Hi Shay! From an MC perspective, I stay away from the typical wedding cliches such as "ladies and gentlemen" or even "friends and family." Also stay away from "newlyweds" and "put your hands together" it sounds too formal and mechanical. I'll give you an example: "Good evening and welcome to Anecia and Blakes WEDDING RECEPTION (you build up your volume along the way) this also commands an applause without saying "put your hands together or let's give it up for..." so you can say less on the mic and everyone will still give an applause. When it comes to the wedding party for this video: "And now it's my pleasure to welcome the wedding party starting with the bridesmaids....(then they settle)...and now the groomsmen. Just a sample of a way you could change it up and maybe practice that and see how it works. Also, speak slower to the point to where if it sounds too slow, then you're doing it right. There's a lot of reverb in big spaces plus people are talking so it gives the guests time to catch up with what you're saying. So much more input I could give to help you but I'll just comment to this video in particular.
Brent, thank you so much for this amazing advice!! The main reason I uploaded gig logs (my first one was the one before this) was to get feedback and pointers about MCing and this tips are incredible!! I’ve known that I needed to get away from the cliches and “crutch” phrases I was overusing, but I never knew what to replace it with. These examples you took the time to write out for me are so incredibly helpful!! Reading your comment and thinking about professional MCs like at sporting events or TV shows, I realized how they never say make some noise etc, and just let their tone and timing do the work!! I am going to start incorporating this in my next event where I have MC duties, and the goal will be each time to use a cliche phrase less and less. Again thank you so much for this incredibly helpful comment!! I appreciate you!

Dude, it was super nice. This was his first time so I was mostly teaching, but it definitely helped cut down on some of the labor I had to do, and eventually, I could have him do the music while I do the intros. Since he’s not available for every gig that I do, the hard part is going to be having enough guys to have a rotation so that I can have someone at every event, but maybe I’ll slowly build up to that. Looking forward to seeing your next one bro!!

-Careful with "Aaalright..." It's a habit that I'm glad I broke 😂 "ladies & gentlemen" can get easily overused too.
-Check out Justin the DJ and maybe Nate Acosta? I think they have a podium with a facade behind them. The best of both worlds.
-Having an assistant is really nice for sure!

Thanks for watching man! Hahaha dude I know it’s a crutch I use and I need to switch up. Its definitely more for me to start talking, get everyone’s attention and kind of let me pause before making the actual announcement. I do feel like there are times that having some general phrase helps like when making the first announcement or when trying to get everyone’s attention before we start, so I’ve tried things like friends and family, and party people too just to switch it up. Do you have any go to phrases as like attention grabbers??
And 🎯🎯 the facade behind the booth is definitely a look I’ve considered and we’re actually going to be talking about tonight on our podcast! I personally think it looks good and gives space for bags and assistants to put stuff.

@@MrMaui38 It's been a minute, but I think I try to limit the attention grabbing phrases to the beginning of a section. If I have people's attention I think I try to avoid them. I think one I do is like "...ladiesandgentlemen, Ladies. And. Gentlemen!" (Kinda growing in volume and slowing down for the second one.) I think also try and have it be kind of a conversation where I'm asking or telling them that it's time to move on. Trivia hosting has been helpful in learning how to grab people's attention. Let the moment breathe, don't feel like you need to rush into the announcement and adjust as needed.
I haven't had many weddings recently, I am in the middle of switching companies. Next year I should be super busy though. I have been assisting and there's a gig log coming out that I made for the new company soon!
@@Ciulla55 I like that idea of saying ladies and gentlemen with a pause and letting that sort of resonate! Also as I’m learning, MCing and hosting really is a skill that has to be practiced so Trivia hosting or any kind of MCing is really great practice!

If it’s something you feel like you can share online, I’d be interested in hearing about the different factors that you considered when making the switch. Maybe even you can make a video out of it! @@DjMixstyles Nope not at all! I have the 300W version and it can power that setup (speaker, mixer and mic receiver) for 4 hours if not longer no problem.
Another great gig log!! Your MC skills have already gotten way better!! That room looked HUGE!! Your setup looks clean with the facade! Yeah seemed like the moving heads are not needed. The way we do the podium style booth is podium in front. Facade in back behind you and you assistant can sit back there with your cases and stuff. But we never sit down at events so yeah.

I think you read my mind with this gig log, because the very next one I uploaded with the façade in the back! I personally agree, and think that look works great so that there’s some space to put things and to hang out if there’s any downtime. And that’s a big *if* 🤣🤣
I've done a bunch of things with batteries over the years and I actually prefer devices do not have batteries.
especially when it's not really needed for its function and all the manufacturers think built-in batteries need to be glued in and the whole thing glued shut and nothings repairable in any way.
Things like laptops, cameras and recorders makes sense where you want carryover power.
Pretty much anything else an external makes more sense as I can swap that.
So I could have multiple sets of batteries when one gets low pop it off put a new one on take the other one put it on the charger. And if battery technology improves which I think it's going to very soon all one hast to do is get a different power station or for the more technically inclined swap the battery.
In my case I literally bought a 12v battery, a battery box, an inverter and some Velcro.
Worked out so well I want to get another battery. I have a lot of sealed lead acid batteries that are starting to die this year, and moving to lithium brings a large capacity increase.
Another benefit is three weeks ago I went to pull out my battery for a concert, I use it to set up my virtual mixing console, a computer and touchscreen monitor without having to run a cord in a area which would be very awkward with no way to avoid possibly tripping folks. Unfortunately I forgot to charge it! But because the computer is a small form factor Lenovo cube and I have a Square to USB type C adapter. All I had to do was grab my older battery pack and plug the cigarette adapter into it instead and I was good to go. As my Second backup option I have one of those power banks that can run a laptop but couldn't remember which bag I put it in and couldn't find it in the car. But that's what option 3 is for, good old-fashioned sealed lead acid batteries, I have 3x8AHr batteries in parallel and I was surprisingly able to run a Desktop computer and CRT monitor for far longer than I ever thought I was going to be able to ( I feel like that needs context. I was contacted by somebody who wanted a Windows 98 computer and I wasn't able to set it up so I was literally doing that in the middle of the farmers market and then they never came ).
@@imark7777777 I totally agree about having a separate external battery pack you could easily swap out or could use with multiple devices!! Facade is a great idea.... I still rock one too. I'm not a bog fan of podium tables they take up too much room and my cargo space is limited.

The uplights look great.
The wash lights look great.
The facade fit perfect with the style of the hall.
It would be great to have the ceremony equipment in a rack. Speeds up setup.
Left right speaker placement would be better than one for ceremonies. I would have placed the speakers behind any of the curtains near the front of the reception.
Rais the moving head lights higher next time.
Side fill would definitely work better with a hall that large or simply place the speakers closer to the dance floor area and away from you and get a monitor for yourself. It's not only the looks of the equipment but how it functions best. Spreading the speakers along that long wall or adding side fill speakers makes for a cleaner Ness forced sound system and fills the hall equally rather than blasting everyone I. The front row to compensate for people in the rear.

@@asc3designs thanks for watching! No sub yet…I’m usually by myself (except this gig) and use a sedan so haven’t been able to fit a sub. Part of the reason I bought these HDM45s was because the bass is as good as I can get from two tops, but definitely no replacement for a sub!
I actually just started using a facade past few gigs and have gotten compliments on my setup 😊

I don't do a lot of weddings but one thing is for sure wedding planners have a lot in common with flat earth or's they think the laws of physics don't apply. I'm sure I would've been annoyed having the speaker behind me as a guest hearing it from both sides with the delay but maybe it was small enough that it wasn't bad.
as somebody for many many years loaded all my Sound equipment out of containers and stacked in cabled, for the two times I've used my equipment this year it's been really nice to have it all ready to go in a rack case.
I've been to a few weddings where there was more than one person with the DJ and depending on what they're doing behind the thing it looks fine as long as they're not like front and center but even then it's still usually OK.
Must be nice what's this assistant thing tell me more, how do you find them, what do they do, etc.

When it comes to the assistant, I had the same questions as you haha and was always unsure how to get reliable help that I can trust. In my case, this was a college kid who reached out to me because he was interested in DJing and so I talked to him and brought him along. I showed him the ropes, and he helped me load unload, set up breakdown and took video during the event as well. Otherwise, I’ve heard of people bringing friends, family members etc that are interested and paying them. The hard part is finding people that can reliably come with you on weekends when you have events Other than that, I think maybe posting a job post on Facebook or Craigslist saying you’re looking for a DJ asssistant?? Haha I’ve never tried that myself.

I do more live Sound and I'm sort of fighting the market rate in the area which is low. i almost had one last year, a local nonprofit organization bought a system off of somebody and started doing Friday concerts for 3 months. The guy who sold the system was supposed to train a kid who is interested and he would be ready by the first concert… Did that come true absolutely not. Somebody was a little big headed and liked to talk a lot. First concert was my normal band acoustic Bluegrass they couldn't hear anything on stage and it wasn't until halfway through the second set we were able to hear the vocals out front. He complained that they needed to get with the times and have electric instruments and was pretty much mixing a rock band. Needless to say he was very shortly replaced with me and the kid wasn't trained all that well.
Thinking I just gained an apprentice, it was great because there was a couple concerts that I wasn't gonna be able to make and then there was a falling out with him and the Director I think over wanting to get paid way too much and I ended up having to do the calendar shuffle to get the concert in.
I've seen a few DJs that have gone the all white route with either white speakers or things that can go over the speakers that definitely helps.
And since you were primarily using wireless mics back of the room probably worked out pretty well for that one.
My thoughts would be set up all equipment in the back or side although it is definitely nice to not have to fight the meat bags to get the RF to the receivers.
then with that thin speaker I think it would've fit very well covered with some white fabric upfront.
I might've had a conversation of well I'm thinking this this and this and then speaker up there camouflaged, let me partially set up it and then tell me what you think as it's not that hard to move before I connect it. but sometimes you have to build that relationship and trust before you can even get that far.
Looks like that's a tent? I would've went for one of the corners. Would've had a decent spread in the direction that people are looking well also not being terribly close to cause feedback.
Yeah definitely in that boat as well, I am very extremely patient and will work around just about almost anything which usually gives me leeway with stuff that I can't.
Oh yeah and once you get your assistant chained oops darn auto correct trained-up (yes that's the word ha ha totally) a bit and start tag teaming it it won't look as weird. Have them do a couple of announcements etc.

Greatjob buddy! Setup looks very clean. Theres a lot of people out there that bash on the facade but then u look at some of their earlier videos and they used them too. I too have the face and furniture and it just depends on the situation you’ll be in. Great job, keep up the good work!

You’ll absolutely love it to have as an option to use man, and I’m glad my video on the stand helped! It’s a great stand and I have two now. I’m even thinking about spray painting or using white Plasti dip to spray paint that stand white, so it matches the booth.

And I 100% agree on the moving heads lol I wasn't going to use them at all because the facade was blocking them. I wanted to show my new assistant how I put them up and then just decided to keep them going since we had done the work setting em up anyways. But definitely, thats an example of just because you have something, doesn't mean you have to use it every event!

I usually introduce the "bridal party" . Here are your groomsmen and bridesmaids sounds clunky. Keep it up. Everything looks really professional and good that you are looking to learn. So many djs think they know it all and that's sad. I've been at for over 20 years and I'm still learning.

Hey Shay! Nice gig log man, thanks for sharing. I always thought about the voiceover method, but then I think I’d never remember what to say if I don’t say it there and then lol. But still. nicely done.
The facade thing - my events are different, people are expecting me to roll with several of my guys so having my guys around me is natural, and essential to manage requests and drunks. But for western events, if I had a nice stand like yours, I’d opt to place the facade behind me so the guys can chill back there, along with any rack systems, bags etc. It’s a nice clean look. But still, I’m glad you’re rocking with some help now, it makes a huge difference.
And yes, when I’m doing entrances, I do wait for them the settle in and do their dancemoves, walking etc. It just allows them to have the focus time they’re wanting, which is the whole reason for an entrance, right? I think you’re timing looked good though!
Your lighting came out nice! As you mentioned, those baby moving heads were too low, but no big deal I guess - You’ll remember for next time.
When you’re looking to learn DMX, let me know if you need any help with it. As you know, I use a WMX1 and I could not recommend it enough! It’s a brilliant controller! But yes, when you’re ready, moving away from the ‘lights on top of speakers, attached to poles’ type of layout and have dedicated stands for the lights. It’ll make your setups appear much more professional, and spaced out nicely.

Its definitely nice having some help for the first time and managing that! I do like the idea of having the facade behind. I think bringing the facade, and then seeing what will work best for each party I do will probably be my next move.
Haha you are absolutely right that the stands/ totems for lighting is the move man. I'll never be at your level, but that will be my next step on my path! Seriously man, your videos have shown me the potential and impact of lighting, and made me start to think about it much more seriously!!

Very nice gig log, I use thise wash efx with the wolf mix dmx controller and. Donner dangles, easy to use, work with my uplights and moving heads also, look into it

The wedding reception I did this past weekend wanted each song for the bridesmaids and groomsman so had to mix for about 6 groups of 2 and the danced out and last was the mr and Mrs! Was badass I guess everyone is different in taste

What RCF model of tops and subs did you use?
I use the RCF HDM45 for my tops and don’t have any subs for now..looking into what would be the best. These HDM 45s are so powerful though, that most other people that have them say that they need two 18s each per each HDM45 for there to be enough bass to keep up with that the HDM45s put out. Let me know if you have any suggestions!
@@MrMaui38 - You mean to keep up with the bass coming from the HDM45s?
@@mosszaphod to keep up with the highs and mids that come out of the HDM45s! The horn in the HDM45s is super powerful. The bass that comes out of it is better than other 15 inch speakers, but definitely does not replace a sub.

Professional man, excellent all around. No one critiques DJs more than other DJs. Guests are just there to chill eat drink socialize and dance (sometimes not even dance lol) idk I’ve been blessed to have very easy going crowds and bridal parties over the years. I’ve gotten more and more comfortable talking regularly over the mic, casual sometimes comedic, sometimes unpredictable, just having fun, gives them some of my personality as a way to make personal connections with people. Great work man enjoy !

if you EVER get hired for a 90s style party but don't wanna get actual records, I would recommend a Numark CDMIX2. it is insanely easy to use and you can even have stutter options fpr CDs. sorry if im being a bit nerdy here 😁
