  • Our engineless sail cargo ship Tres Hombres rounded the Atlantic for the eighth time, her belly full with melasses, cacao beans, green coffee beans and barrels of our finest rum.
    Tres Hombres sailed almost seven months, several thousand miles and had an unexpected stop in Nova Scotia.

    Sailing, even on a small sailboat, is THE experience.

    I'm curious how the crew conditions are like on this thing. Operating a sail vessel like this is no small task. And it's a dangerous one too.

    I find this so fascinating! I am a business student and think the future of shipping, is the way our ancestors did it. One of my projects, is to come up with a business model that is functional and profitable. I have been doing non stop research into sailing cargo as a profitable environmentally friendly way to ship goods. I want to ask so many questions about your business!?

      These vessels are pretty outdated. I'm pretty sure your research has already had you run across this, but you'll want to be looking at hybrid engines and dynarigs, like those found on Black Pearl and Maltese Falcon here:

      If this is still something you're pursuing, hit me up. I'm pretty big into shipment by sail. If I had the resources, I'd be doing it.
      Edit: Just found this as well, if you haven't seen it: newatlas.com/b9-shipping-cargo-sailing-ships/23059/

      @@IWLDELJ One problem is that modern designs like Maltese Falcon are fairly light displacement and do not need much sail area for their size to blow them along. A cargo vessel has to be very heavy displacement to be able to carry a large amount of cargo. Tres Hombres can set a great deal of sail for her length. It is not immediately obvious if you were designing a modern sailing cargo vessel what would be the best rig. The old timers knew a thing or two.

      Hi there , fantastic video but what about the women on board . Don't they count? It looks like they worked the same as the blokes. Cheers!

      @ Ploddy Gustav, a Swede I think from Marienhamm, kept going up till the second world war with a fleet of four masted barques. Unfortunately they were destroyed during the war.

    Will you be realistically be able to make it profitable in the long term, I doubt it but it is a noble dream.

      I think they can. There are other ships out there that trade under sail, and are sustainable.

    i wanna build a small bireme for like 2-3 people and row around in the greek islands.

    • @jackvac1918
      @jackvac1918 4 года назад

      Lol bireme's needed 100 oarsmen to power them (it's name referred to it's two decks of rowing stations). 2-3 people could man a canoe or kayak, though you'll probably want to use something sail-powered instead in the Aegean to sail between islands.
