The Power of Plasma Donation Animation

- Many patients with rare and genetic disorders are relying on YOU. That's because blood contains plasma, a key ingredient in the treatments they need to survive...and the only way to get source plasma is from healthy donors. Plasma is the protein-rich, gold-colored liquid portion of blood that remains after red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets and other cellular components are removed. It all starts when a donor visits one of the more than 700 source plasma donation centers in North America and Europe. First, the donor will check in at reception, presenting a government issued ID with proof of current address. The donor then takes a few minutes to complete a health history questionnaire. Then, they must pass a health screening prior to each donation before being able to donate. Source plasma donors in the United States and some European countries are given a modest compensation for their time and travel. Plasma, which is used to make lifesaving plasma protein therapies, is collected through a process known as plasmapheresis.During this process, an automated device is used to separate the plasma from the blood. Once the plasma is collected, red blood cells and other components are returned to the donor. After the plasma is collected, it is tested for suitability for further manufacture, frozen, and then held for 60 days prior to pooling. It must pass these rigorous steps to be pooled with other plasma donations. Each plasma pool is further tested before the protein extraction process begins. During this process, lifesaving proteins are extracted from the plasma. The separated, specific proteins are purified and adjusted for optimal dosage before becoming the finished therapeutic product. Each source plasma donation is tracked the entire time--from the donation all the way to the final therapy. It is essential that healthy people donate plasma because every year it takes approximately 130 plasma donations to treat one person with a primary immune deficiency… 900 donations to treat one person with alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency…and 1200 donations to treat one person with hemophilia. Plasma donation is a process that saves lives. And it’s all starts with YOU. Thank you, plasma donors! My blood type is AB. A universal recipient and universal plasma donor. Wow. I wonder what this means?
you're not a universal donor, that would be blood type o-, AB can only donor to AB but receive from all blood types. O can donate to all bloodtypes but receive only from o
Wow,so useful . Thank u
Donated before @ UNITED BLOOD BANK 🏦 💪 😎 AND DRINK PLENTY OF FLUIDS !!!
I found out I'm AB + but I feel so squimish I think this is why I never could make it in the hospital industry.
Don’t be Squamish! I read people with AB blood type are the humanist. They are meant to be loving and gentle to people naturally. They are heroes and naturally sympathize with others. They are known to work in humanitarian places.

Can we donate blood, platelet and bone marrow at the same time. If not, what is the sequence of gap between each donation?
No but you should call your local donation center to see if/when you can donate. I know it's 8 weeks from last blood cell donation.
What are the side effects for the donor and is it similar to donating blood?
No
This your blood comes back. It separates plasma from blood so you're not lightheaded after.
No side effects whatsoever, not even pain, they're just taking plasma and returning blood as whole. It's safe, and will save lives
It's different for everyone. I've been donating about a year twice a week. I'm always wiped out after donating. Just tired. It is different from cell donation because you won't feel light headed unless you do something to thin your blood like smoke and drink right after. Some people do pass out during donation but I think that's mostly a mind over matter or poor preparation. Be WELL hydrated when you go in. I only have pain in my arm if they wrap my gauze too tight in which case you can rewrap it but do keep it on for at least an hour after. If it hurts rewrap but make sure it's still tight worst case just hold pressure on the injection site. Ask for a cross wrap instead of a straight wrap that helps.
@@dayfiremystic thanks for this. im going to donate today for the first time and I'm nervous lol

About a week after. It's dependent on your local legislation.
@@artuselias actually it's 8 weeks after cell donation and twice in 7 days for plasma. Science :)
@@dayfiremystic
As I mentioned, every country has its own rules.
What do you mean by "cell donation"?
@@artuselias In Poland it's a month after blood donation or two weeks after previous plasma donation. That's interesting in terms of differences between various countries.
