- Beeswax is one of the most useful products to come from our bees, but how to clean it up and get out the dirt, bits of propolis and honey? Here I demonstrate an easy method to render it down into beautiful, clean, remarkably useful, beeswax. Clean beeswax can also be turned into numerous value added products. Great video...very informative. I render small amounts as well. I also pour/strain it through a ladies' mesh stocking, which strains out almost all of the junk.
Great tip!
Even better is straining through the stocking to get the large slum, then through a coffee filter to get almost all the solids out.
If you are patient, you don't need boiling water in the water jacket. Beeswax melts at around 145 degrees F, so even 160 degree water will melt it - sooner or later. Using a lower temperature will cause less discoloring of any honey that you want to recover.
If you don't care about the honey, you can put the contaminated wax and plenty of water in the melting container and heat that until the wax melts - then stir it to get most of the honey dissolved into the water.
Looking forward to collecting and utilizing my bees wax as I learn and grow this year! Thank you for the continued education. It is really great to have someone more local to me talking about caring for bees and all the benefits they bring!
Thanks, so many folks ask me how to clean wax I knew this would go down well. Glad you like the videos, cant wat till Spring to really get into the bees!
Make the funnel from the can smaller and keep 99% of stuff out the wax. Thnx for the video. Great way to do on small scale for me! Thnx!
Great idea
Momma gripping at me for using a spoon

I hope that doesn't mean you fell asleep Ian!
If you KNOW, you Know!!!!!
I want to get the final rubber material for the shape design
This is wonderful, thank you. I have various herb-infused oils waiting to become salves and balms which means it's wax time. We have a couple of hives.. The honey has just been harvested and I have some nice amounts of sticky wax mess.. :) Cold you please answer this question for me.. When you mentioned paint-straining bags are the polyester (?) ones safe in the boiling water process, or are you referring to cotton ones, which I've not seen anywhere? Thank you.. this is such a wonderful video :) Best wishes.
I do not know what paint straining bags are made from , when melting wax in boiling water on a small scale I have used pillow cases. But it wastes a lot.
Very interested
What is the difference in lighter and darker bees wax?
It can be how dirty it is with pollen and propolis(fixable) or can be dark from heating too long.(not fixable)
Do you carry the wax molds in your store?
I have some on order!
Where did you get the trays? Thanks!
It was probably Brushy Mountain. Looking round for a new supply that aren't too expensive.
could that boiled honey be fed back to your bees with any issues?
It could be but be careful feeding them BURNT honey it is very bad for them.
