Angle and Bret combining for just one 5 star match according to Meltzer just reminds you how oversized his influence is. Especially when that one match is the Summerslam cage match with Owen, which wasn't even the best match... between Bret and Owen... in 1994.
But that's Meltzer's way. He consumes matches in a vacuum where none of the context around the matches matters. It's the only way he can manage to rate matches from promotions all over the world. At the end of the day, all he remembers is the moves. So obviously Angle's not going to get the credit he deserves. Every little gesture, and every flinch of every sell, was all part of the match. Dude probably didn't even understand the psychology of Angle vs Benoit at Mania 17, as obvious as it was, because it was established based on a promo made between the two on TV between No Way Out and Mania.

If you think about the 1-2-3 Kid vs Bret Hart match on Raw way back in 1994, the match wasn't a huge stunt show. It was just good wrestling and well built psychology and storytelling from 2 wrestlers who were VERY good at both technique and proper selling. Bret said more with an eyebrow raise and a cock of the head then some wrestlers say in a full promo. It's considered one of Raw's greatest matches ever, and should be in every wrestling class.

Unfortunately when Kurt first came into WWE Bret was still with WCW and by the time WCW went under Bret was retired due to medical issues. So it remains a forever lost dream match that we will never see.
However Kurt did get to wrestle Owen in a dark match that unfortunately was never recorded. But Kurt has said that it was one of his favorite matches and a memory he will always treasure.

@@KairiPrime As great as Kurt was, it is scary to think how much better he would have been had he worked with Brett early in his career because he would have had a much better understanding of the art of putting on a match to reflect a bit more of realism and story telling within the ring, which undoubtedly would have led to more drama and suspenseful moments in his matches.

Thats what modern day wrestlers lack, the art of selling. It was those subtle ways that makes wrestling so intense.

This is what set Shawn and Bret apart from everyone else. They made big guys look like the monsters they were portrayed to be with their selling. It wasn’t about the stunts, it was about the story in the ring and making it believable and nobody did it as well as those 2.

This is why Kurt angle is still probably underatted for what he achieved. He is spot here and Bret Hart was my favourite, but I have heard countless wrestlers talk about how fast Kurt Angle picked up the business side of professional wrestling. Kurt is one of the GOATs without a doubt, what he achieved and so quickly is nothing short of phenominal.

  • @JessicaChastainFan

It's not just the no selling. It's also the overselling that kills a match by default. This is why Bret Hart is vastly superior to Shawn, and Shawn is nowhere near my top 10 or top 30 of all time. You can't oversell and be considered great. You can't do flips and high risk showmanship that has been surpassed by literally every smaller wrestler since and be considered great in retrospect. But no one...NO ONE can replicate or duplicate what Bret did. He was an artist.

As a wrestling fan that's been watching since the 80s it makes me incredibly sad that Bret and Kurt never graced the ring together. That match would have been magic and I have no doubt it would have eclipsed my favorite match of all-time which is Hart and Hennig from King of the Ring 93.
