Why Ram left Sita?
Part 1
Ayodhya is a very conservative kingdom and the ruling family of Raja Dashrath is rather conservative. This can be understood even from the fact that when Ram wins the Swayamavar, Dashrath chooses to go without his queens to conduct the ceremony and bring the brides back home. So basically the women’s safety and security was a very prime concern and could not be risked at any cost. In modern times it would be difficult for us to accept that a wedding can happen without the groom’s mothers presence.
Contrast this with Mithila which was more pro women and where Sita had even received a formal education which was unthinkable in those times.
When Vanvas was given to Rama and Sita also decided to go with him, naturally Kaushalya must not have been happy to see her go. Ram can still go, after all he is a boy. But how can Sita go? So what logic do you think you can possibly give the daughter in law for not going? Naturally she would be told that her safety was a prime concern and the respect of their kingdom so she should not go. Still Sita was adamant. So maybe Kaushalya told her that if she still insists on going and Ram insists on taking her along and if anything bad happens, she is not going to accept a tarnished girl as her daughter in law. Ram and Sita still went along despite this because Ram was confident of protecting Sita and Sita had confidence in Ram. Urmila stayed back perhaps after listening to this condition.
I have reason to believe that Ram was very clear of the fact that mothers’ will not accept Sita after the kidnapping. Yet he went through everything and tried to rescue her because he was worried about her safety. He was already clear in his mind that their married life was now forever destroyed because mothers’ will not accept her but he still had to see her safe. So he raged an entire war and when Sita was finally standing in front of him he told her that she was now free to go wherever she liked and suggested her father’s palace. Sita however would rather die than live apart from Ram or bring such disgrace to her family. So, she orders Lakshman to light a pyre. What is termed as Agni Pariksha is actually Sita’s attempt at ending her life which is cut short by Agni Dev becoming proof of Sita’s chastity and the fire bringing no harm to her.
Now Ram is also delighted. He thinks now that they have proof that Sita is pure, mothers’ will be accepting. So he accepts Sita and they return back. However, nothing goes as planned. What makes you think that a conservative family that had difficulty seeing the queen outside the palace walls would be accepting of Sita’s situation? Kaushalya was adamant. In her opinion she could not have a worse daughter in law.
There is a mention that soon after Ram return from Vanvas, the 3 mothers go on a pilgrimage. That makes no sense. They were dying to see Ram come back. And when he does come back, they just go on a pilgrimage? If they were so fond of the pilgrimage why did they not go before while Ram was away? Why go soon after he has just arrived? Basically it was Kaushalya’s way of saying that she will not live with a girl like Sita. She would rather endure the hardship of pilgrimage in her old age than live in the palace with Sita.
So now Ram is perplexed. If he supports the wife he has to deal with the guilt of his old mothers’ suffering the hardships of pilgrimage. If he supports the mothers then he has to let go of the wife. And Sita will not go back to Mithila under any circumstance. So what choice did he have?
Forcing him into a corner they basically forced him to abandon his wife. So, he asks Lakshman to leave Sita in the forest. Meanwhile Kaushalya is happy to be rid of Sita and keeps pressuring Ram to marry elsewhere. This can be understood from the fact that even when Ashwamegha Yagya was being conducted there also Kaushalya’s focus was again to get Ram remarried. Besides if Kaushalya was so unhappy with Ram’s decision of sending Sita away what was stopping her from correcting it? So basically she was also supportive of this decision.
However Ram is adamant. He cannot force them to accept Sita but they cannot force him to accept anybody else either. Years roll on and Ashwamegha is conducted maybe some 13-14 years later when Luv Kush have grown up somewhat.
Why Ram was not able to move on even 13-14 years after this incident? How come Sita met Valmiki almost as soon as she entered the forest and he offered her his Ashram and also trained Luv Kush beautifully in all arts and warfare? Why was the Ashwamegha yagya conducted? What was the Ashwamegha horse doing loitering outside Valmiki’s ashram when it should have basically been on the highway and not inside a forest?
It is said that Hanuman was following Sita even in the forest and looking after her well being in an adrishya hidden and unnoticed way. However, when Luv Kush are fighting the Ayodhya army and Hanuman turns up he prays to god to know who are the parents of these divine children who have so much strength and valour at such a young age? And immediately he sees Ram and Sita. Knowing who Luv Kush are he refuses to fight and easily gets bound by a rope and sits on the side as a spectator. So Hanuman discovers Luv Kush’s identity during the fight. Hence he was certainly not the one ensuring thier safety all this time. So who was following Sita in an adrishya manner and looking out for her?
Ram was looking out for her. When the work of the Rajya Sabha was over, everybody retired to their families. People in Ayodhya retired to their families and Ram retired to his under disguise. Sita and Luv Kush did not meet him but he was still looking out. He intentionally left Sita effectively at the doorstep of Valmiki because he knew that Valmiki was going to write Ramayana and had held a high place for Sita and would hence treat her well. He was also fully aware of Valmiki’s great abilities as a teacher and knew that his children would not lack an able guru. He was continuously monitoring and was fully aware and confident of Luv Kush’s warship skills too.
The Ashwamegha Yagya was a great ploy. Ram had no abhimaan. He did not do the Rajsuya yagya to get more territory, rather he conducted it with the vision of handing over the kingdom to its rightful heirs. Ram gets a golden Sita made of pure gold installed on his side during the Yagya. It is a message to Ayodhya and to his mother Kaushalya that for him Sita is untarnishable like gold and nobody can take her place. It is the first time that Kaushalya regrets what she has done. When she looks at Lakshman’s and Bharat’s children and says today even my Ram’s sons would have grown up so much. For the first time she understands that Ram is not going to move on. Now she regrets sending Sita away. And perhaps starts showing some signs of reconciling.
Ram intentionally gets the wordings on the Ashwamegha horse installed as a challenge to any Kshatriya who considered himself one. He basically paints it as Raja Ram having a lot of Pride and challenging Kshatriya’s to even give up their respect and accept him as one and all. The wording on the horse very clearly challenges all Kshatriya’s and is not limited to just kings. This technically makes no sense because the purpose of the Ashwamegha Yagya is to gain more territory. So why put a challenge to common Kshatriyas?
And AFTER the Ashwamegha horse has travelled far and wide and collected as much territory as possible, Ram asks the team to set the horse free to roam around Valmiki’s Ashram area. Where he know Luv Kush will see it. Where he also knows that they will capture it because they have no fear of Ram’s power but will not take an insult to their name as kshatriyas. Hence for their self respect they will capture it. And here starts the war. Luv Kush repeatedly tell all claimers of the horse that they are not interested in a fight. They have only captured the horse because they want to speak to Raja Ram. They have some questions to ask him. But Raja Ram does not oblige. Instead of finding a way of answering their questions, he sends basically every single living contender to the throne in a descending order.

Shatrughan, Lakshman, Sugreev, Bharat all come and lose. Hanuman also loses as he gets tied albeit willingly. Only Ram is left. And when Ram comes, he seems to be in a great hurry. He is least bothered about answering their questions. He just says come fight with me. He is basically dying for them to fire the first arrow and for him to fall down unconscious. Because now Luv Kush will legally become the new kings. No questions asked. That is why he sent everybody before, lest someone should challenge Luv Kush later on. And that’s where Valmiki spoils his entire plan. By coming there and stopping Luv Kush. So again he has no choice. His entire plan is failed. Valmiki was also aware of Ram’s plan all along and comes to stop Luv Kush only at last minute because he knows that Sita will never accept this.
Then Ram calls Luv Kush to the Rajya Sabha to sing Ramayana. He has to find another way. He now wants everybody to start liking them and to willingly accept them. However when Luv Kush reveal that they are his sons he asks them to bring their mother to give proof. And that he does get, the ultimate proof. Just no reversing possible this time.
Takeaway? Kaushalya is more guilty for spoiling her son’s life than Kaikeyi ever was. Kaikeyi still sent the stepson away. Kaushalya made her own son’s life miserable because of her narrow minded approach to life.
Ram should have had more courage. This underhand handing the kingdom to the boys was not a very good idea anyway as had it been a success, they would have been labelled as bad people for life.
When two people love each other their hearts are never very far from each other. Ram could make himself invisible but he could not hide the feeling of his presence from Sita. She probably felt him all the time. And then imagine him asking her to give proof in the Rajya Sabha? What must it have felt like? She gave him the ultimate proof because she was sick of his lack of courage. She was sick of the fact that even though he loved her he could not stand up for her even now! He still needed her to prove something.
We need to stand up in life for all that we believe in. Ram could have found a better solution to this problem. He could have involved gurus and learned people. He could have taken Kaushalya to Ashoka Vatika in Lanka and had her speak with the Rakshasis who were guarding Sita. But the approach he took was not correct. Sita got abandoned. She broke away from all relations. She got labelled as the bad girl. She lived a minimal hard life of struggles. And he kept giving her hope that he would come back with his continuous presence when he just could never find the courage.
So he never actually left Sita but he did not even know how to be with her either.

Some people say that bhagwan Ram sent sita mata to ashram situated in jungle(forest).
But sita mata got to stay with Luv & kush during their childhood ( in earlier days rajkumar (prince) were used to send to rishi ashram for learning/education.
In a way Luv and Kush got their mother's love along with guruji/rishi krupa
When the life of Lord Rama is used as an example of an exemplary life that should be emulated, then doesn't the act of abandoning Mother Sita under the circumstances risk the way mankind will act and justify their evil behavior????
