Kurt was ridiculously good and he figured pro wrestling out more or less instantly ... for him to give you this kind of praise means a lot. Bret is the GOAT.
Kurt has been on the record saying that when he first decided to get into professional wrestling, Bret was one of the wrestlers whose matches he studied most.
Rewatched a match of his recently and this track 100%. Apart from his ring psychology, that man commanded a mat like a fucking surgeon. The Perfectplex is a beautiful move.
Kurt Angle and Bret Hart never crossing paths is one of pro wrestling's biggest missed opportunities. Bret vs Kurt at Wrestlemania would have been one for the ages.
@@sandiletwala3001 Vince ruined that for us, to be fair. Being unwilling to do what he could to keep Bret, being unwilling to put his foot down with HBK & tell him "no, you're putting Bret over, that's it". All those things contributed to Bret being in WCW in the first place. We could've had Bret vs Austin at WM, Bret vs Taker at WM, and Bret vs Kurt all within the next 3 yrs that Bret continued to wrestle.
I'd rather see an MMA match Hart vs Brock Lesnar. Headlock, arm bar rest holds for 5min is boring. Body slams and back body drops were big in 1950s. Not anymore. Keep in mind that HBK is training rookies to do all his stunts and move combinations. HBK was special, but now almost everyone is his clone.
This footage shows how underrated Rey Mysterio is. He is still to this day, the best high flyer wrestler active (and probably of all time) because he knows how to blend high flying moves and wrestling psychology.
Angle and Bret combining for just one 5 star match according to Meltzer just reminds you how oversized his influence is. Especially when that one match is the Summerslam cage match with Owen, which wasn't even the best match... between Bret and Owen... in 1994. But that's Meltzer's way. He consumes matches in a vacuum where none of the context around the matches matters. It's the only way he can manage to rate matches from promotions all over the world. At the end of the day, all he remembers is the moves. So obviously Angle's not going to get the credit he deserves. Every little gesture, and every flinch of every sell, was all part of the match. Dude probably didn't even understand the psychology of Angle vs Benoit at Mania 17, as obvious as it was, because it was established based on a promo made between the two on TV between No Way Out and Mania.
Bret was also all about in ring safety and mentoring the talent that came after him. People really minimize the importance of that and of the role he played.
I really like how he said, “Bret Hart had the psychology”. That’s what I always loved about BH. He’s been my favourite since I was a kid and would sneak down Saturday afternoons to watch wrestling on a 4”x4” black and white tv that was part of a stereo.
The more time passes the more people will realize bret was right about everything. I’ve people call him a lot of things never once heard someone call him a liar.
Always great to hear Kurt, an Olympic gold medalist and as legit as it gets, show over and over again that he’s a student of professional wrestling, understanding of psychology at a high level, and pays respects to his counterparts. The guy could have been a legend without doing this but really treats pro wrestling with the utmost respect.

If you think about the 1-2-3 Kid vs Bret Hart match on Raw way back in 1994, the match wasn't a huge stunt show. It was just good wrestling and well built psychology and storytelling from 2 wrestlers who were VERY good at both technique and proper selling. Bret said more with an eyebrow raise and a cock of the head then some wrestlers say in a full promo. It's considered one of Raw's greatest matches ever, and should be in every wrestling class.
