Terrific ranking. I think it's astonishing that to me, all of his films are at the very least very good, and most of them are what I consider masterworks. Here's my ranking: 1.) The Dark Knight. 2.) Memento. 3.) Inception. 4.) Dunkirk. 5.) Interstellar. 6.) The Prestige. 7.) Tenet. 8.) The Dark Knight Rises. 9.) Batman Begins. 10.) Insomnia. 11.) Following.

“This shit is fire, drop it.” - Christopher Nolan
This is definitely how it happened.
I’m in the same boat. I wasn’t crazy about Tenet when I first watched it, but the more I watched it, the more I was able to embrace it. I still think it’s Nolan’s weakest film in a long time, but I like it for what it is.

I thought it was amazing the first time I watched it (With subtitles but it was on a plane so those two cancel out.) and by far better than Interstellar and weirdly I enjoy the emotions of the Protagonist. That being written Dunkirk (2017) and other such films in Nolan's repertoire are better.

I saw Tenet 2x in the movie theatre when it came out. I didn't understand it the first time, but it didn't matter because I was invested in the Protagonist story. The second time it was amazing. And then I bought the dvd and I've rewatched it many times. I even have a Sator square tattoo. I adore Tenet. The movie is amazing. Just feel it. And I felt it so much in the movie theatre with the music blasting off, wow.

I love TENET as well. I literally watched it in theaters about 5 times and then I bought it in 4K and watched it at least 3 more times. Multiple rewatches (at least seeing it twice) do result in a BETTER understanding of the film even if not a COMPLETE understanding of the film. This movie had enthralled me so much that I spent a lot of time researching TENET on the internet, but I know the majority of normal humans wouldn’t do that lol.

I walked out of the theatre on my first viewing and actually felt like I understood most of it. Obviously repeat viewings showed me some things I missed and deepened my understanding of the movie, but from the first time I felt like I generally understood the plot and all the sci-fi mechanics and was able to keep track of most everything that happened.

    Nolan Ranked
    1. The Prestige
    2. The Dark Knight
    3. Inception
    4. Tenet
    5. Dunkirk
    6. Memento
    7. Interstellar
    8. Batman Begins
    9. The Dark Knight Rises
Sadly haven’t watched Insomnia or Following yet. I think I like pretty much all of these, but for me The Prestige is the clear winner. Probably the best-plotted film I can think of; the way information is conveyed and the storylines are woven together is just brilliant. Every twist lands the first time you see it and is earned as you rewatch. I love how the three-tiered plotting, used here to maximize the twists, is used again in Dunkirk to maximize the intensity.
Anyway, great video Bailey! So glad the RUclips gods let it through! Your enthusiasm is infectious, and I can’t wait for the next vid!

Don't you wonder why no other truly great film needs you to do this? Not one? Not Apocalypse Now, not Jaws, not The Parallax View, Not any of Kubrick's films, not Shutter Island, not Memento or any other of Nolan's films, not Donnie Darko, not Fight Club, not Jacob's Ladder, not David Lynch's stuff, not 2001 - A Space Odyssey, not Fight Club, not anything else I can think of EXCEPT for Primer. Whose basic concept Tenet "borrows". Coincidence? I mean there are films where you don't get the basic story and plot mechanics the first time you watch them. But then we are in the territory of comparing Nolan to Tommy Wiseau. Tenet is Nolan over-indulging in an approach he likes, but overdid here. I think Tenet is a super interesting movie. But storytelling-wise it's a failure. Not because of ambition, but because the craftmanship of storytelling here is just misguided. The editing, making an exposition-heavy film and then messing with the sound mix, the reliance on plot mechanics and treating characters as mechanical things within these plot mechanics. All basic tools in filmmaking/ storytelling that were applied badly. Every time I talk to someone else in the business about Tenet, everyone is baffled how it happened in this form.

Thank you! I've been waiting for someone to go ahead and say it and I'm so proud and happy that you did. This movie requires you to shut off your snobby, prejudged notions of what a film is and forces you to play along, adapt, and roll with the punches. You saying it's a vibe is perfect, I've seen the movie probably 6 or 7 times now and between the thrills, the score (MMMMMMM), and the extreme technicality behind its making, I love it more and more every time.
Watching the making of featurettes also adds a beautiful amount of clarity to things I didn't entirely consider. Like how extreme the editing must have been, how he pulled off the extreme sailing scenes with boats that literally "don't jive like this", the inverted and still going forward fight scenes, and landing a huge helicopter on the deck of a private yacht - just to name a few things.
Thank you for showing me I'm not a minority on loving this film, it's honestly in my top 3 Nolans.

I was able to understand the science fiction involving inversion. Physicists up to this point in time have discovered that from our frame of time, time moves forward into the future, into a state of higher entropy (a concept associated with energy). When the entropy is reversed, the way an endothermic and exothermic reaction relate to the release or absorption of energy, then you go into the past. It’s trying to make sense of the time travel, which permeates the entire film, where I got scrambled

Thanks to this video I went and rewatched it for a second time and I have to say it was a far better and far more enjoyable experience this time around. Definitely made much more sense, it was just that first viewing was extremely overwhelming. This is for sure that kind of movie you need to see more than once

whenever i watch tenet i feel like i am on the cusp of fully understanding what's going on but afterwards i couldn't tell you a thing about the actual inversion parts. I don't understand tenet, but i _get_ tenet

  • @babayaga6453

I consider tenet as successful failure, don't get me wrong, i loved the film, i even watched it on IMAX 70mm. the visuals were stunning and amazed by NOLAN filmmaking, i loved how he shot the movie with practical effects but there are several things i didn't like about the movie, 1 of'em were is the movie itself. After watching Interstellar, inception on cinemas i wanted to see it again because i didn't get the story but it's not same with tenet. i got the story plot of 1st screening which was weird, spoiler i even said to my friend that "at freeport, the guys he's fighting is himself" my friend were shocked when it happened. since i am sci-fi geek i already know about grandfather paradox, bootstrap paradox and learned about time inversion in this film. what i am trying to say is this movie didn't gave me the feeling of rewatch because i understood it. This movie was not also emotional/character driven story rather than situation drive. with inception it's about cobb getting his way to his children with interstellar is the same but with TENET its different. Anyways at end of the day this movie is still good but not for me, this is my least fav NOLAN film. Please feel to correct me if i'm wrong or add on your opinion.

I agree with alot of your appraisals. It gets better upon rewatch, at risk of sounding like a broken record. Still not as perfect as Inception or TDK. Rises the ranks over time.

    • @Konoba7
      @Konoba7 3 года назад +2

I think the movie skips the emotional/character aspect that you mention to the very end when we discover that the protagonist and Neil knew each other but never seen in screen, for the same reason that "ignorance is our ammunition" is a way to justify it.

    • @Jaydotp
      @Jaydotp 3 года назад +1

@@Konoba7 Yes the Neil / Protag relationship is something that's built to function upon rewatch, as you now have Neil's knowledge. Kat's emotional journey also works better although still pales in comparison to say, Cobb's, which is understandable

This movie had my full attention for close to five hours. When the movie ended on my first watch, I felt so bamboozled and clueless that I had to watch it again……immediately.
I tried to piece things together from both watches but I can tell you that I’m still learning about this movie till today.
Tenet is still my fav Nolan movie…..after The Prestige

Tenet is my favorite Nolan film so far. But my experience seeing it in cinemas was different than most.
I basically went in and "felt" it rather than understood it from the first viewing simply because I've always felt that Nolan leans too far into exposition, or complexity for complexities sake, and have never taken those scenes too seriously.
This meant that I got the big picture, it being a time travel Roger Moore Bond film, with a humanist protagonist as an example of the type of human we have to be to do the hard things and better this world.
Small things, like what the heck is in the coat check in the opening sequence? Didn't know, didn't care.
I think the story is easy to follow visually, and I never felt lost. I think the people who were lost got hung up on catching every word, which you never needed to.
American agents. American agents pretending to be Ukrainian or Russian, or it doesn't matter. Double agent, here to rescue him, something important in coat check, got it.

I respect you opinion, and this is well made. I can't say I feel it as much as you tho. I wish the action was all of the movie and it stopped trying to make a grand story out of it cause the story just doesn’t make sense or make me feel anything. The action was generally great, especially the hallway fight...I could watch that over and over, but the constant narrative reinforcement is telling me to pay attention to the story which is so boring, especially anything involving the villain is dreadful. The best way to enjoy the story is to not pay attention to it...that's not a good thing lol. The experience of time reversal is the best part of this film and it should have fully focused on that instead of what we got.

It might of helped that my first viewing of the movie was off of my 4k Bluray copy with subtitles turned on, (sorry Nolan but your sound mix is too specific it sounds like garbage in the theater every time) I understood the basics of the movie and only a second viewing allowed me to piece together the stuff I missed. It's probably my personal favorite so far of Nolan's. It's a head scratcher for sure but that's what I loved about it.
