It doesn't really matter if you're 16, 17, 18 or 19 years old. I've met fifteen year olds more mature than some 'adults' in their thirties.
Also, those who join the army at a young age usually have an idea of what they want to do with their life, at least for years to come. The undecided, on the other hand, stay at school or college a little longer or just do what their parents or friends are suggesting they do.
A young army volunteer also needs to have some dedication. There will be your parents, teachers and friends who will try to dissuade you from their plans, especially in times of war.
For young people, the military is an adventure. There are things in life that you're better off doing when you're still a little naive and haven't given the consequences much thought. War is one of those things.
Anyway, after a few weeks in combat, you will probably have matured more than during your last five years in high school.
For us, a soldier's age was never a topic of discussion on the front lines. With one exception: sometimes we made fun of the old people, the “grandparents”, those over thirty.
So a little advice: join the army when you're young.
I have only just seen this comment but i am definitely thinking of joining up after I finish uni (i need this degree to get into the trade i want) :)
