I live in the UK. I love this knife. It's hard to explain what a wonderful little knife this is until you hold it in your hand. It has really strong retention in the open position even though it is not officially a lock knife. In its natural position while holding this knife with your thumb pressing down there is no way you would put enough pressure on the blade to open it; you would have to want to deliberately want to open it. And it is so light that you forget it is in your pocket. Beautiful.
Interesting review, but I’m afraid you missed out most of Sal’s clever innovations to the spring. If you’ve a minute, try disassembling it and look at the clever way the spring makes it easier to open than to close. The half stop is almost negligible on opening, a dead lock on closing. The visible ‘back-spring’ is actually just a back-spacer, and doesn’t move, whilst a concealed leaf-spring does the work. Also it’s available in S30v and a Salt version too. Personally, though I live in the U.K., I didn’t like this knife, and moved mine on. It’s a wee bit too close to the limit, plus mine was in ‘look everyone’ RED! So I didn’t feel comfortable. Mind you I’ve 200+ other U.K. legals to choose from, without having to dip in to my ‘naughty drawers’ for a lock-knife!
The UKPK is a great little EDC knife. Totally underrated. It’s also the least expensive USA made Spyderco. There’s also LC200N (as someone else mentioned).
I've had my UKPK for years since the 1st production run. Originally developed specifically for the UK Market after requests in 2003 from members of the British Blades Members Forum online , who also helped design it, on the first production run, the first 100 where serial numbered for British Blades members only and were produced with black scales. To answer your comment about the ' stop' , the 1st position stop when closing the blade is a 'step' ground into the back of the Blade pivot
S110v actually seems to have less corrosion issues than bd1n. I live on the coast and s110v really holds up well compared to a lot of other steels. Pete did a corrosion video with s110v and bd1n a few years ago, s110v actually beat bd1n by small amount
If you think the UK has restrictive knife laws, look at Ireland's. You can't have any blade on you in a public place unless you have a good reason for having it (the law provides a short, exhaustive list of what constitutes a good reason, but it's mainly work or recreation, like camping). It basically makes EDCing a knife impossible. Bladeless EDCs only.
I got this in the mystery box giveaway (thank you again Metal). Neat little knife liked it a lot more then I thought I would. Sent it off to a dear friend in Ireland. Yes they have crazy knife laws but they will be able to use it at work.
I have an older serrated one with Gin-1 blade steel. I abused it as often as possible. Never needed to sharpen it. It is a great package / plastic slicer.
I love the shape, thinness, and size of this ukpk. I don’t have locking blade restriction where I live, so I wouldn’t mind if they came out with a locking option, I feel like a back lock or liner lock would make sense
I take my knife laws for granted as well. Here in Oregon, it’s the Wild West. I can carry WHATEVER I WANT. I am very sorry to the people who cannot, and I hope that changes at some point.
To be honest I got a couple in two steels just as a counter move to all the arguments about whats the best lock. Frame locks and linerlocks are old hat and most of all knives that lock and have an extra button or slide mechanism to prevent them from opening in the pocket and are three times as offensive as over doing it with billboarding
Hiiii!! Sorry to bother but DLT trading is getting... Yojimbo 2 cPM 20cv Tan g10 Black coated blade and black hardware It will release today or this week
The forward choil on a slipjoint is genius. Some slipjoints will just close on you and when the blade reaches the halfstop, you already cut yourself. This is impossible with this knife.
If you want to talk about strict laws, talk about France. We are not allowed to carry any knife, anywhere, or even any object that can serve as a weapon even for defense.
That surprised me- when I was young (89-99) France always had weapons shops and pocket knives seemed to be available everywhere. Our school trips were full of kids buying flick knives, butterfly knives, CS gas, stun guns and other things that were impossible to buy in shops in the U.K. Is that a recent law change?
I have this and all I will say is thank god for the half stop! As for when I did give it that slight odd angle and it did what they all do it only wet through half my thumb pad 😂 needles to say t does Come very sharp straight out of the box that’s for sure. I know it was my own fault going slightly over that angle but it just shows how much of a crap law none lacking blades are! A lock is a safety mechanism that the good old UK government thinks it helps stop lunatics running around jabbing each other 🙄. Still a cracking knife though and very nicely executed. Have a beautiful day M_C stay safe and healthy 😘👍
If I understand it correctly, our British brothers have two choices: a blade that can be operated one-handed, but then can’t lock open, or; a blade that can lock open, but can’t be operated one-handed. Either way there’s a 3 inch blade limit, with some kind of pre-authorized official permitted approval for anything over 3 inches. Sal Glesser designed it to meet their needs, and it is actually a pretty cool, lightweight, strong slip joint pocket knife. I have the model that has the talon style blade in CTS-BD1N, and actually appreciate it more than I expected.
In Germany it’s either one hand opening or locking, but not both. Fortunately, we have no limit on blade length. I could theoretically carry a 10 inch slipjoint, but not a Spyderco McBee
Knife crime is a big problem in inner cities here in the UK, annoyingly these types of murders are always gang related and almost always carried out with fixed blades like kitchen knives or machetes so penalising the operation of functional utility knives carried by law abiding people is really inane and irritating but thankfully there is a decent company like spyderco making a solid knife that fits into the legal boundaries for uk carry!
Good knife for German market, tho I would like to see a idk similar version but with a bigger blade since there is not blade limit for folders, they cant be locked if able to be opened with one hand tho
Definitely not a knife I expected to love, but It's pretty much replaced my Mantra 1 which I never expected any knife to do let alone a non-locking FRN model. Great knife.
Police confiscated my UKPK, i tried to explain how they are designed for the uk market but the female officer said its an offensive weapon and threatened to arrest me if i didnt hand it over. She said i need to find a better hobby than collecting daft knives. Is the USA accepting British asylum seekers atm?
Same thing happened to me but they confiscated my CO2 BB gun, a solid metal replica which I had spent hours on detailing. They said if I don’t hand it over they’ll arrest me ! How can they do this? I wanted to get this knife but the whole point is I don’t want it taken if I get caught with it. You might as well walk around with a big old kitchen knife!

@@manuel_winde Yeah I thought France had pretty loose laws on knives etc.

No lock whatsoever, unless you have a "valid reason"
Edit: Not British, but I'm there quite frequently.

One handed opening is absolutely fine in the UK. It's just not allowed to lock or have a blade longer than 3" if you want to carry it.
Cannot edc any kind if lock and it has to be under 3 inches.
Here in Australia we can’t carry any pocket knives, or even have them in our car unless we are going camping.

Great knife.
I've always liked the UKPK, but because I can legally carry locking knives, I carry a Chaparral instead. Almost the same thing, really.
Not quite sure I'd ever get a non-locking knife. I have thought about it. But then I think, "why?"
