I can't believe I've come across a tutorial whose pace is PERFECT for me! Not a lot of yapping, play the leads and rhythms slow and fast - After 4 years of trying to learn this song on mandolin, you've finally gotten me across the finish line! THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!

This was awesome instruction. You have successfully taught me the proper way to play this in such a short period of time. The format of including the backing tracks, both slow and fast are extremely helpful. The only negative is that your BPM increases dramatically in both.
This is a great tutorial - I wish more could be like this. I can't play even nearly as fast as this, but I'm getting closer week by week. Thanks man.

Thanks for this, just took the plunge with a mandolin after failing dismally with a banjo for a year. This has inspired me!
That's excellent!!! I am glad you can be inspired by my video! Banjo is a hell of a difficult instrument to practice! It's like Violin, when you start the noise is horrific, so it's tough to keep at it! Kick the mandolin's butt and then give the Banjo another shot! You can do it as long as you don't quit!

Learning Tenor Banjo so there's a link in how both instruments are tuned. Can play it, but nowhere near this fast! Definitely subscribing!
Great instructional video! I especially liked the backing tracks you added. I like these Celtic tunes, many of which became well known fiddle tunes.
Great tone on that Eastman....I am a Weber woman myself . I like the darker tone of the Weber but playing with you here, the two sound great together and really compliment each other. Fantastic lesson btw...thank you :)

Hey brother -- first, NICE pace and lesson. Just clear, concise and to the point. BRAVO! Second, love the guitar accompaniment section there at the end to play along with. I just started on my Eastman (305) a few weeks ago, and have been learning scales and 3 and 4 note chords mostly. Came across this lesson looking at steel guitar vids (I play guitar, dobro and steel). I'm abouit 95% close to your 114 tempo at the end there, so I'm getting there! Great lesson. Thank you!

Honestly, sitting here listening with a foolish little grin, that is such a good and happy sound you're getting. I really want to play this onstage with mandolin, tin whistle, harmonica, and bodhran. Guess I should go buy the mandolin first.....

GREAT VIDEO. Thank you so much for a thoughtful, carefully produced video to help us learn this song well.
Some very good mandolins are Rigel, very old Gibsons (some people will swear by them, but most of the newer ones are waaaay overpriced in my opinion), Weber, Collings, and a lot of custom made mandolins. There are plenty more to name, but those are honestly pretty pricey. My R-100 Rigel cost me $2600, but it was worth every cent so think about investing in an expensive one eventually. As far as lower end mandolins go, I've heard Kentucky makes pretty good lower end models so you could try those.

Hey Andrew! Thanks man! So good it got you on to the Mandolin, that's great! A soft pick could be useful for faster playing, but you wont get much volume. I use the red Jazz III's when I play guitar, and I find they work superbly on the mandolin as they get good volume and have the finer point! So personally I would go for them, but it's always worth experimenting! Have fun fellow Mandolineristerplayerperson!

well i thank you and i think you should feel confident that you're a fine looking gent. your video was quite helpful. my grand-da passed before he could teach me to play the mandolin he left me so your easy to understand lesson was priceless. this was my favorite song as a boy and he was very indulgent. i think the rest of the family got tired of it.

i'm still having trouble following this. Is there any chance you could do a slow version where you explain where your fingers are going. It is most likely that it is just me being slow, but I can't always tell which fret you are playing etc. Brilliant job with the song though, check you out!! xx

hey man! My problem is with the right hand. I don't know how I should pick the chords.. I can move the laft hand fast enough, but my right hand cannot keep up. Any advices? Thanks in advance!
Hey! Yeah, usually the left hand can go faster, which is really annoying! XD I would literally just advise patience. Play only as fast as your picking hand can play, without any tension. NO TENSION! Can't stress that enough. Make sure your forearm and upper arm aren't tense, and then keep a check on your shoulders. Keep them relaxed. If you tense up, you can't play fast. So with that in mind, just keep practicing slow for now, and the speed WILL come.

What's the best brand of mandolin? I know that's a 100% subjective question, but could you throw out some of the top names? I'm a guitar guy but I'm becoming proficient on the mandolin. I've got a Johnson JMA-100 that a friend has let me borrow. It's playable, but I don't think it's very good (but don't really have a basis of comparison), and I'm looking to upgrade. What's the best mandolin I could buy (in the US) for around $400?
Your picking in very sharp. gj. Any tips for cleaning up my sloppy picking?
I would say, play slowly - without making mistakes, Relax your arm. If your arm is tense, then you are playing beyond your level, and it will only get worse. Concentrate on getting a good, solid, clear tone - and the speed will come later. Let other people play faster than you - just make sure you sound better. Not that it's a competition! :p

Hey Lewis, im a guitarist by nature but am thinking of getting a mandolin, i have read songs like irish washerwomen or folk and celtic are better suited to an oval mando rather than the F you're playing, is there any truth in that and any reason you play this on an F rather than an oval?
Also, im specifically thinking of getting a barnes and mullins piercy mandolin, have yo heard or played one of these?

Hi! Yea, I think the oval sound hole does have a different sound to the F hole style mandolins. The shape of the mandolin doesn't actually make much difference at all. I mean F5 shape with the scroll compared to the tear drop shaped mandolins. The Oval Sound holes give a deeper, richer sound where as the F holes give a thinner, more cutting tone, better suited for bluegrass chops. There's a lot more to the sound than just the style of sound hole though. I haven't heard of the maker, but if I were you, I would try out a fair amount of mandolins first before making a decision!
