Letting Gus back to wild is basically releasing a kid with no survival skill to died or simply a death sentence
Imagine people who have been in prison for a long time having trouble adjusting to the outside world. Not saying zoos are prisons (unless they're corrupt zoos), but that bear has been basically hand fed all its life and doesn't have any knowledge or skills from the wild, despite being an apex predator. Also, the animals in most zoos are rescues, not some wild animal from the wild. Maybe that's how they used to do it, but many zoos are basically second homes for animals that would not survive in the wild. It's like do people expect the bear to be released into the wild and he'll find some bears that will take him in?

Not to mention that animals who live in captivity aren’t afraid of humans and if they were released most likely would just walk up to the first person they saw and either attack them or get shot

Bears do not have the same type of imagination we do, nor are they sapient. They are sentient, and have certain types of emotion, but they cannot wish for things the same way a human does.
In elementary school, a student had scabies and brought it to school where the majority caught it(including me) and let me say the itching never stopped and got worse every second.
Most zoo animals are rescues, so Gus probably wouldn't have made it in the wild.

As a Puerto Rican I have to take this opportunity to give out a brief reminder: The Chupacabras isn't Mexican, it's Puerto Rican, the monster is not a coyote with a disease. Coyotes don't exist in Puerto Rico so that bit he mentioned is completely bogus! XD
As a Latina who was born and raised in Mexico. What he say isn’t bogus. Cyupacrabras is also well known urban legend in Mexico. Also in Puerto Rican, you guys have dogs back then, which have started the legend of cyupacrabras. Since you guys use to have foxes/coyotes until 2000 .

An animal from the Zoo has nearly no chance to survive in the wild, it doesn't have the skills needed to survive, because it was kept in the zoo where you get fed without having to hunt etc. so no it isn't stupid
Animals in zoos aren't there purely for our amusement, some are not fit to survive in the wild due to albinism or are in a breeding program to help the species.
