A war without a name: France's controversial colonial past in Algeria • FRANCE 24 English

- This year marks the 60th anniversary of the end of a brutal conflict that France only officially recognised as being a war in 1999. Between 1954 and 1962, swords were locked between France and Algeria, with nationalists in the North African country determined to push the colonisers out. In March 1962, along the shores of Lake Geneva, a peace deal was finally reached between ministers and a delegation from Algeria's provisional government. The Evian Accords would eventually result in Algeria's independence, ending 132 years of French rule.

1.5 million Algerian died. Algeria's natural resources were stolen for over a 100 years . we deserve justice.
@siorac69 Bro FLN were fighting them for stealing our ressources and enslaving us
because the Algerians are all saints.
you won the war, and kicked out the French ... what more do you want ?
This war ''without name'' was in fact lasting more than 132 years (1830-1962) of France against Algeria, not the last small final 1954-1962 period of time only. It was conducted by France against the people and the land of Algeria and was an almost permanent succession of collective crimes, war crimes, genocides and crimes against humanity. Almost 2/3 of algerian population (almost 10 millions ) were killed duting this 132 years period of time. More than 80% of the algerian population was despossed from their properties, homes, lands, and were displaced by force. More than 40% of them were abroad as war refugees mainly in Tunisia, in Morrocco and few of them in France. It is one of the bigest tragedies of the 19th and 20th centuries and France tries now to escape recognizing its own colonizalism-related crimes as does any vulgar criminal. But the world has witnessed and is still witnessing. The full responsability is upon France and France alone as the occupying force and the colonialist power.

Do the previous centuries of North African slaving raids into Europe play any part in this moral calculus? Or does history begin with colonialism
@@dantastic7 the reason why France invaded Algeria was the fan incident, Google "l'affaire de l'éventail" and this happened because France refused to pay its debts towards the kingdom of Algiers.
the slavery thing stopped a century before that and was peanuts to the numbers of slaves the Europeans had. and is still a silly excuse to justify a crime that is worse than the holocaust.
They called us terrorists too back then but thanx to allah we foughts. Furiously nd we sacrified nd victory was in our side in the end bd palestine will be free soon or later
These are the people complaining about refugees and immigrants.
Muslims did genocide in Persia, India, Indonesia to form nearly 100% Muslim nations. Still Muslims complain about Islamophobia.
Pamoja milele watu wangu! Afrika moja! Jeshi moja! Pasi moja na sarafu moja!
Millions died.... And no one is there to blame.
A stain for the rest of human history. An embarrassment on an international scale. Human shame.
It was well over a billion dead.
@@grahamt5924 It's not funny
@siorac69 what? I will not blame those who freed me
@@gakkok3030 they racist people
With such intense fighting over so long a period both sides felt they were defending a "country that belonged to THEM" it is unrealistic to think that either side can make ammends. Circumstances just aren't ready for that until all the participants are gone.
honest journalism. even appreciatale from a foreigner' perspective
Hardly
Not even close, they did not mention a single crime committed by France.
The frech still great liars. Tell the truth or keep quiet.
Little off topic reference, while unique on their own, these old world conflicts all had a similar motive or territorial aggrandizement and conquest, and the French-Algerian conflict was similar to the German/Russian-Polish conflict , and similar in their barbarity, the Mexican American war happened under similar events and auspices. The opponents of the Mexican war considered like those colonial conquest of Sikhs, Algerians, Polish, as a crime against humanity, against the profession of civilization and civilized societies, and one that took a bad note from the history of bad governments and European monarchs.
“Our Mexican War is as good, and as bad, as the war of France against the Algerines, - that of the Russians against the Circassians, - and that of the English against the Sikhs. And, if we speak of dismemberment, Poland now stands not alone. But if the period should ever arrive when the largest republic on earth, next to our own, Mexico, and the most hopeful and consistent one, is blotted out of the record of nations and becomes the Poland of the West, we shall stand condemned in the eyes of heaven and our own, as the authors of so tremendous a catastrophe.”
“Considered the most unjust wars ever waged by a stronger nation against a weaker one, a took a bad example from European monarchies”
- Ulysses S Grant, American General in the Mexican War and later President in opposition to the war, he later admitted his regret of the war and supporting it and that if he wasn’t so young and immature, he would have abandoned it altogether
Call a spade a spade then turn the page!
Here before a train-wreck of strange comments, I guess.

And now french people cry about too many algerians in their country. What a comedy.
colonialism and murder are controversial ?! yeah, only in France.
the arabs would have done the same thing if they were able to...they did it to the iberian penisula (spanin and portugal) for a few hundred years...now they crying wolf
france should have never left
they didn’t leave
Those pigs were kicked out
Yes, France should have never left France borders to colonise other lands.
