A 2016 Special Presentation of the complete Surrender at Appomattox (2007) video. In this film, you will see the actual campsite areas at Appomattox where Lee and Grant were actually staying when the surrender was decided upon... at the exact time of year. Lee in the dry leaf woods and Grant on the beginnings of lush green grass... The field headquarters are also identical to the ones that these generals had, as well, as are the accoutrements of General Lee; the saddle, writing table, and et cetera... even his uniform was made by the same company that made Lee's uniforms originally... The surrender is held annually at the Babcock House, a period perfect house four miles from the McLean House, and a house which was there, at the time, and unlike the PRESENT DAY McLean house, would have been the actual house had they been four miles THE OTHER WAY when this happened.... in other words, it would have been EXACTLY where we filmed it...
This RUclips commercial has had 142,877 views... so seeing the whole thing here ought to get even more... oh, and you can buy this on DVD here at:

This video is now available on Amazon.com. complete with both men and footage of their horses, their armies, and a surrender at Appomattox with the stacking of the arms. The actual General Order #9 surrender copy of Lt. General Jubal A. Early is also shown as Lee reads it aloud. THIS IS THE ACTUAL DOCUMENT which had a first showing in Bedford, Virginia several years ago, and was filmed at that time.
A RUclips-mandated ten minute abridgement of a film made in 2007 at the Babcock House, four miles from the McLean House. The occasion was an event held at the Babcock House, and Confederate Pictures was privileged to record the rehearsal prior to the event. Dave Palmer stars as General Robert E. Lee and Tony Daniels is General Ulysses S. Grant. Dave and Tony are the generals of choice for these two roles, and Confederate Pictures is pleased to work with these men whenever these roles are needed.
The house in the opening shot is the actual rebuilt McLean House from the original surrender, just down the road from the Babcock House.

What is astounding is the letter that Lee wrote never reached Lincoln it was found over 100 years later and then President Gerald Ford pardoned Lee
David Camp Ford inappropriately pardoned RELee.
@@vincentprincipato9234 I think General Lee was of no further harm to the US Army
@@vincentprincipato9234You are absolutely correct. It was inappropriate to pardon Lee, because he did nothing wrong, to warrant needing a pardon. The man was a Hero, and one of the greatest Generals in history! It sounds like you're jealous of how great he was, and how you yourself will never be a great man. Except amongst your fellow virtue signaling friends. 😂
I Enjoyed this Very Much. It was well done and put together greatly. Thank You So Much for Posting I Love To see our History being portrayed well and kept alive through things like this 👍👍👍👍👍
Outstanding job ladies and gentlemen!
Thank you!
Kudos - one of the better re-enactments and Grant and Lee are believable too. If you're a history buff, I give it 5 STARS!
Thanks!!
After 4 long years of fighting bi think the fighting we t out of the war weary soldiers. But there was no point to continue the blood letting any further the victory went to the north and fairly won
Great Portrayal of Both General Robert E. Lee and General Ulysses S. Grant.
The actor playing Lee conveys the wish to retain dignity in the personal disaster of surrender
The house belonged to Wilmer McClainon whose land the first major battle of the war was fought. he then movers his family to Appomattox, a place, he thought, too far await be involved in the fighting again. After the war, he could say the war began in his front yard and ended inches front parlor!
Now THAT is ABSOLUTELY IRONICALLY INCREDIBLE, yet; true!!
Great Video. Thanks you for posting and sharing.
Very welcome, sir!
Anyone else see that ghost run behind lee when he said “those were very different times indeed”????!!!!
Camera or equipment reflection.
Absolutely magnificent gentlemen!!!
Thank you very much!
He fought for a cause that is the worse anybody could fight for.
@@luisdeleon9819 Who did ?
An engaging re-creation and video overall. The music and effects are interesting. May I ask why those effects ans sounds were chosen? Cheers from Canberra, Australia.
The music is Kevin McLeod because he is free, and it has a nice depressed Celtic ring to it, I think.
CaptBeauregards - Oh OK, thanks! It suits the production and certainly makes one feel rather reflective. My 13yr old enjoyed it very much and actually understood the significance of the two Generals meeting. Well done and thanks again!
I am glad that you enjoyed it. It was the last film my dad and I made before he passed away.
Very good presentation. Why did General Lee punch his gauntlet 3 times like that at the end? did that happen? what did it signify? General Grant was very gracious with the terms. I wonder if General Lee thought he would be arrested when he got to the house. Thanks from London UK.
Thank you! Yes, Lee did punch his gauntlet like that the three times. Our Lee impersonator, Dave Palmer, believes that it was his "if only" statement, in some way.
Grant was more than gracious according to the two generals who played these parts; Tony Daniels and Dave Palmer, Grant was completely enamored of his old superintendent from West Point. Lee was assigned a place of prominence among West Point’s most illustrious and revered graduates. He had, after all, graduated near the top of his class, served with distinction in the Mexican War, and during the Civil War won a series of spectacular victories against the larger and better equipped (but ineptly led) Army of the Potomac. Lee embodied the values that West Point seeks to inculcate in its graduates: Duty, Honor, and Country. Lee was an exceptional officer and military engineer in the United States Army for 32 years. During this time, he served throughout the United States, distinguished himself during the Mexican-American War, and served as Superintendent of the United States Military Academy.
And Lee had just finished outwitting and nearly destroying Grant's massive forces over the last four years! So, I think he was right to be so enamored of this man.
Lee came to the house fully prepared to be arrested, and to offer his sword as a surrendered relic. Like President Jefferson Davis (from our GREAT SACRIFICE movie, also shown for free here on my CaptBeauregard's Channel), he was fully prepared to even be executed in the cause of Confederate rights and legality.
This is apparently a word for word account taken from the minutes. We were allowed to film this practice session given earlier in the day.
@@georgerolandwills7576 Thank You Sir for your informative reply. I am a relatively new student of the ACW although I did watch the Ken Burns series years ago. I'm ploughing through a biog of General Jackson at the moment and the next will be a biog of General Lee but there are so many!! I would appreciate any suggestions on a definative volume. I will definately be watching more of your productions. Best Wishes.

Ism dire it
Must have been on his mind. The terms were very generous towards the rebs. Band better than they deserved
The Texas Brigade Music Is Amazing! They're Confederate Rebel Heroes!
That's the actual flag of the Confederacy at the beginning:"the stainless banner". They added the vertical red stripe to improve visibility at sea.
I thought it was to diswsti ish from the union flag when unfurled.
Was this picture filmed by a private filmmaker or short documentary producer? If so, this is a very good depiction of the event.
No, just me and my dad, before he passed away from cancer... done on a set of digital8 SONYS before HI DEF came out, and edited on a 2006 iMac WHITE computer running TIGER and iMovie and iDVD 06... Thank you!
The men involved are the official living historians from the MOC in Richmond and other venues, however. Dave Palmer and Tony Daniels are the best!!
I am... Confederate Pictures!!
Jeff Davis lost the war for the South. But he had a lot of help from the squabbling generals. And states like North Carolina hoarding supplies while some Confederate soldiers went barefoot.
❤grant at his best!
In 1865 General Grant was a Lt. General (The only #-Star general in the Union). The uniform in this re-enactment has him wearing the One Star of a brigadier?
That was in the beginning of the Video too, however Grant was wearing a 3 star chevron at the time of the Surrender. He was not a believer in a lot of fan fair. He often wore the same clothes as his men, and only put on a jacket with 3 stars. When grant heard that General Lee was going to meet him at Appomattox Court house, he put on his coat, and rode there immediately, muddy boots and all. You will also notice that General Lee wore a Confederate Uniform of a Colonel, not a full General in the Confederate Army. Lee had been promoted to a full Colonel in the Union Army before he declined to accept the Command of the Union Army offered by Lincoln.
Even though Gen.Grant is in a neater uniform than some description s I've read still looks very like the uniform 9f a normal soldier .
was that thunder?
Robert E. Lee was too honorable a man for the Civil War. There were numerous Southern Generals that would have told the men to disperse and continue the fight by Guerrilla warfare. The war would have gone on for many years to come.
Yes, but that would not have achieved the South's goal of maintaining their own nation. It would have been little more than vengeance. Grant knew the Southern troops could do this, which is why he took pains to offer generous terms of surrender that would leave Lee and his army with some dignity. Lee cared to much for his men to have them spend the rest of their lives being little more than guerilla fighters and fugitives in their own land, Nevertheless they would have done so had they felt they had nothing else to lose. Unfortunately, many returned home to find they no longer had homes.
Hey what was that nosie ?
Nathan Bedford Forrest
Hey what was that nosie
He was 58 not 88.
Nice video. But Lee lacks his Virginia accent, and both men are sitting in the wrong chairs.
Mr. Palmer was born, raised, and still lives in Virginia.
So, where are the ghosts?
Could have done without the bad haunted house background music.
Well that was pretty cheesy but it made a point.
a distinguished soldier who turned down the cause of the union army , at the time when the war , started , and it seemed that the confederates , would sweep to Washington. Unfortunately , the tide fell against him and decided to surrender, and bring an end of the civil war , which tore the federal union, at that time.
President Trump would declare that the terms of surrender were a bad deal. He would threaten to abrogate the agreement if the South did not agree to sit down and renegotiate.
Frank Blangeard
Fuck off.
Is that because the Confederates still held the Airports?
Ok...can we just get this over wi-
*MARTHA! NOT, NOW!*
Good God! The makers of this video couldn't give General Grant the three stars of a Lt. General? Typical trashing of U.S. History.
Umhh... wait just a minute, here. I did not dress these men. They made their own uniforms. Grant is Tony Daniels. He was Grant in "April 1865 The Month That Saved America." Dressed just like this...
I just made the movie of the presentation that they give three times a year for the Federal Executive Institute...
+William Dean...If we can believe the history books Grant was well known for wearing the uniform of a private soldier.
