James Franklin is always a huge part of why Penn State loses big games but yesterday he was a big part of why they won that Minnesota game so give him some credit for that
Great show! I think Franklin used great discretion on the 4th and shorts. They’re not all created equal. Losing Donkah could’ve given some pause going for them early. Not to mention being on the road, never want to give the crowd any reason to make it more intense. Additionally, even if you convert on your own side of the field, you still have to get multiple first downs before you’re even in scoring range. I think the risk outweighed the reward in some of those scenarios. However we feel about those fourth down decisions, we’re all in agreement on PJ Fleck’s 4th down call late! lol made it easier for us, for sure.
How can you be so confident that PSU should have gone for it on 4th down when we were 1 for 11 on 3rd down, failed to convert on 3rd & two once (Singleton) and 3rd & one twice (Warren x2)... PSU's best short yardage play was the hurry up without Minnesota getting set... Fleck's decision on 4th and 8 wasn't that bad IMHO. He could then kick a FG (with the wind) and win the game... With PSU's 3rd down conversion rate (1-11 = 9.1%) it wasn't crazy. Our offense wasn't exactly dominating. They forced a 4th and one with 3:49 to go, which would have given them plenty of time to get the ball and kick a FG... that drive was 11 plays for 67 yds and we only forced one third down and Deluca made a nice coverage play in the EZ. I do appreciate your podcast, just (possibly) generating discussion.
They absolutely made the right decisions punting early. On the road, late in the season, you pin an opposing offense deep. It doesn’t matter that there’s a chance for success, what matters is if they don’t make it, imagine how far of a lead Minnesota could have had in that scenario…probably on they couldn’t overcome.
They are a very ordinary "top 5" team, but that appears to be plenty good enough in a year where there appears to be only 2-3 teams that are obvious NC contenders. It helps that the bottom 2/3 of the BIG is atrocious and their schedule lined up accordingly. Holding Illinois up as the best W says everything about the conference.
Excuse me, but PJ Fleck did not decide that he was going to loose by one. He felt that his defense was playing well enough to get the ball back. He was almost right.
They obviously went undefeated on the road during their undefeated seasons in’86 & ‘94… I have a hard time blaming coaching in this game. There was a general bad attitude and performance from the players for the first 40 minutes of this game; they’re kids, it’s damn hard to rise up week in and week out during a long season. Regardless of talent, this is an impressive group of guys…
@@jackstraw6880 saying they are kids is labeling with an excuse. I love the team’s resolve when their back is against the wall. I just despise the “they are just kids” label. They are men getting paid to preform at a high level now.
"undefeated on the road" but they were playing patsies at home and only played 4 road games. I don't see 5 road wins as the definition of juggernaut, but it is what it is.
Different levels - but I just watched a game Thursday night where one coach decided field position didn’t matter and made dumb decisions in the first quarter that set the tone for a pretty bad loss.
I generally enjoy the work of Audrey and Jon. Sadly they both elected to cross what I believe are basic journalist principals by taking personal shots at the subject(s) of their coverage by calling both head coaches "cowards" for in game coaching decisions the writers disagreed with. We live in cynical times and sports are all many of us have left to hold on to as an escape from the otherwise angry world in which we live. Audrey, Jon please do better.
Jon it’s not guaranteed you make it on 4th and 1. You would not be a good coach at all. It was Luke Reynolds fault on blocked punt, as you stated he allowed himself to get leveraged.
Dunno if that was the call or not, but RT also committed to punting around his blockers and didn't identify the edge rush with a lack of middle rush. ie, he could have punted to Reynold's left.
The glasses are great. They help reduce glare from artificial lights and make objects appear sharper. I wear them when i ride my m/c at night. They used to be called Blu Blockers. i also thought Fleck had some medical issues with his eyes but not sure about that.
It just felt like a loss from the opening quarter. Regarding the first 4th and 1, of course you have to punt that one. The second, in the first quarter, yes, it was very strange for Penn State to punt that one. The "no" touches for K-Tron for so long, was also very strange. Andy K needs to take major risks in the playoffs. They are simply not good enough on either side of the ball, to win the NC in the playoffs. Rutgers held Minn to 40 yards. Minn ran all over PSU. PSU could not run for 2 yards, on 3rd downs. Thus, the reason for all those 4th and 1s. This team is simply not good enough if they play conservative. If they throw it around like they don't care, loose and fun, they could be dangerous. Stressed and conservative... they don't have a chance.

I have been a big time Franklin critic for years but I must give him his props for that last drive and clock management.

It says alot about this team. This is a game Penn State loses every other year.

Go Bucks. Forget about the BIG 10 title game.

They are out of the kid stage they don’t get that excuse with NIL anymore
@ I don’t see any excuses. I didn’t make any excuses. I just said they made up for playing like shit for 2.5 quarters.

@ they don’t suddenly get older. But you’re gonna bitch & disagree anyway so it’s a moot point…

Please stop talking over one another & interrupting with petty inputs. 🤦🏻♂️
