This part of thr event was a little confusing and I wasn't sure to put an over 18 restriction on it or not. I did then changed it to kid friendly
In this pre show marketing session, it is a beer although it is non alcoholic that was being promoted and maketed on stage before the next kids chemistry pantomine . This beer produced was funded by the UNSW start up grants and it was produced to mark the univeristy's 75th anniversiary. This event was promoted as a non alcoholic event as there were kids and adults present however the bar open although I think they only served this non alcoholic beer and possibly water. Tables were set up outside the central stage arena in the foyer with a help yourself to a sample of this non alcoholic beer - a whole cold can of it even allowing to take a few of them It's free. It was using this SciFest to taste test it. So I am keeping mine and was going to get a second can to taste but my bag was too heavy and I still had groceries to get on my way home. I did hear a few comments though. A father was inquiring about the beer and grabbing a sample off the table when his kid started asking questions about it. I think he wanted a taste of it.Although it is alcohol free, it is still not a good idea to let kids taste it as this may promote or encourage drinking in the future - real drinking. The second comment I heard from another father who actually tasted it and I think his kid was also keen to try it , probably put his son off from having a taste of it as well as anyone else that overheard his comments about the non alcoholic beer - It doesn't taste that good and he would not buy it but said he would drink it if it is free. Was it bland? I think it would taste earthy like other non alcoholic beers I have tasted because it has tea in it apparently.
Upstairs and not in the beer garden they did host a late night event chemistry and cocktails for over 18 only but with the option of mocktails held in the bar event room in between other breakout rooms full of kids activities. It was the only ticketed event at SciFest and there was a long queue to enter at $80 or so a ticket with all funds going to UNSW projects.
I was still a little confused over this kids events mixed with adults present. I suppose they had to hold some type of adult event and promotion. It was a bit of a problem if parents wanted to attend the chemistry and cocktails session but they just can't leave their kids to attend as there was no proper supervised child minding baby sitting. No one in the queue upstairs had any kids in tow and most were younger over 18 adults and couples.
