan continues his communication of the decision and reason behind it.

It is so much FUN watching a musician fall in love with the scoring on TOS. Your constant comments "Bass clarinet!!" and imitations "Ba-baaaa!!" make these videos for me. For many TOS fans, the music is as much a character as the Enterprise. We have every note of every single cue memorized. Only a dozen or so of episodes had original scores written for them. The rest were scored by editing the existing cues together. It's funny that most of the ones on this Top 10 list had original scores.

The stories in Star Trek were so much more important than the sets or the special effects, but they still did very good with the sets on the special effects, even back in the '60s. Right now, what you're watching is remastered versions so you're not actually seeing what we saw 60 years ago. But it's all good and I'm glad you are discovering it. Wow. Nobody commented on this yet. The Vulcan greeting came from a Jewish Kabbalistic/rabbinical gesture. Leonard Nimoy grew up in a Jewish family. He peaked during a certain part of the service when the rabbi would spread arms towards the congregation. Both hands make that V like gesture, which is actually the form of the Hebrew letter shin. There’s more kabbalistic lore about this gesture.
When this episode was in preparation, Leonard figured that because we’re witnessing the Vulcan culture for the first time, we ought to be introduced to some unique gesture. He remembered the rabbinical gesture and included it. Celia Lovsky couldn’t keep her hand that way for long so they taped the backs of her fingers. She merely raised her hand into the camera shot, as you may notice.

39:29 Try to imagine what Commodore Decker went through. His ship, the _Constellation,_ was going up against a gargantuan, planet-eating, mechanical monster. He didn't think the ship would survive, but they couldn't muster warp power to leave the system or get a transmission to Starfleet. So the crew was evacuated to a planet so he could face the monster without risking their lives... and then the monster ate the planet they had been evacuated to.
Just like that, he went from being the only one at _risk_ to being the only _survivor._ More than 400 lives he was responsible for and he lost them _all._ Now I have tried, many times, to imagine what this would be like. I legitimately can't.

If you'd like to learn more about Spock, I'd suggest Journey to Babel.
Mirror, Mirror is a premise too good for one episode. It shows up again in later series, sometimes as a recurring element.
The Trouble with Tribbles was revisited for an episode of Deep Space Nine, where the crew goes back in time and observes the events. They :"Forest Gumped" the footage and dropped the cast from the 90's into the show from the 60's.
Klingons change in later series as the budget and make up improved. They tried to retcon an explanation of this into one of the later series, but it's best if you pretend not to notice.
Three actors who played Klingons in major roles during the original series came back as the same characters in the updated makeup for an episode of Deep Space Nine.
