We produce 13 tons of hazardous waste every second [Advertiser content from MailChimp]

- Most homes across America have a stash of chemical cleaners under the sink that becomes hazardous waste as soon as you’re done using them. And some of the household products don’t even make it out of the store, as retailers often get rid of sticky, dented, and forgotten bottles. Those become hazardous waste too.
There are 400 million tons of hazardous waste produced across the globe each year. That’s like one garbage truck filled to the brim, every second of every day.
Thankfully, companies like Smarter Sorting have turned to recycling products instead of incinerating them, so they move cradle-to-cradle rather than cradle-to-grave.

The only complaint that I have with vox is that they don't have the sources in the description, so when people ask me where the proof is I can't show them.
Y D they usually have the source written in the right hand corner of the screen when they’re stating certain facts or showing figures
Alexandre St-Laurent {ASTL32} I mean for the numbers and statistics.
Ask MailChimp. They sponsored the video after all.
exactly.. that's video proof.. and if you are dumb enough to deny that's fake.. just go and visit dumpsters yourself..
Just say dude trust me, that might do it ;)
A much better option is to clean with less harmful products; baking soda, vinegar, castile soap, and even lemons. There's very little that these products can't clean. If you simply tell people to buy dented containers, those products are still going into the environment when you use them. This also sends a message to producers; that consumers want products that are safe for themselves and the environment. Put your money where your mouth is.
And if you're interested in reducing waste, look into the Zero Waste movement. Although eating less dairy and meat, particularly beef, as well as driving less, are the 2 biggest changes you can make to help the environment. Also buying less/used clothes. www.reddit.com/r/ZeroWaste/wiki/index

This is somewhat depressing
Life is
Life is nothing but bad news wish I wasnt in such a rush to be grown sad but at least ppl have found ways to use it as this and fuel
Oof. It’ll take a while to fix this problem.
Can’t wait to see how much progress is made in 50 Years.
thebahooplamaster will be none of we don’t get to fixing these problems asap

How can you report a company to the EPA for Illegal dumping of Hazardous materials?
Jarid Gaming call 911
Google it
Jarid Gaming call 800-621-8431
I would start at a local level.
With this administration they are probably already paying the EPA to do it
The best way to not make a waste is to not waste it
_Star_27_ - Don't consume in the first place. Buy only the basic necessities and follow the 5 R's: Refuse what you do not need, Reduce what you do need, Reuse what you consume, Recycle what you cannot Refuse, Reduce or Reuse, and Rot (aka Compost) the rest.
My city has a restore that gives you for free any of the house hold chemicals and paints you want. The problem is they are only open for very limited hours and it's hard to wait for them to be open when you need something quickly.
Try cleaning with vinegar or baking soda
I sometimes use it to clean my clothes so i can use less detergent, works wonders and also cleans my front loader and prevent suds.
I don't think people take this topic serious, after reading few comments under this video
We need this around the globe! Hope the UN or WHO starts an organisation or NGO which would help setup such centres worldwide. Love it. Great respect to the man. Need of the minute, not hour.
What's that cute little Yellow TV doing in there?

wtf, when I worked at a supermarket and we saw a sticky container, we would just get a towel and wipe it off. It's not that much effort. And dented product we would try to undent or just sell it at a discount if no one grabbed it. Sure we did toss a bunch of stuff, but that was mostly food and we had an agreement with a local farmer who would pick up the waste food and feed it to his cattle.
No fancy solution needed for that, all you need is to not be lazy and actually think.
(giving that a second thought, maybe the solution in the video would be better...)
Here in Texas, we have no facilities that I know of for disposing of more hazardous household items. You can't even recycle most recyclable items. It's becoming a huge concern around our major cities where experts say it may begin to leak into our water...
its frkn messed up for sure... just recently they gave us green bins to put organic material in, hardly no one uses it though... also another thing is they tell us that most of our waste is recyclable but then turn around and give us small recycle bins to put into our homes (they are frign 1.5-3 gallons!!) and yes I personally crush anything that can be crushed before putting it in them but thats still not enough room.. People also need a compost bin as well in the house (brown perhaps?) to throw food and organic material (not organic waste of course... eww) in but they do not give us that option either (to my current knowledge..) we also have a population that is just genuinely not knowledgeable on what can be recycled, thrown in the organic waste bin, or trash can due to lack of caring, lack of education, or lack of communication on part of the trash company,... hardly anyone even needs a trash can really.... yet here they are stuffed to the brim most of the time. Also every try driving behind a trash collector truck? try it some time you will be amazed as to how much trash gets blown out of them while they drive.
I live a little east of Dallas. We have recycling pickup every week, and they have hazardous item pickup days at least once a year. (maybe more, I don't really use much to bother with) If your waste management doesn't have it, then you need to contact the city and push for it, and encourage others in your community to do so as well. Texas is huge, though, so depending on your location the options might be limited.
Jon Stewart I'm speaking about the greater Houston area, particularly the rural places. I could be wrong, there may be waste disposal I'm unaware of. But as far as I know there isn't really much in the way of recycling, and most things go to the landfill. I'll be sure to take your suggestion, thanks.
The problem with this is- “Will the world end in my lifetime? No? Then I don’t care.”
Will the world end in my grandkids lifetime? Yep. Do it for your grandkids!
Clumpy xD he talks about ignorant and selfish people, not himself
Clumpy Wtf?
You sure?
To be clear, I am not talking about myself
This kind of stuff should be enforced by governments to really make a difference
In my city, you can take your hazardous waste to the dump where they can either dispose of it properly or sell it in their resale store. I encourage everyone to check out what their city's waste management department offers it's citizens.
I love you guys. You talk about the stuff that matters.
And to think the head of the EPA has 0 environmental experience. A degree in environmental engineering or a related field should be a requirement for the position. There will never be progress with this serious problem without the correct awareness. It would be unheard of to hire a person with 0 piloting experience to fly a plane, yet that scenario is exactly what’s happing at the EPA. Elect the correct people for these positions, do your part.
Brochacho III ikr our president doesn’t care
its almost as if our POTUS ran on the stance of cutting two regulations for every one new one put into action... and then won... then put in place an advocate against the EPA as the head of the EPA
Check to see where your nearest household haz waste site is. Every city should have one and they are free to use. Don't rely on your local sanitation worker to identify hazardous waste curbside.
Bonus tip: cement is inert while dry, but while it's being mixed becomes highly corrosive. Any water used to clean cement mixing equipment is also usually corrosive. Don't wash that stuff down the drain.
"Leachate" what a word. Perfect way to express nast draining liquid yuckiness
I just turned my bathroom into a hazmat room.... better give it a minute.
I try to make things at home IE cleaning supplies. Its fun and I enjoy learning and in the process I am contributing far less to the waste issue. The world loves "More Stuff" but we need to learn more about what we already have.
I read the title and gasped
BTW, Congratulations VOX! I heard you'll be the part of RUclips's upcoming News service? That's a great achievement, and we all know you deserved it! :)
I watch Vox for their exceptional video editing
worked in retail, can confirm that messed up packaging = product goes in trash. It won't get sold, it will mess up the other clean and well packaged things, and it's not worth the cost to send back to the company for a refund or replacement. Like, the cost of the fuel is more than the cost of the product, either financially or ecologically. Big companiess need to be forced to pay for effective recycling in their retail outlets. I have never seen an example of effective recycling in the retail environment, other than customer-accessed bins in the dining areas (and those are often emptied into one dumpster).
Came for the ad stayed for the info.
You can also use things like eucalyptus oil, baking soda, vinegar and lemon for cleaning.
the main issue is that there are no incentives for people to purchase those damaged items, so maybe an reduction on price will help?
This is horrible. People should be educated to waste less and pollute less. It's really important and simple because if everyone does smth small, it adds up but because they feel what they do is so small, there isn't a point to do it. We need to take better care of the earth!
Deep in there are the unsold copies of Battlefront 2
The problem really is mainly, people don't care, nor do they see the effects firsthand - "Who cares? The universe'll end eventually"
And they do make a valid argument; "why should i care?"
Still cleaner than my room
The statement that "retailers just throw them away" is not accurate. I work for a major US retailer. Leaking containers can and do have a well defined protocol. I follow it myself, and see it followed by other associates. We care. It does not just go into the dumpster.
Except that when you spill those corrosive materials down the drain to clean your toilet or unclog your sink, they make it into the water system anyways D:
It gets diluted in sewer water and the sewer water gets filtered out
Agriculture pesticides also precipitate on forrests. It's just one world, there's no throwing "out".
Garbage is used to produce electricity. Also if you dug a hole the size of the Delaware (the 2nd smallest state) it would take 100 years for the hole to fill up and that would account for the whole country's garbage.
My left ear enjoyed this
I've been doing this for years, in regards to preventing waste.Although when I bought dented products I was actually feeling as though I was helping the business by ensuring they sold their stock, and would be able to keep their prices lower for longer.
It is cool to see the environmental side of it too
I wanna get that nice-ass old tv
When I worked for Sephora, anytime someone would return hair spray, perfume, or any type of chemical product we would have to put it into a special box for hazardous waste. It’s a shock because most of the time it was used once, and the client just didn’t like it. I wish they had a way to donate products like perfumes that can be sanitized, then given to homeless shelters or something.
This feels like a more interactive TED-ED video
My bedroom is like a toxic wasteland
BLEACH EVERYWHERE
This is not really an end solution to dealing with hazardous waste. This is just moving it from one place to another.
Vox, in it’s natural habitat.
my dumb ass thought the thumbnail was from the spring day mv
I didn’t know we make a Billion Tons of Babies each year huh.
This video is largely correct. The "solution" proposed is the "re-use" arm of the recycling goal. That's a great place to make progress. However, 1:34 is misleading. Not only are haz waste facilities VERY good at sorting chemicals to make the best and safest use / disposal decisions but pollution controls on incinerators are also very effective. Vox, if you'd like to claim otherwise, please use numbers and put them in context. Even then, the proposed solution of re-use is not a mutually exclusive option. Denigration of the current system and strategy isn't required to encourage more responsible re-use of chemicals.
Oh. No. These times must be the best of days humanity will have in respect to the far future
"Make sure it never becomes waste" But what about when these items are used? This isn't addressed in the video. They'll end up as waste still and probably end up in a landfill.
Vinegar, baking soda and dish soap is all you need for 99% of your cleaning needs.
The world needs to slow down. Seriously, Im not against progress. But technology is speeding ahead of us as humans. Lets use the technology we have to make a better world, with less polution etc. We have progress but you have to wonder at times what type of progress is it ??
I bet you anything half the people watching this aren't going to buy the dented sticky bottle of hand soap the next time they make a target run.
I wonder how much Smart Sort paid to have this advertisement.
The best way to stop polluting the earth is to avoid using materials that pollute and to dispose of them properly or use materials that are just biodegradable in the first place.
Instead of having to deal with the waste an potential of waste in harsh chemicals, why not ban the companies from producing such products? or force them to find alternatives? That would be the REAL solution.
Tons of important stuff they don't teach in schools..... deliberately.
KK, whoever wrote the title for this video gets a pat on the back from me. "we produce 13 tons of waste every..."
what is it? day? week? month? year? ::hovers over title:: "...second" ::mind blown::
Well played... very well played.
The vast range of household cleaning products we have is honestly unnecessary, we don’t need as much as we think a small range of 2-3 products will work with cleaning everything in the house.
I find a lot of these "damaged" and "unsellable" items when I dumpster dive, though I've seen more and more retailers use discount shelves in order to sell imperfect but usable items. not as nice as getting it free, but still saves me money and the trouble of digging them out
I wish smarter storage got more attention..
we need more smart sorting nation wide an across the globe
I made it a goal to reduce my overall waste after watching a Vox video early this year, and we've gone down to putting out a few garbage bags a week to the roadside for pickup down to putting out one garbage can every 2 weeks.
If the container is dented or sticky, it probably has a leak or is about to develop one. Take care to not expose yourself to its hazardous contents.
No need for this really. Stores could just slap a -30% or -50% sticker on like a dented product and it will be out the door in a minute.
If something uses the word ‘smart’ and ‘empower’ in its description I automatically turn off
I hope they have some system in place to check that what is inside the container actually matches the label on the outside.
I am pretty proud of this. Way to go me and my fellow colleagues.
Cool video of saving materials.
I hope this company is able to do some good!
I thought mermaids sang and took all the trash to an island away from Bikini Bottom
Wait....
Solution: Buy a subpar product so the average product can be thrown away instead
Thank you for prominently showing that his is an ad
Wow that advice at the end was the best you could think of? Nice
it's disgusting how they throw stuff out in the warehouse I been and they make sure nobody gets none.
We're screwed
Very interesting... great animation and narration!
It sounds like manufacturers’ responsibilities....
This is amazing ❤️
In europe we sort the rubbish into separate containers, it's kinda baffling the US still deals with those issues.
Forced G+ Account are you dumb. You didn’t listen to the video at all did you
But I don't want the sticky container. It'll make my hands sticky.
Very good quality of video
Sidenote: 400,000,000 is not any kind of majority of 1,000,000,000
Great. I was looking for a way to help without changing my household cleaner purchases. Its easy to buy the dented products. It's what's on the inside that counts anyway.
My jaw dropped the entire time while watching this video 😬😲
Hold on a second... How is using my bleach any different? I mop my floor with bleach, I throw out the dirty water and blammo! The bleach is now in the sewer system.
i wanna see an article on waste in China, the waste there is incredible.
Go thanos mode on half the population
Tell Chris Ripley his tech would probably find a great market in Scandinavia
Look into environmental centers. There is one in my county where you can dispose of stuff for free and they recycle it properly and stuff like half empty spray cans and stuff are available in the "store" for free for other people to use". Sure some of it will end up back in the landfill, but every little bit helps.
Atleast it feeds the seagulls
So this is like the deformed foods thing. Where markets throw away "unappealing" looking food.
WE GOTTA CRANK THAT NUMBER UP!
I threw a empty bottle of coke into the San Francisco Bay once.
Aquafishsoup ✋
Uhhh pick the sticky container? I think not
Jason Pham lol right
they(shopkeepers) sometimes wipe the containers with a piece of cloth, mostly they sell that without cleaning at all.
Whats the link between MailChimp and Smarter Sorting? I guess I don't understand why this content is "from" MailChimp instead of Smarter Sorting themselves.
The only way to prevent this is stop buying those chemicals. There are much more efficient ways to clean your house using natural products or biodegradable ones.
So if those toxic chemicals are harmful to us and/or the environment when its outside, whats it doing inside our homes?
There should be a yo mamma joke here somewhere
Even if you throw and segregate your trash, it will still end up in a landfill, along with other in segregated trash.
