I was 6 years old when this came out. A year later when I was 7 my parents would divorce and my life would be changed forever. This song always gave me the feeling that everything would be OK. Only love can set you free and that's what this song does, it's sets you free. Now 30 years later in 2024, I'm 37 with 2 kids of my own and we dance around the living room to this blasting out on the Alexa. What a fantastic time to grow up. Long life the 90s. X
I don't know why I'm sharing this here. But fuck it. When I was 8 in 1995, I put this song on with my friend, and we put these flashing coloured lights on and danced like it was the last night of our lives. I have so many happy memories with him, but this stands out. When he was 13, he was told he had cancer but it went away. A few years later, he was told they'd missed something and it had spread to his knee, so his right leg was amputated below the knee. I made a band with him to make him happy, as I knew it's something he always wanted. At 14, he was told they'd missed something again, and the cancer had actually "metastersised" and he was terminal. One of my best friends who I called a cousin, died at 15 years old. It has never left me. That shock. That kick in the face. Life was never the same again. I have a comment on The Verve - The Drugs Don't Work with 2k like that says "this goes out to those having a hard time. You'll get through it!". But that's BS. You never get through it. I lost my best friend at 15 and I'll never recover. I'll never be a normal guy. I'll just always return here, to this song, and feel down. And feel sad. And know I've lost more than I gained in this life. Edit 29/08/24 This was a very low and angry point in my life and the tone is a bit bitter. It's not what happens to you, it's how you react. I'm doing really well in life now and have raised money for the rare cancer that took my friend. I have chosen (with zero evidence) to believe in heaven as I've had a lot of loss. And believing I'll see Chris again (Christopher Hardman. May his name live on) has helped me. Thank you so so much for the kind comments, it helped me when I was in anger and bitterness and I read them all. I'd now like to leave that bitterness behind and live a happy life were I serve others in Chris' memory. I'm raising money for a Sepsis charity at the moment and it gives me happy life direction and helps serve others. Thank you again. Andy
Those moments you gave him, where he was dancing, making music with you and not thinking about his cancer, that's the measure of life mate. Life will always look like a losing game if you look at it as starting full and then diminishing, just don't forget that what both of you gained were the moments you made with each other. From one broken person to another, I hope you continue to make those moments because really, life starts empty and we fill it. It always comes with loss and pain, thats the trade we make for the joy.
@@isthi000ify Hi mate, I was going to delete this but I'm glad people like you get it. My belief in God and heaven gets me through as I believe he's in a better place and I'll see him again. Thanks for your kind words
Songs always mark the times in our lives, the good, the bad, the devastating, or deliriously happy times. I wonder why music makes us think so deep and feel so much? It really cuts to your ❤
I’m not sure the beginning of a track can put me back on that dance floor as a kid in the 90s like this. The euphoria. The moment the crowd recognised what it was.. bliss
Reminds me of experimenting with Class A drugs and not having a care in the world. Now I’m sober for 10yrs, married, and have 21yr old son and still don’t have a care in the world - pure fun. Gen Z suck ✌️
Many people seem to remember this being released in 1995 not 1992, so I've done some digging. The song actually had 3 releases. It was recorded on Pete watermans label in 1992 but the label wouldn't release it. N-trance bought themselves out of the label and released it officially in 1993 but it only charted at 89. In 1994 they re-released it again and it charted at 39. However by 1995 their popularity had increased so much that they decided to release it one last time and it actually charted in the UK at Number 2! So that's when many of us heard it for the first time and why lots of us have memories of it being released in 1995, much later than 1992. Thank me later. 👌
