I believe there are only two Clifton Fadiman-hosted WML episodes, so this is quite unique, very nice post.

Always check to see what the mystery guest was most famous for and was pleasantly surprised to see Jane Powell is still with us as is her husband Dicky Moore.

He also ran a TV station for Aquinas College, also in Grand Rapids, that was in 1956

The second guest should have appeared on "The Name's the Same", which Fadiman also hosted.

I don't find Fadiman annoying at all. Gracious and erudite rather. Looking him up in Wikipedia yields an interesting theory. The early TV producers were looking for intellectuals to host and participate in these shows because TV sets were expensive. That doesn't mean only the wealthy are more educated but there is a statistical correlation between wealth and education. This may explain why TV seems more intellectual back in the early days.

Sorry but the show is dead without John Daly, like pop without fizz, pizza without cheese. I wonder if Mr Cerfs children had to battle the old man just to listen to rock and roll over the radio. He is obsessed with insuring that any guests with a connection to music, reveal that they too hate the music that took over the world.

Fadiman says Dallas, that's a big town. Boy would they be surprised just how big in Nov. 1963.

it is indeed an interesting theory, and the look and feel as well as the people and situations of early t.v. is more intellectual and somehow subtler. i think 'bewitched' is another case in point: the early episodes were sophisticated and the comedy was done with finesse; later episodes, the ones in color, became cartoonish and broad.... i guess more joe sixpacks and sally housecoats were getting t.v.'s, not to put too fine a point on it.
i liked fadiman too, but, he was no john charles daly.

So... why is this a rare episode? It's gotten just as much air time as all the other episodes. Are you trying to say that someone hosting other than Mr. Daly is a rare occurrence? That would make more sense. Rare episode lol

the bad part of this show was the whistling at girls. (and Liberace) should have been stopped. next thing you know people would be twerking in front of the camera.

Dana Wynter was a hottie and you couldn't shake a stick at Jane Powell either. Mr. Daley would have a more intimate "conference" with Jane too.
When there is a different babe I have to check up on her. Miss Wynter worked with Rock Hudson, Sidney Poitier, Robert Wagner, James Cagney, Danny Kaye, George C. Scott, Invasion of the Body Snatchers (thats what I remembered, bit of a horror fan) She was quite lovely in Airport too.
Passed away of a congestive heart failure on May 5, 2011 at 79.

Of course he isn't, he's a substitute. By this time John had years of experience doing this job, this guy only one day. It's unfair to compare the two.
