It is not true that the idea of borders came with colonialists (colonisers were just inaccurate in many cases. Wars in Africa were actually in part, about territorial protection (or territory expansion). That is why we have different tribes (tribe is a territorial element). Even before colonialism the movement was controlled. Strangers were assessed to determine the intent of their visits. People didn't just live anywhere or anyhow. Control is important.
