    I remember watching the Kiwi race with workmates. We had several NZers there and were giving them heaps throughout most of the race.
    Oh boy didn't they get their revenge.

    Kiwi for me. 40 lengths behind at 1400m and romped home after weaving through the field. Never raced the track before legendary stuff.

    Kiwi's win was very impressive. Makybe Diva is a legend. In our lifetime with the weight she carried no one will do that again!

    I’m sorry, all these horses are amazing and champions outright. But I believe no horse is better then Phar Lap. He was put under incredible heavy weight and still came thru and won. Can’t beat that horse, he was one of a kind.

    1983 .. Kiwis win won't be beaten ..
    What was remarkable about Mkybdeva wins ..was she last into the Straight was she as far back as kiwi at the 7/800, I thort he'd broken down ..

  • @killmrdarcy4367

    As great as Makybe Diva was, there is no doubt about Kiwi being the top win! For a horse to have won that race after being so far back was miracle stuff, while it's arguable as to whether even Phar Lap could have done that - even with the same weight as Kiwi!

    • @killmrdarcy4367
      @killmrdarcy4367 3 года назад +3

      Thanks for the heart like, while having thought about it, maybe Phar Lap COULD have done that in remembering that he came from second last in his final race, the Agua Caliente Stakes, to win that. ....Kiwi's run nevertheless - and this given that the cup is of course a two mile race - was utterly freakish!

      Their will never be such a consistent horse ever like makybe. You might be forgetting she won the memsie stakes, had a rest then won the turnbull stakes, cox plate then melbourne cup for the third in a row. Doing all 3 races after the other. Champion mare

    I'm calling BS, Kiwi was grazing the paddock on the back straight, admiring the daisy's and takes them all on the front straight by two lengths ! Just watched it real carefully again, and Kiwi ran though the field on the inside then ran almost sideways to the outside, covering extra distance too, mind blown !!

    Kiwi should have been Number 1. All winners including Phar Lap would have struggled to win the Cup the way Kiwi was trained. Running up hills herding sheep. That's how Kiwi was trained for the Cup. First time at Flemington, last at the 600 and made the win look effortless.

    • @jasonlawson1837
      @jasonlawson1837 2 года назад +2

      That was Max Dynamite, and he got that "phenomenal" run by Frankie Dettori shifting out and flattening about half a dozen horses in the process. Criterion (third) would have won by panels if he had gotten out at the top of the straight. Didn't see daylight till the 200m mark. The real run of the race was Gust Of Wind in sixth. Near enough to last on the turn, got flattened by Max Dynamite and was still coming home better than any other runner to only be beaten about 2 lengths. She was the last horse to beat Winx and it's a shame that was her last win. Never came back the same which is a pity

    • @stiubhart5124
      @stiubhart5124 10 месяцев назад

      Actually 3 and that lady achieved it 63 years prior to Sheila Laxon with Ethereal in 2001 , and 75 years before Gai Waterhouse with Fiorente in 2013. Mrs. Edwick Wilhelmina 'Granny' McDonald was the officially professionally licensed Trainer of NZ Horse Catalogue who won the Melbourne Cup in 1938. Problem was even though she was the first ever woman to be issued a horse trainers license , a full 14 years before in 1924 , this was in NZ. Backward , womble headed Australia however didn't seem to be eager to move from Snail speed to Sloth warp drive and favoured the effed up , time honoured system it had in place for Horse Trainers in this country. Sorry , Madam you have a Va Jay Jay , you are not recognised according to our cherished tradition of "Let's play the soggy biscuit game " , NO WOMEN ALLOWED , RECOGNISED AND YOU ARE ALL BANNED , GO AWAY !. Mrs.McDonald therefore was left to either not run her horse or find an alternative , this was what she went with. Her husband Allan was a jockey by trade in NZ and it was he who was granted a temporary trainers license by the V.R.C (Very Rich Cun*boys), he who was to accompany Catalogue across the "Ditch" and he who is recognised "officially in the record books as the winning trainer of Catalogue. (Oddly by sheer coincidence Empire Rose was trained by Sheila Laxon's ex-hubby Laurie Laxon).

    Only an opinion and Kiwi will always make my neck hairs stand up, but the best - must be Carbine - set a weight carrying record in a 38 Horse field and smashed the track record, then went to England and sired Spearmint - English Derby Champion. My personal favourite in the last one Verry Elleegant. No horse ever could have beaten her - the run was superb and the time phenomenal.

    Even though it was 79 years or so before I was born and so , as such obviously (like a vast multitude of others in the same boat) I never saw the race live or the horse ever race live (won't find many today who did... hur , hur , hur 🤔😵‍💫🥴👻) but Carbine's tonking of 38 others on a track no better than an un-mowed bumpy cow paddock (Flemington Racecourse grass was kept down by a mob of sheep as Lawnmowers weren't around back then (1890) - the type like the councils use to do parks and the like that is today , no bowling greens back then , no sir-ee , you bet your sweet bippy). Carbine with 10st,5lb (65.77kg) beat Highborn (2nd) - 6st,8lb (41.73kg) by 2 & 1/2 Lengths & Correze (3rd) - 7st,3lb (45.81 kg) a further length back in race record time (3.28.25) , Carbine was conceding 3st,10.99lb (24.04kg) to Highborn and 3st,2lb (19.96kg) to Correze. Previous race record was set by Dunlop in 1887 (3.28.50) carrying 8st,3lb (52.16kg). Prior to 1900 , only 6 horses broke 3.30 for the 2 miles (Sheet Anchor 1885 - 3.29.50) , (Dunlop 1887 - 3.28.50) , (Carbine 1890 - 3.28.25) , (Malvolio 1891 - 3.29.25 ) , (Auraria 1895 - 3.29.00) , (Newhaven 1896 - 3.28.50) & (The Grafter 1898 - 3.29.75). The Grafter carrying the next highest weight (9st , 2lb - 58.05kg) behind Carbine's 10st , 5lb. Newhaven in 1896 created a weight carrying record for a 3YO (7st,13lb - 50.34kg) over 2 miles and brained his opposition by 6 lengths. Something for the modern Race fan / watcher to take into account is also the Jockey's from the 19th Century into the early 20th mostly rode with long irons and upright in the saddle , not crouched and using shorter irons. For 1 I did see , briefly , as an attendee , roughly standing parallel to the 300m point above on the lawn , never being the tallest chap , I momentarily , while standing on tippy toes , saw that same Kiwi mentioned below back in 1983 and I agree after seeing a replay later , it was a freakishly unbelievable run.

    There have been some great Melbourne Cup runs but I wasn't aware, until I saw this video, that the Cup has only been run in the last 40 years!! Yes, Kiwi's was a great win as were any of Makybe Diva's three great runs and so too Fiorente. But my favourite has to be Rain Lover's first Melbourne Cup - even though I didn't back it. Other excellent runs include Phar lap, Rising Fast, Might and Power, Arwon, Rogan Josh, Doriemus, and At Talaq. There are others, whose names are consigned to history, and many were great runs (eg: Carbine) but trying to rewrite history does no one any good. Thumbs up for good memories but thumbs down for lack of content.
